1972 442 W30 Oldsmobile smoking the tires. Known as burn out at Inline Tube's annual car show. If you ask what flew in front of the car, it is a pop can from the curb.

1970 Highway safety w James Garner in 1970 Cutlass Supreme.
Those are small numbers for a 496.
It basically has a stock top end. There's at least 100 more hp with an aftermarket top end. Looks like he wanted to keep stock parts because it is a true W car. Great build big power!!!
Not sure why Steve Mcqueen gets the reputation as the king of speed. Garner was just as mych into cars, motorcycles, and racing. I completely agree with the narrator. He was definitely qualified.
Olds Omega, Pontiac Ventura, Buick Skylark, Chevrolet Nova. All divisions had a version of this car. Never heard anyone pronounce Omega the way he does by the way.
Rockford files!
1/4 mile in 18 seconds ... 😂😂😂 gimme a minute 😂😂😂😂😂 oh wait, 1/4 in 60 seconds is the 75' model 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Are you running 3” exhaust?

...ideally, you are looking far ahead and you've left yourself a good gap in which you can slow the car before swerving, as well as placing yourself in the correct lane so as to avoid the need to move into the path of traffic in an emergency manouevre.
Tom Selleck did this in an Eldorado convertible and never touched a cone.
Angel was in the trunk.
my brother had a 73 4door cutlass back in the early 80s. 350 4bbl. had plenty of giddyup. 95 mph up and down the nj turnpike without a peep. From McGuire AFB to Montvale Nj in an hour. back in the day that was pretty good for a 10 year old car
It was a 2.73 rear end! At least put a 3.23 or 3.55 and you have a normal car. Gas was "FREE" back then.
Perhaps performing a J Turn in his Trans Am would work better.
wow, that looks just like my '70 Cutlass. That I had crushed 35 years ago, because of rust. But it was a fun car.
These olds and the Buick stage 1 s should have had a smaller brother to put these engines in what if ?
I remember when Jim and I would get drunk and race VWs on the Santa Monica pier !! 😂😂😂💦
Young kids of today should see this video! They drive on the roads like shit.
I knew a kid that had one of these
When I was 16, the car I drove was a 1972 Buick Skylark. I wonder how I would feel if I could go back in time and drive it now. The shiny metal bumpers make me most nostalgic.
1970 ALWAYS looks a better place
That organ music trying so hard to be exciting. Love it
Note the 150 mph speedometer in the second generation dodge charger dash
When I get a different car(never buy new), I always take it out to a safe place to test it's limits. How hard can I brake, how fast can I turn. To see what it's capable of so I know how to keep it within its limits. I do it again with snow on the ground. After a good test. I know what I can and can't do in the car
Jim said it perfectly & it's 100% true.
Always liked him from his TV shows.
What ever you hit will change direction while you will not.
That was _way_ faster than I thought it would be on those crappy polyglas tires!
Forget the bullshit commiefornia timing lights that do nothing except people run them at the beginning.
Great find!!
Dig that groovy background music hahaa
Which is precisely why Jimbo chose the Firebird Formula 400 for his TV show...
Hello. My brother bought one in 1993, it’s never been driven. Just sitting in the garage wasting away. So sad
Bud is like…it’s an Omeeega. A Nova with a Slosmobile badge.
No, it's not a "good test", add at least 2-4 seconds when you are not anticipating the situation.
Reminds me of Saturday afternoon TV way back when.
The soundtrack

MoPar Speedometer from the late 60s to the early 70s, i know because I owned two 1970 Plymouth Roadrunners between 79 and 84, but i barely saw the speedometer because the huge smile on my face distracted my view!!! Damn it, i miss my Roadrunners! (One wrecked in a drag race, one stolen from my winter storage.😢)
Imagine if the stolen one turns up one day, stored in some collector’s garage somewhere 🤩
I had a '70 Cutlass Supreme like that when I was in high school. Only 60 MPH was straight up and only 120 MPH for the highest speed shown. Never saw one like that.
I don’t think a modern car would behave like that.
Jim said exactly what I taught my kids: know your car and what you can and cannot do with it. Driving skill is a dying art and really parallels one's freedom and courage as a citizen. Also, know the dimensions of your vehicle and learn how to put it precisely where you want it to go and you'll be ahead of most drivers today who can't find their lane.
Problem was...it's a gold Oldsmobile and not a gold Pontiac that Jim was use to driving. 😉
Super Cool!
This was the first car to out run my 70 Chevelle SS. In 1978 Sweet…..
His pronunciation of the model name is hilarious.
Um that 60 looked like 35. But still cool, thanx for posting. Just shows how bad 'Merican cars handled with 78 narrow bias ply tires.
50 YRS LATER AMERICA STILL DONT LEARN ITS THEM DAM SMARTPHONES EVERY WEEK PEOPLE GETTING KILLED ON ROADS
98% of people on the road today have no idea what their vehicle is capable of at any speed, it is very important to know what your vehicle is capable of and how it reacts at different speeds and road conditions, if you are put in a situation where you have to actually drive your vehicle instead of holding the steering wheel you can drastically change the outcome of an emergency you should know your vehicle it can save your life, you should know how to react closing your eyes and standing on the brake pedal isn't always a good idea
Olds Cutlass,Plymouth speedometer,Ford hubcaps.That was some trick.
The whitewalls became raised white letter tires too.
Makes sense. Garner had an AMC race team didn't he?
I'm glad he wasn't driving a corvair. It would have turned over when he made that aggressive turn. Ralph Nader unsafe at any speed 😮.
