I once broke a cheap rod like that, kept fishing it, and caught a nice three lber. I thought that casting with the broken rod was also good for my baitcasting practice.

Yes and no. When you grabbed the rod it bent way past what it can tolerate. Though at the same time you were more focused on landing your catch, and that rod broke way to easily for anything ive seen. I've done what you just did countless times and never broken a rod, but ill just chuck that up to luck.
