How Content is Like Light — And Why It Matters by Nicole France
Chances are good that everyone here has talked about “content as code”…and I get it. But the problem is that’s only half the story. Content has an important duality, one that makes it incredibly powerful as well as challenging to work with effectively. Just as light is both a particle and a wave, content is both “code” and…meaning.
If you concentrate only on one or the other, you miss the important stuff. Like the challenges of moving from ideas to structured content. Or the differences between working with content and creating content. And the importance of an environment in which everyone who has a hand in content can operate independently while still working in coordination.

SaaS companies often deliver different customer experiences based on user attributes. Premium customers might get access to paid features, new customers might see product walk-throughs, and international customers might see prices in their local currency. We typically think of this kind of “feature management” in the context of UI elements, user flows, or back-end processes. However, technical ...

    1 hour of going back and forth between the documentation and your implementation. Serious waste of time, you need to have a script for this kind of thing.

    I like version 5 more than 4. It is less magical and I like that you are only declaring reactive variables when you really need to. It is a nice API they designed: cleaner and more explicit.

    Thanks for the stream. I followed along with the code, but for some reason it doesn't seem to work in Firefox (when I go offline I just get the "you're offline" error page). It does work on Chromium browsers though (Vivaldi). Regarding the positioning of the button at the bottom of the screen: Absolute positioning is not ideal because on small screens (or if the joke is very long) there is a chance that the button will cover the joke. The modern way to do it would be to use flexbox or grid. 1. On body: min-height: 100vh; box-sizing: border-box; display: flex; flex-direction: column; 2. Then on the div that contains the button (must be a _direct child_ of the flexbox container (body)): margin-top: auto; (And of course remove the position absolute, transform etc.)

      I'll look into Firefox. Maybe something's wonky there. As for the CSS, Sue, one of the folks watching, sent me a codepen, and I've integrated her fix - I forget the actual CSS but it's in my CodeBr repo now.

    Alternatively you can render to the declarative shadow DOM. Also, when JavaScript is available, you can hook shadow DOM form elements into the light DOM form via ElementInternals. So, you’re not forced to circumvent these shadow DOM issues by avoiding the shadow DOM per se. There’s definitely more work though, but that’s a price _some_ might be willing to pay for the encapsulation (e.g. if you’re building a library or need to have this component used on third party or vendor sites).

    You can't do evangelism without two way conversations and bring back the input from the community to the company. That’s been the case for the 30 years I have been doing this. All of these roles are the same thing. Just slap on the title you like...that you think is less divisive to your community....that’s why I like evangelism.

    Hi Ray, a bit more history for you. In 1975 and 1976, Will Crowther, a spelunker and programmer at Raytheon BBN in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in his spare time wrote the first computer text adventure game, Adventure was launched as ADVENT because a filename could only be six characters long in its operating system. The game was renamed Colossal Cave, as it was based on part of the Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. Zork was inspired by Adventure and TSR's Dungeons and Dragons game of Gygax and Arneson. Zork started out as the original name, but as time went on, it became "Dungeon". However TSR threatened Infocom that Dungeon sounded too much like Dungeons & Dragons, so the name was changed back to Zork. You probably also remember the public domain game Eamon that ran on the Apple ][ by Donald Brown, circa 1980, which quite a few people built additional games based on that engine. I still have the "Treasures of Infocom" box on my library shelf, which is a compendium of 20 Infocom games; Zork (I, II, III), Zork Zero, Infidel, The Lurking Horror, Suspect,, Ballyhoo, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Suspended, Starcross, Deadline, Witness, Moon Mist, Planetfall, Stationfall, Enchanter, Sorcerer, and Spell Braker. Probabably doens't even work anymore, I should try it again LOL. AD&D 1E FOR THE WIN!

    34 minutes in, Ray added the "playerChose" function which takes the event "e". My personal preference is to destructure that because I only need target (i.e. playerChose({target}) {.. ), but I was curious what the larger community thought. What're y'alls preference?

    • @RaymondCamden
      @RaymondCamden 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Interesting - I've seen destructing before, but I've not seen it used like that in a function argument list. TBH, I really dig it.
