Math behind the stupidity of FRAMEWORK 16
มุมมอง 15Kปีที่แล้ว
The Framework 16 DIY version costs $1400 and the prebuilt one costs $1700. There are other laptops in the same price range that have better specs. The Framework 16's main selling point is that it is modular and you can upgrade the parts, but this is not a good enough reason to spend $2100 on it. The display, battery, and keyboard will all degrade over time, so the cost of upgrading the GPU will...

Just wondering if you ever hold the device. You dont even know it comes with a casing that will protect the soft screen. Samsung just recently launch the tri-fold with similar fold.
Sorry, I’ve missed that information. Thanks for sharing
Um, no. Samsung is working on it, but it has not been launched yet. Maybe next year.
Thanks for adding that
you can use it if you never leave your home and has a dust-free place to keep it if you put it in your bag, pocket - it will destroy the screen sooner or later the soft screen outside without protection is making it an expensive toy
I agree
Nice job. Thanks for video
Thanks for watching
The M4 doesn't support Thunderbolt 5, only the M4 Pro does. The basic iMac model only supports one display.
Appreciate you watching the video, but genocidal zionist supporters are not welcome in my channel. Hope you find humanity at your heart, one day. Thank You Wish you knowledge and good luck

I have both the 2020 intel iMac 128 GB and the M1 iMac with 16 GB. Replacing both with a MacBook Pro 16 with 128 GB of memory. Having both iMacs together, I never felt the 24 inch iMac was too small or the 27 inch iMac was huge.
Damn. Good for you
Great insight. Macbook finally bit the dust, have to decide whether I get the new M4 Pro or perhaps the Asus G16 / Legion 7i. Any other suggestions?
I’m gonna have to dive a bit deeper into that. Sorry I couldn’t be helpful to your query.
This video was surprisingly really good. You're quick yet still descriptive with the content and I'd actually rather watch this than simply searching on google. Keep going ❤️
Thanks man. You’re words really inspires me to keep going
M4 Mini starts at 599. It comes with weak gpu, ram not upgradeable, and ssd not upgradeable. M4 Mini does not support external GPU boxes over Thunderbolt. What a shame.
Can’t really expect all that from Apple at this price, now can we?
@@pcy0825 The M4 Mac Mini with 32gb of ram, and the price rises to 1000 usd. For that money, a Windows PC will offer far more performance, upgradability, and a much bigger and better software library. Windows has a 90 percent market share, and that is no surprise.
Two options, buy last year's model & or use external storage which is much better priced. If I have to save money, those are two areas I look at. Great item.
You’re a financially smart consumer
what monitor to pair with the mini m4? the studio feels old by now
I do not have a good answer at the moment, but I promise I will make a video about this. I’ll pitch you on the next video Thanks
Great video, pretty nice presentation, keep it on man 😁💪💪
Thanks man Really appreciate it
Keep rocking 🙌
Thanks man
This will be my first Mac mini. I think I'll just buy the base model and in 2-3 years buy a reasonably specked Mac Studio. Are you buying and if so which specs?
I do not think I’ll be buying this one, since I already have a M2 MacBook Air which I pair up with a display plus I occasionally use my iPad as a display option as well. But I think you should be good buying this one. Thanks for watching btw.
you're going entirely off of specs. you're ignoring keyboard, trackpad. and speakers. "The display, battery, and keyboard will all degrade over time" is a stupid point. do you know what you're making a video about? you are making a video about a framework laptop. when it turns to shit, you replace it. when the hings turns to shit, you buy a new one. when the display breaks, you buy a new one, not a new laptop. you saying that a ten year old laptop wont be worth that price is so stupid. a framework IS theseus's ship.
i see that you've already realized your mistake, for me a framework makes perfect sense since i love tinkering with stuff, everything is swappable and i dont have to worry about breaking my screen and having to replace it outside of warranty. The decision to have magnetic bezels is a blessing since you dont have to worry about breaking small plastic clips, swapping motherboard is a breeze, the parts are readily available, spilling coffee in your laptop is no longer a death sentance to having to buy another $1500 laptop, instead i just spend another 500 on a new mobo. then my total cost would be $2600 instead of 3k. And one of the points of buying in to early tech is supporting the company so they can make even more affordable products, a (very bad) example of this is tesla, releasing high end expensive cars with a promise to use that money to fund more affordable cars down the road. Why its a bad example is cause they've been releasing the same cars for 8 years now with minor improvements and almost 0 effort towards the "affordability" part and very much effort on the highest end models (ie plaid, 1000hp+ car, cyber truck etc.)
