fig wasp lifecycle
The female fig wasp is attracted to the scent that figs emit. She will burrow herself inside the fig, losing her wings in the process, as she can hardly fit into the opening at the bottom of the fig. Inside the fig, at this stage are flowers, ovules ready to be pollinated. The wasp provides this service, and also lays her eggs here, knowing they will be safe and well-fed. This is her last act in life, as she is too large to exit the fig from whence she came. She will die inside, as her children grow. The male children are flightless and will die soon, but in the meantime can dig a path for their sisters to escape. Now covered in pollen, they continue the symbiotic cycle.

      uuhh as far as decorations go, it could really be any solid object that is easy for you to clean and doesn’t have any paint (etc.) that might come off in the water. marimos are cool to own because they are pretty simple to take care of (you can’t overwater them!), and can live for decades.

    I just got my 3 Marimos (0.5 cm) a few days ago and I found from other sources that we can actually refrigerate them. Is it true? And if so, how often should I?

    • @anni_
      @anni_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, they can be refrigerated! marimos thrive in colder water. i would do it for a day or two at most, maybe once a month? even if you live in a warmer area, marimos will be fine unless their water temp consistently reaches over 80 degrees fahrenheit.

    • @hedras924
      @hedras924 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What is the purpose of washing the plant? Are the creatures inside the plant harmful to fish? Are you supposed to wash plants and put them back in the tank?

    • @elodie5528
      @elodie5528 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      well like i guess it is to just get out the dirt and old water out of the plant

    • @anni_
      @anni_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you have them in a plain container like mine, you probably don’t need to clean them as frequently as you would if they were in a fish tank. marimos can be bogged down with dirt/hostile algae in that kind of environment. even in my container they grow a sort of sludge film after not being rinsed for a while. squeezing the marimo during the washing process also helps to return them to a spherical shape when they get deformed.

    • @anni_

    Do Moss ball have creatures inside of them ? I’m freaking out

    • @anni_
      @anni_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      i wouldn’t expect all moss balls to have creatures on them. i didn’t even know they were there until i checked the water residue. it’s kind of gross, but the little creatures just coexisted with the marimos and didn’t actually hurt them it seems. i haven’t found any more of them since!

    • @anni_
      @anni_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      as i’m rereading, i should add that parasites are more of a concern if you keep your marimos in a tank with other plants and/or fish. i would look up “quarantining moss balls” for more info.
