I went to his house in Matsue, Hern that is. The one he lived in before he moved to Tokyo, it's almost right under Matsue castle. It struck me as a very esteemed location to be so close to the castle. I'm currently reading a collection on his lesson known stories. It seems amazing to me that he discovered Japan later in life (I think he was about 40 when he moved there?) but still was curious and thirsty for new experiences. A lot of people would probably set in their ways and not as open as he was.