Are your calculations based on bringing your own memory, SSD, and OS? They each have at least a $100 markup on those but I would expect that. Not as bad as Dell, HP, and especially Apple. Are you using Linux or Windows? Find me one laptop on the market on which Linux is pre-installed or fully supported besides Tuxedo, System76, SlimBook, NovaCustom -- and those are all based on Clevo which still has mostly USB-A ports. What other laptop besides Framework can you expect Linux to be fully supported and fully customize with modern USB-C ports, has FULLY OPEN standards, specs, and engineering plans, and is decent for gaming, programming, and productivity, and strives to be sustainable and environmentally friendly? Hmmm?
eminem wants to know your location. Great video by the way!
Thanks mate😅 Tell Eminem to meet me at Dhaka😅
I do understand your reason. But if you a people who are Eco-friendly and living in the poverty and trying to survive in higher society. No choice to selection one with modular GPU. I mean as second hand Framework Laptop 16. it hurt my soul throwing away all my laptops.
L take
So, the price is for sure valid concern. I look at it differently: If I invest in some good NB, it will take me about a week or 2 till i install and configure everything to what I need. Considering the led-less madness of chips manufacturers in last 15 years, one can expect 5-6 reliable years from such notebook. If I have to invest let's say 1 week of my work time every 5 years I have to factor in the $ loss I would earn for that week. That brings the price of mainstream NBs quite high over FW. There are more arguments for FW, for me this is the main one. I despise the single-use mindset of our world.
Its 500$ for an entry level framework laptop. Im waiting for the usb c 240 watt brick to be released. But i'm planning to purchase the framework 16 once it does.
Tried watching multiple videos, this one was the most helpful!
You liiterally say "he display, battery, and keyboard will all degrade over time," and than " The repairability of the Framework 16 is a plus" Try to repair a Macbook air or Pro. And check the prices on a RAM upgrade. Yes, the FW is more expanse than an HP/DELL etc.. but these machines are sold in large volumes. With your way of thinking we would never have electric cars, rockets that can land on their own or medicine. It is ok if you do no want to buy it, or do not believe or understand the mission of Framework.
THat's a neat house. I bought the framework 16 and... ehehhhhhhehhhhh yeah it's too expensive compared to the Legions tbh haha. I don't trust ASUS worth shit but a Lenovo could have saved me money and even maybe gotten more performance. One criticism though the keyboard should be fine for 5-10 years and a is about $50 CAD so that's no issue... display is good out of the box! Alsor replaceable. Theoretically the frame is gonna go on for as long as Framework is a company. Will it save money? I mean... maybe. A new GPU in 5-8 years the CPU etc should be perfectly powerful for everything then. That'll be a saving compared to a new laptop.
I think it was said enough that comparing low-cost big-brand models with soldered parts with Framework is an actual stupidity here. Producers like Lenovo, Dell... are soldering RAM and other parts today to save costs. But then you have to throw the whole thing away - there's no chance at all of future upgrade (unless you pay almost the price of a new laptop for the repair). Beside repairability there's also software package - for newcomers it might be surprising that FW asks you to download special bundle of drivers, but apparently that makes things working smoothly after all. And don't get me started on Linux support - which is a big selling point for all the fans out there. You mentioned Asus A16 as an alternative for AMD Advantage? It works with max 32GB RAM, while I need 64GB. It works with older RAM modules (4800 MHz). And it can easily climb to $2000+ zone... It's even heavier (and FW16 weights a lot), not to talk about low-res camera and other "perks" - so not sure why would I prefer that. For slightly higher refresh rate of their screen? Certainly not a plus for me. And call me quirky, I love added "bonuses" - not only ability to play with the ports, but being able to add numpad for some periods (that are more number-heavy), or even LED matrices. Overall, you can't compare FW16 to anything - because there simply isn't anything like that.
Its 2100 but then you can rather cheaply upgrade the main board and GPU in the future and keep using the old mainboard and GPU for other stuff. Normally you throw away everything and buy a new one. You end up spending more and you only have one computer. You could keep the old laptop but its not as elegant or efficient.
The complete control that I have over the Framework Laptops and the ability to repair absolutely anything is worth the cost! Liberty sadly costs money... I take a LONG time to replace my computing equipment, so the longer the better! In most cases the shell of my laptop will still look new but if I can change the internals, I am all for it! You are actually not looking at the long-term cost.
Sorry to say but you clearly don't understand, the point of having this in 10 years is that you CAN swap out parts that have degraded. If we wanted a performance bargain, yes, buying this would be stupid. The point of Framework is its repairability, upgradability, and supporting right to repair ideals. I'd like to see a comparison of buying a new $1200 laptop every two or three years vs having and upgrading this for the same period.
