Papatura surf trip
มุมมอง 5K7 ปีที่แล้ว
Papatura surf trip in Solomon Islands was booked through Go Tours. Didnt score great waves but the break Tazzans was still fun on a 2 ft surf. The board I was riding was the 5'11'' short board and it performed well in the small glassy conditions, I would have loved to have got it into 3-4ft as it excels in punchy surf and would have made a good trip great!

First surfboard build, made from Paulownia with Western Red Cedar stringers and inlays. board is 6ft 20 x 2 1/3. Anyone interested in a beautiful timber surfboard that you can ride for many years or hang on the wall send me a message I'm on the north coast of N.S.W Australia . Also follow me on instagram for more pictures of recent boards. @tyron_morgan_ visit my website www.morganwoodsurfboard...
I saw many surfmaker to put fiberglas and resin on wodden board. Yuo used just a coat, is it bi component? And could you explain this chose. Thanks
It is just epoxy resin and I don't need fibreglass as there is enough strength in the timber
WOW🤩🤩
Lovely board ... and a great sound track ... just sayin'
Looks epic to paddle out and kill it on it!
Thanks for the inspiration mate ! th-cam.com/video/IUFPjQpQ7pM/w-d-xo.html
I like this method of cutting chambers is better than that which uses a router to cut out the material. This leaves you with a fair amount of scrap for other projects and is a lot less messy. Thanks for sharing your work mate!
Thanks and yes I've just recently started making fishing lure with the off cuts so it all gets used
@@morganwoodsurfboardstyronm1352 that's a rad idea!
Hey, Nice work man! I have a question. I see loads of boards being done quite thick (apprix 2.5') with a chamber system. Would a less thicker version (approx 1.3') without chamber work? Not that I don't want to do it, But i'm quite limited in equipment and the chamber will be quite difficult for me to do. So wanted to skip it and go for a finer version, but don't know if it will work. Thanks for your advise, Cheers PS: Just looking for a board to have fun riding
It wouldn't work the board would be to heavy. You need the thickness and chambering for buoyancy
@@morganwoodsurfboardstyronm1352 Damn, imagine surfing on solid wooden surfboards before foam and chambering came along!
great work, good video. one question: basically, You took 4“ slices of lumber to cut out hollow profiles with a wall thickness of 6 to 8 mm. or in other words: You littered out 85 to 90 percent of the material. Is there a more sustainable procedural method available? don‘t get me wrong, I admire Your craftsmanship.
In short no there isn't using this method but the tree only takes 8 years to grow to the size where its milled. I do have uses for most off cuts
Very cool
Thanks to have share your knowledge . Nice work !
How does the "venting system" connect all the sealed chambers separated by solid wood? Is the epoxy coating lighter than a glassed deck?
The boards are strong enough without glass reinforcement so I don't use glass which results in less resin being used and less weight being added. Check out my video on my venting system it shows how it works Thanks
Had a mate in the 60s had a wooden board we used to surf at Avalon south of Mandurah we both lived there surfing and fishing was our thing
So far I have not been able to find a ventplug that seems good enough here in norway, though I have yet to try the marine supply shops. I have found one that it roughly 3-4mm wide, is this too small? How big is the hole in the ones you use?
The hole is 13mm diameter, it wouldn't be to small as its only there to allow air out
@@morganwoodsurfboardstyronm1352 thank you!
Beautiful work 🙌🏼
Jesus christ, what did you use to varnish the board? Also you shoulda carved the logo in, that wood deserved a better logo application.
It's epoxy resin but no fibreglass reinforcement and as for logos I'm easy if the customer doesn't want them I'm happy to leave them off as many go on display when not surfed
@@morganwoodsurfboardstyronm1352 Ah ok nice, you do good work lad, inspired. I saw a Japanese board maker burning his logo onto the wood, I'm gonna try that on my wooden snowboards for sure!
Hey, I'm making my first wooden board at the moment and I was just wondering if for the finish I could use shellac and French pollish it. Or is epoxy better
Hey you can finish it with whatever you want and comfortable in getting a great finish. I use epoxy as it's hard wearing and long lasting
@@morganwoodsurfboardstyronm1352 wow thanks for the quick reply this helps heaps
What kind of wood do use?
Paulownia
Actually, I think what i was really wondering, sorry, was do you mark the individual rocker strips tip and end, top and bottom to get them lined up correctly before screwing them together?
Hey man, thanks a bunch for sharing this inspiring video! I have cut some spruce, I saw someone on the web used it, and getting paulownia wood in norway is rather difficult. One question though before I get started in my friends workshop, do you put marks on the rocker strips after shaping so you get them back together in the right spot when glueing, or is does that just give itself from the shape? Also, where I put the leash plug and fin boxes, do you leave a little extra wood? thanks so much again for posting this! david
