My Budget Kit for TTRPGs [like D&D / ShadowDark]

Want to play a TTRPG but don't want to spend a bunch of money? It takes very little to actually get started in the hobby. Even games like D&D typically have a Free Version of the rules. word you were probably looking for, some call it a diegetic progression ≈ narrative/story-driven character progression. Comes from Greek diēgēsis, ‘narrative’. "You survived the meltworms so you get Save +4 vs acid," as Goblin Punch blog put it. It doesn't just marry mechanical stuff with fiction, it draws from a story that emerges in a way that makes sense at your table. This way you don't have to buy a an official Book of Feats and choose a specific "Favourite Enemy" on the session-zero and optimise character build, so that your character would be allowed to roll a modified attribute + skill check to see if they have an advantage in negotiations against Tired Underpaid Copywriter if both reached 3rd level under fool moon. Daniel at Bandit's Keep channel had number of vids called like Emergent Character Arcs and these go hand-in-hand with diegetic progression. If your emergent character arc is to put away the sword it makes sense for a character to learn to read a spellbook at some point. This is why I love rules-light systems that are hard to break by homebrew. My players can attempt anything that will make sense in our stories. I have no idea how it will feel in d100 systems or sim-lite games, but slowly growing homebrew roll-under skills in Cairn worked perfect for us. Skill progress in level-less systems often feels diegetic when tied to something interesting, be that practice, success, failure or specific experience, that character lived to tell about (like in David Black's Black Hack that actually has levels but uses this great mechanic built around certain playstyle and type of progression).

  • @DMTalesTTRPG
    @DMTalesTTRPG วันที่ผ่านมา

    Well…you DO get to still decide that. But you’re limited to a boon or a bane. But I hear you, mostly it’s the character skill that’s in play.

      Yeah, just meaning it's something you'd want to use sparingly.

    "I can do anything in 5th edition" Well, no. They scrapped a LOT of things in 5th edition. WAY too many things. Like Psionics, for one. Ever seen a Psion in 5e? No? Well that's weird because they existed in literally EVERY other edition. Item creation in 5e is bland and boring as all hell. And how do you make undead? Isn't there like only 2 spells for anyone who wants to be a necromancer? 3? Much wider array of weapons and character creation options. Death saves were actually threatening. Prestige classes. The list of things you can't do in 5e is massive compared to the list of things you can do.

    You were right about emergent play. In old school style games it was a combination of loot and player creativity that made characters unique. The sheet didn’t tell you who the character was, the player did that. The personality and mannerisms and favorite moves made the character unique…not the build.

    • @ElderGoblinGames
      @ElderGoblinGames วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's the gist I was remembering from a Bandit's Keep video. But I've heard it used a lot of different ways, so I wasn't quite sure. Thanks for clarifying!

    • @DMTalesTTRPG
      @DMTalesTTRPG วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ElderGoblinGames the “plot” is also emergent. There’s no grand story pre-planned. It happens as the players make decisions and the world responds.

    There’s a bit of misunderstanding about charisma as a stat and its use. You roll dice when there’s a chance for meaningful failure. So you have the 2d6 reaction table to roll at that point (which is an OLD function) and add charisma modifier to the roll. So it matters even when you aren’ rolling dice every two seconds.

    • @ElderGoblinGames
      @ElderGoblinGames วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's a good point. I've tried to adopt the only roll when there's a meaningful chance of failure to all rolls. But I also forget about the reaction table a lot because it wasn't emphasized in the games I started with (PF & D&D) but that's important to remember. Thanks.

    I have to say: this is not really an innovation. This concept is old as heck. Dragonbane itself is already very old (1982) And when you say it's fair, well there would be others, that will tell you:"it feels counter intuitive" because it lacks information on how difficult a task is, grounded on facts beyond the charakter ("how slippery is the wall?", "how sturdy is the door?"). This can work, but often these systems use modifiers on the roll that represent factors outside the charakter. I don't think that this makes your problem with setting a DC really go away.

    • @ElderGoblinGames
      @ElderGoblinGames วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's true, roll under has been around for a bit (and Dragonbane). There will always be differing opinions for even the most minor rules and details. It doesn't make my opinion on the matter invalid. These days I'm not as interested in the difference of the smaller floating modifiers. I only have so much time in a week with my players at the table and I prefer to spend it keeping the story moving instead of referencing exact percentages in whatever fantasy game I'm playing. But you're right, to each their own.

    Another cool vid. great conversation about how gaming has positive effect on our lives. I started back in 81, paused from 92 until 2020. Back in the nineties got my now wife interested in it. Today i have my own home brew game that i wrote, mainly to avoid 5e lol and we are having fun again. The social aspect is huge for me because im a loner, only child, geek, etc. Combined with my other life of teaching karate, ttrpgs are the extent of my social environment. ttrpgs, [dnd] has, since day one in 1981, given me a social and creative outlet, [i like to doodle] along with my karate training, has basically saved me from a life of depression and loneliness. Im extremely honoured that you are sharing your current survival story through your love of the game. Its a testament to how this hobby can do more than just entertain us once a week, it can help us change ouor life, and be able to deal with life's extreme challenges at times. 🥳🫂👍🏿 Yeah - my players were initially very confused why I didn’t care what their passive perceptions were and wanted to know what they were doing - “Tell me what you want to do” has become the refrain to the point even the players say it now 😄

    I don't know what to say. That's horrible 😢 glad you keep up the good work and that you and your family and pets are now in safety.

    Mausritter has SUCH a good faction system and it's really influenced how i run things in my sandboxes

    Folded index cards can be good. Just cut to size and scribble a beastie. 😊

      The index card is one of your greatest tools in the kit.

    Tokens to use for enemies/monsters: blueberries, skirtles, or nuts etc. Every time one gets killed the players get to eat it. Not necessarily a long-term solution, but great dual use. Plus quite satisfying as well.

      @@ElderGoblinGames when GMing for kids it works even better. You can even "trick" them into eating veggies if they normally wouldn't. "Garden peas, bleh" "A hundred kobold minions? I'm going to kill and eat them all, muahahaha!"
