This is a shot I animated in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" I've had these drawings since working on the film, but I had no pencil test of it. So I shot the drawings, (on an old camera set up.) I worked over the original animator's drawings, (in blue and red,) pushing the drama and action, to contrast Looka's action from EB's, and simplifying the action. The focus is on Looka, so when he looks around, deciding what to do, I kept EB still so she didn't compete or distract from Looka. A silly bit- Sam is desguised by a donkey head as he searches for the Moolakamoo. The keen-eyed guards investigate him and, convinced he's safe, let him go. This is a call back to a previous episode where Sam, in partnership with his mom and wearing a full donkey outfit, breaks into the same building and encounters the same guards. A sad moment, and a difficult shot. I animated this shot. rotating the characters in place. Once the animation and clean up was finished, the background panned behind the characters, giving the impression of the camera moving around EB and Looka. This required very tight drawings for the final cleaned-up drawing pass..

I posed this for the animator- wanted Guy with lots of frantic energy, and lots of camera movement following Guy around. By contrast, I wanted EB fairly static, only moving to get out of Guy's way. We did several versions to get the timing and action right, as well as finessing the camera moves, keeping the camera naturally following Guy instead of anticipating his movement.

EB is angry at Guy- I posed this shot for the animator to guide them. I wanted EB staying calm and controlled, but with lots of anger boiling under the surface. The background and character layouts are visible underneath.

Looka's hair is a key design element, which I used as part of his character. I reworked many shots, adding more overlap to his hair to accentuate or punctuate Looka's attitude. In this shot, having been forbidden by his father to see EB, Looka angrily rebels. Loosely modeled as a James Dean type character, Looka's posture is perpetually leaning forward, head sunken down into his shoulders, wear...

EB, being a typical teenager, is angry with Guy, who, trying to be a good father, refuses to let her see Looka. Working over the original animator's work, I pushed EB's poses, added more overlap to her ponytail, and varied the timing to make a stronger contrast between her and Guy.

Dealing with sudden parenthood, Guy becomes over-protective of EB, freaking her out. I wanted to push Guy's nervous energy. This shot set the tone for subsequent shots, where EB's mind is on her new boyfriend, and Guy feverishly cranks the cheesegrater, creating a 2-foot high pile of cheese. Guy's hands and the cheesegrater are cycled on a separate level, slowly moving upward. Guy is also cycle...
