Fish On with Coach Steve
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 4 ส.ค. 2021
I grew up fishing all over Kansas chasing largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish! When I was in high school I discovered fly fishing and all the trout rivers in Missouri and Arkansas! After graduating from KU in 1997, I moved to Fort Collins, Colorado to be a park ranger and fish for trout every single day! I own a drift boat with a friend and chase trout all over Colorado and Wyoming. The last several years I have taken the family on extended vacations in Florida chasing Red fish, Pompano, and the latest obsession: Big sharks on conventional tackle kayaking out the bait! Oh, I’m also a tennis coach here in Loveland, Colorado and run overnight adidas tennis camps at Colorado State University! Like, share, and follow along for tons of fun, educational, and informative content! Thanks for looking!

Nice catch!!!
@@tokyoboi07 thank you!! Keep fishing!!
Boy you lucked out with no wind, it's one of the windiest place in the state. Browns were so pretty.
@@kentfonda8245 I was thinking that also! It made for great surface fishing this way but I always say wind is your friend with a nymph and balanced leach rig….
What beautiful animals, one of my favorites
@@Paint75 agreed thank you!
Lovely catch! I really miss the Rockies and catching cutthroat trout. Nothing quite like it so far as fresh-water fishing goes, especially alpine lakes. Being above the tree line, no one else around, it's heavenly. Seeing your video, makes me miss being in the mountains even more.
@@eclecticx thank you for that! Couldn’t agree more! Where you at now? Long draw is definitely up there….road doesn’t even open until July 1st each year!
@@FishOnwithCoachSteve Costa del Sol (South of Spain), so a wee bit away. LOL Might be back in the US in October. Thinking about including the Rockies in that trip. Lived there for several years, just outside Estes, in Grand Junction, and outside of Divide (atop a mountain with nearest neighbor about ten miles away - wonderful that!).
@@eclecticx wow! Sounds like an adventure filled life …God bless and safe travels if you make it out this way….I will be out there with you if you wet a line!
@@FishOnwithCoachSteve More like serendipitous rather than adventurous. Spend at least half my time here in Spain. Greater quality of life than in the US, but that's not to say there aren't great things about the States. Should I reach the Rockies (and I should - have some family in Fort Collins), I'll definitely be fishing. :D
@@eclecticxvery well spoken, hope you make it out this way!

What time are you going out there cause with the weather the way it is just seems like it’ll be too hot by the end of the day
@@arbusco yep this was a few weeks ago and mid morning….I agree, August can be tough so I wouldn’t even try unless it was very early or sunset right now
Great info
@@JonnieBlues appreciate that, thank you! It really is a key for catching these trout….I didn’t mention this in the video, but this type of casting like that with tons of line out below the bobber usually requires that you’re on a boat…..it’s about impossible from shore and land unless absolutely nothing is behind you
I believe that is a bear river cutthroat, which is one of three cutthroat strains that have been stocked there. The bear river and yellowstone can be tough to distinguish between, but I lean toward bear on that one. Great fish!
@@skicefishing thank you so much for this!! That’s super cool and I had no idea …we have also caught a 24 inch Brookie out of here trolling ….
Aye!! I've lived here my whole life! Used to fish it "illegally" when we were kids. I love that it was made public. Doesn't quite cover the loss of lone tree. TPC can eat it hahaha
@@user-dg9ms5by9h I hear that! Thanks for chiming in and keep fishing!!
Why are you fly fishing with a soft plastic and jig head? 😢
@@singlemom3260 oh I mention that in the full length episode on my page (ep 19)….it was just to mix it up, have fun, and show that you can use conventional lures on a fly rod! It’s fun!

@@Brandon-cn7se thank you! Yes, this one put a bend in the 9 foot 8 weight! This was caught on an olive balanced leach
@FishOnwithCoachSteve excellent! That's what I use.... for Steelhead.
@@Brandon-cn7se sick!! It’s crazy how effective those things are…..thanks for the comment brother!
I used to catch some nice ones on the other side of the fence but now they have the signs up and people look at you like you’re crazy
@@devond3691 I hear ya! They don’t seem to enforce it but guess you’re not supposed to
I been stocking that pond with brown trout for years
@@gifzilla1818 aha!
@@gifzilla1818 Not sure if I would advertise that, isn’t that illegal?
They'll do the same thing they did to Lone Tree. They'll sell enough properties around it and make it private. All the ponds I used to fish and all the fields I used to ride motorcycles and run through have fences around them. Its know wonder kids now days can't get out and do anything.
@@homiesapien828 that’s a really good point…..I bet you’re correct and that sounds much more damaging than You Tubers like me “ruining” spots
@FishOnwithCoachSteve I think you're kind of missing the point. It's not individuals that are ruining all these spots where you used to be able to do all this fun stuff. It's society getting greedy with being free. I grew up in larimer county and spent most of my time exploring trails/paths that the city has now put pavement on and charged taxpayers to use... I'm pissed. And the more people that enjoy it the more it'll cost to use.
@@homiesapien828 I totally agree 👍
Yeah, but TPC's new golf course was like super important, dude... what a sad world we live in
Thanks for the video. I’m trying to learn as much as I can before I make the trip up there in mid august. Hopefully I can hook into my first grayling!
@@westoangling Thank you for the comment! The key is light line and small presentation. The water is clear, but they are easy to catch with small baits and small flies. I love the double nymph rig on the fly rod with a strike indicator with two nymphs size 18 or so. If you see rising fish switch to dries and if you can’t figure what they are taking on the surface throw a wet fly to the rise! They will take it! If there’s a chop on the water with some wind you will do best …..if there’s no chop make sure to twitch the flies
@@westoangling oh also the hook set is a feel thing….it is a lighter hook set compared to trout since their mouths are so soft
@@FishOnwithCoachSteve awesome, thanks for the tips! Can’t wait for it, will explore as much water as I can while there but most excited for the chance to catch these guys!
@@westoangling go crush it! I keep things simple on this channel….its not rocket science to catch what is a bucket list fish for many!
I didn't know u can use traditionally sof plastics with a fly setup that really cool
@@esjac619 Thank you! That was the point of this episode for sure…doing something different that was extremely productive (although they were small fish)! Anything heavier would not work for casting very well….but something small and light like this was perfect for the fly rod that I used
@@esjac619 what’s more fun than catching a ton of fish on a 8 1/2 foot 5 weight fly rod (when you normally would use conventional tackle)? It was a fun experiment for me for sure
Just have to hope there’s enough forage for the bass to keep growing
