Homestead Imaginations
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 28 พ.ค. 2024
Hello and welcome!
My name is Josh and we bought our dream house at the end of 2021 in Fort Edward, NY. I decided to try gardening with some convincing of my wife and I found out I thoroughly enjoy it and have become obsessed!
I have now decided to start going down the path of self sufficient living and turning our property into a homestead.
Never gardened or had livestock before so this will document my journey and meet like minded people.
Adding what I can when I can. Trying to expand as much as possible.
Come along with your Imagination and lets be a better version of ourselves each day. :)

@@HomesteadImaginationsMy pleasure. Funny thing though. I could have sworn I left another comment on this video, too

@@HomesteadImaginations ok. There must be a forbidden word that I used which blocked my comment. Just left another and it's not here either. Congratulations anyways💪😎
Beautiful dogs! Love their mix. I grew up with an Australian shepherd, among many other dogs. And she was hands down the smartest of them all. Thanks for sharing them ❤

Great tips! So important to learn and keep an open mind year by year to acquire more skills for a successful growing season. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much! Our plants can't be the only thing growing, we need to find personal growth as well. <3
Smiley day to you
Boys were excited! We went to a Balloon event and due to the wind they didn't take off and many weren't going to inflate and then we came home to three balloons taking off. One was already gone, the second was passing over our road as we came home and just made it for the third ones take off.

Banana squash
@@FUBAR1986 Thank you for suggestion! Someone had mentioned they think its Cucuzza Squash and the description and images match more of the Cucuzza. The banana is more of an orange, fatter and thicker from the pictures. Look up Cucuzza squash it seems to match really well.
Cucuzza Squash- Delicious, surprisingly long gourd from Sicily that is harvested 12” long or shorter and eaten like zucchini and used in delicious stews with tomatoes and potatoes. Vines grow up to 25’ (eat the leaves and tips!) and fruits can grow to 3’ or longer. Species originates in Africa. Cucuzza is an elongated Sicilian bottle gourd that predates Zucchini in Italy. Bottle gourds are an African species that has been eaten in southern Italy since at least the first century, and Zucchini is an American species that is said to have arrived in southern Italy shortly after the beginning of European occupation of the so-called Americas in 1492. Zucchini is a plural, diminutive version of Zucca, which was first used to describe this here Cucuzza, a southern Italian interpretation of Cucurbita, the Roman Latin word for bottle gourds. (Courgette has a similar word lineage). This is a complete plant in that you can eat the young shoots, leaves, and tender fruits. Our Sicilian friend and Cucuzza advisor calls it both a delicacy and a poor people’s food, and adds that it makes a wonderful jam!
Questo tipo di zucca si taglia e cresce di nuovo! Dovresti tagliare la metà,lei continua a crescere.
Finally got around to watching part 2. Kinda funny, I do the same with videos at work. I set up a playlist in the morning, put in an earbud and get to work while listening, then pause and rewind, or make a comment, when I can
Thank you! Yeah I find it the best to learn some stuff while I work. I would be screwed if I couldn't listen to things, to find the time to listen to all the things I want to would be impossible.
@@HomesteadImaginations same here. Between yt gurus and fellow homesteaders, I wouldn't be able to do anything else. Plus, it's kinda like getting paid to learn some new trades without having to quit your day job😉
@@WindwalkerHomestead Us homesteaders have to be efficient with our time haha.

You're getting a hell of an operation started there bud!!
Thank you! It has been a very busy summer. Next year will lay down a big part of the foundation. A lot of growth physically took place but also in my knowledge. Thank you so much for all the support!
Hostas need almost full shade (no direct sun) as far as I know… ?
@@krsncrs821 Good to know, may need to add shade then. They will get sun in the late afternoon to evening. the sun rises behind the house so most of the day they will be good.
I looked it up, they are shade-tolerant and can tolerate part shade.
I know a good place to learn problem solving skills!
I bet you do! haha

That is some pretty tight soil!
@@brianpinkey676 it sure is! But the compost should make a drastic improvement for next year. May take a couple years to get it where it needs to would like it but it will get there.
I remember my first batch of pet dirt. It was like having a newborn with all the attention I gave it. Your pile isn't a "failure". It probably won't hot cook but it will do its thing eventually. Next pile or adding to that one I would go with wetting each layer and definitely more browns. I soak mine pretty good. More than what I see recommendedand. Take that advice at your own risk... Grass can get a bit sloppy/stinky at times. I just turn it and add some browns if its too wet. No big deal. It all works out in the end. Dont forget adding kitchen scraps and whatnot. Chicken manure and bedding when you get your coop going. And you already have all the browns and greens you need growing right behind you. Cut half and fluff it with a rake so it doesn't clump. Let it bake in the sun for awhile. All nice and crispy dead. Cut the other half when you're ready to do a batch. Let it grow and repeat. Easy peasy. Keep living the dream dude. No worries. You're doing good.
@@John-pk8lr Thank you for the advice! I plan on expanding once i get more pallets. Going to create a much bigger bin next to those two as the storage/dumping area and then two more bins so i have plenty of compost area so even if it doesnt do hot compost i have enough space to have as much as i need processing. Love the idea of cutting down the weeds and growth behind it and let it die and dry out to make it be a natural carbon for me. I will def try that next year.
Definitely important reasons to become a homesteader. And (of course) you don't have to be off grid to become a homesteader, nor do you need to completely disconnect from society to be off grid. Off grid simply means, by definition, off the utility grid. I enjoyed the video and subbed. I look forward to future videos
I appreciate it Windwalker! Nice to meet you, and subscribed back. Love meeting like minded people. Have a good day!
@@HomesteadImaginations You as well and I hope you enjoy your homesteading journey 💪😎
@@WindwalkerHomestead as you know it has it's ups and downs. But I am loving it thus far. I really enjoy problem solving, especially when I figure it out and solve it haha. Watching your latest about off grid batteries. Solar I think is something I will want to tackle in a few years from now. Want to save up as much as I can for it and not have to get a loan.
@@HomesteadImaginations yes. Even with how tough it can be and all the setbacks, at the end of the day, I could be sweating, dirty and bleeding, but I still smile when I sit down on the evening. Our solar is an ongoing project. We started with 200 watts and 2 batteries and slowly built up. All used panels from a reputable company. I still want at least 4 more panels and an IFLA battery, but we have enough to power everything we need right now, including a window air conditioner
They are nice, till they land in your yard lol
@@brianpinkey676 we havent had one yet. We have had one land in every neighbors yard but not ours. It may never happen for us its not as open as everyone else. But one did land in our one neighbors small yard but it was a desperate landing haha.