Hey Hayden yes I leave timber around where the plugs go. As for rocker when I mark out the template it's always from the tail so I can line it up also sanding down to the line drawn ensures the rocker is right
Forgive me if this was already asked...what was the final weight?
Just under 6kg
Probably the best wooden surfboard build a man has ever created, I'm impressed bignuts.....don't know about that seedy moustache though 🦅🌀
Haha cheers mate
Such an amazing board😍 but no carbon fiber wrap? I would think that would be not as strong, or is it not needed? Can someone tell me if a wood board needs carbon fiber? Or just epoxy coating?
Hi Chris and thankyou for the compliment. You don't need any re-enforcement as there is enough strength in the timber. I have a board that's almost 6 years old and still no dents etc. Very durable
Morgan Wood Surfboards Tyron Morgan awesome, thank you so much and love the board!!! It’s an eye catcher for sure
Dude that is dope
Question re screwing the strips; you work rail to stringer with screws pointing to rail. This so no screws get in the way of shaping? I think I get it
Great workmanship and would enjoy owning one, my only complaint here were extremely poor safety presentation re no resperatory device, such as a dual cartridge mask when sanding, no eye protection, nor even the proper cartridges for the mask when using epoxy, as a former safety rep and spray painter at Disney in Anaheim I would have thought a presentation such as this would have been caught before it was aired since breathing in as much dust and debris as this young man was doing can screw-up your throat and your lungs - even with a two filter 3M mask I still have a damaged esophagus because that did not filter out the isocyanates produced from the catalyst which is needed to harden the paint, which only a supplied air system can effectively do.
Muito linda meu jovem, estou executando uma stand up e tava preocupado como deveria aplica a resina, mas vi vc aplicando diretamente na madeira ficou ótima .
Sorry only understand English
use translator app haha. ja ja
Sweet Thanks for sharing
Beautiful work. You had me up until the chambering part. When I finally get around to building a full size wood board I’ll either go wood over foam or just fat wood stringers, solid with foam in between. I tried one of Tom Wegener’s paulownia blanks (I shaped), but am thinking it’s more fun to not have to spend too much time building a blank. We’ll see. Haven’t made my mind up on that yet. I made some solid cedar paipo boards which were a lot of fun to make, and ride. Might make a solid longboard too one day. Maybe stuff some foam inside of it. 11’ pintail on my mind.
It looks like a lot of work but I have them down to 25-30 hours. If you don't chamber they end up to heavy
Top the top
Why do you need a wooden stringer if the board is wooden?
You don't it's just for looks, most people want them but I have made some without
C est beau😍
Do you have a store, or where can i buy one?
Hey max I make to order and can ship Australia wide. Shoot me a email to tyronmorgan@outlook.com with size and style board your interested in and I'll give you a price Thanks Tyron
I hope your not burning brain cells not wearing a respirator. After time you don't notice the fumes cause you get used to it but your brain doesn't. Overhead air extraction isn't good enough . Nice board though.
You can learn more about it on woodprix website I think.
Hermoso!!!
Epic
Damn I imagine u could build a real nice rig with your skills and tools
And nice work btw !!!
Thanks mate
I wish there was narration rather than the awful music
I wish people didn’t make pointless comments on the internet.
Which wood do you use ? Paulownia ?
Yer paulownia and usually Papua new Guinea rosewood stringers
I love beautiful works of art out of wood. Used to be my passion, now I just watch other people.
May I know why?
Because I’m in south Florida and it’s just to hot. Today with the heat index it’s 105. At 58 that’s to hot for me. I sold everything and now I just watch.
@@Imwright720 mmhh, you are the same age as my father, and now Im helping him build a wooden boat right now. I bet you got the skill as a good craftsman.
Katastrofa
Is there a need for a stringer for paulownia or balsa surfboards for strength?
I only use paulownia and for that no it's just for looks
@@morganwoodsurfboardstyronm1352 Sweet thank you. I am looking for a better solution for materials, the PU dust is so bad and difficult to dispose of properly. Why Paulownia over balsa?
@@rooter05_39 availability and price but also stronger and don't need fibreglass

Hi Morgan, is it possible to build the surfboard from hard wood like oak? And what is down sides of it?
It is although weight will be an issue, if you have the timber I'd suggest a mini mal or mal with the intention of making a board for cruising down the line
Qué tipo de madera usastes?
Sorry mate only know English

dude epic jut subscribed !! looks amazing. when you hollow out how thick do you leave the face and bottom 10mm?
Hey mate thanks, I just leave 8mm deck and 6mm bottom
This is badass!
Dude can you give to me measurements ?
It's 7' x 21" x 3" not sure on what the width was 12 inches up from the nose and tail as I made it a while ago sorry