$1400 is way too much. it doesn't come with : charger, RAM, SSD, dedicated graphics. you can literally get an entire 16" laptop for that price with same or better specs as the fully built out Framework 16.
you are right, people just hating cuz they are LTT fanboys
So it's not for you. Also, who tf destroys their keyboard? I have a 10 year old keyboard and it still looks brand new. My laptop is from 2018 and it still looks brand new. If you abuse your electronics, they probably won't last ten years. Those of us look after our possessions, however, we want to toss a new processor in it every so often.
Something is most definitely suffering from stupidity, but its not the Framework laptop.
Thanks for clearing this all up! I miss the ryzen 1600 - 3600 days lol
appreciate your opinion and we all got misses, one of the main reasons I'm going to get this is because I can take the SSD and OS straight from my PC to the framework and with its extremely unique customizability, order the framework DIY version without the SSD and OS included if I choose so, the framework also shows that it Is basically my dream all-in-one machine I've always wanted. Gaming laptops are great, until you realise they die in 0.3 seconds because of that beefy GPU, but this laptop allows me to hotswap between GPU and integrated graphics in 5 minutes, giving me that portable school workbook alongside an extremely powerful gaming computer as well. the price is worth it with all that considered alongside all the other reasons the other commentators have explained (emerging market to they need to make profit, new company not a monopoly, etc...). TLDR; I understand this video wasn't supposed to blow up as much as it did but please take this constructive criticism and use it in your other videos in the future! don't let the comments keep you from posting.
ashush
I thoroughly disagree... If you look at it as a professional laptop instead of wanting a gaming laptop it makes a ton of sense My previous laptop was a lenovo which at the time cost around €3500 and it has lasted me 11 years before i had to admit it was getting too slow. Mind you, it still isn't broken... I have swapped out a battery and charger and the two drives which made it last 5 years longer than it otherwise would have Except for a noisy fan all other parts are still in excellent condition. So the argument that the screen or keyboard would be crap is just false I now bought the framework 16 (and also own a framework 13) which cost me the same amount of money as my lenovo once did but 11 years down the line i might be able to swap the motherboard and gpu for a lot less than buying yet another laptop even though none of the hardware is actually broken...
Sweet mother of Jesus, if you don't know what you're talking about shut the f up
don't buy it if it's too expensive for your income and shut up
Did you test the electrical outlet before shooting that video? Jokes aside, awesome hair mate.
i kinda agree. some valid points.
Once a wise man said: "I am not rich enough to buy cheap stuff."
It's literally in its own market. For now. Can do good math if the variables arent calculated
Dumbest take of 2023
I actually did the math. A gaming laptop that decent costs $1500 and a framework laptop with similar specs costs $2100. Say you want to upgrade your laptop every 5 years, you would have to buy an entire new $1500 laptop or spend around $600 to upgrade the framework laptop (This estimate also includes new battery and keyboard that you CAN replace). This being said you would start to save money at around 11 years or a little over two replacement cycles. So if you replace your laptop every 3 years then you would start to save after a little over 6 years. So therefore as long as you don't get bored of your laptop and decide to not upgrade your framework one and you need a laptop with those specs you will save money. I LOVE MATH and you clearly didn't do it yourself. (:[==== bye
also remember that you can sell the old motherboards or repurpose them
You didn't get the point of the product.
Your argument makes absolutly no sense. Battery starts dying? Replace it. Keyboard getting crummy? Replace it. Newer better screens come out? Replace it. Do you expect to be buying a new laptop again in 10 years? If so then you save money buying the Framework laptop. The piece of mind knowing that you can always replace whatever breaks on the F16 is worth a lot of money in itself. If you spend 1400 on a Dell and the charging port breaks, you'll have to spend potentially another 1400 bucks since that's not a warranty repair, and you'll be dumping money into a 3 year old laptop that is already getting worn down. Finally. Don't Mac Books cost like 4K?
Oof. This is a bit of a headass take. I'm three years into a Lenovo Legion 5. Would I love to upgrade the GPU? Absolutely. Is my keyboard dicked from typing on it all day? (I'm literally a writer lol) Nope. It's still literally like the day I bought it. Not a single sign of wear on the keys. If and when I upgrade my laptop, assuming I don't go for a desktop, I hope Framework ships to my country. I'd happily spend the extra $$$ on a Framework 16 if it means I can upgrade the GPU, and replace the display, battery, and keyboard when they eventually do tire out. I'm also all about minimal consumption, so replacing only the stuff that's going bad and keeping my tech as long as I can is a huge benefit to me. If it's not the product for you, cool. You do you. But there are a lot of people that are willing to pay a little extra to have something repairable that should stay out of a landfill a little longer.
Don't look at MacBook prices
As a feedback I would suggest you to look at the concept of use cases. So you can provide a broader pov.
