he’s living “high on the hog”. he just won grand champion at the fair
Great! So much work though. Congrats on the grant!!!
Any thoughts on making some homemade soaps?
I have toyed with the idea, but know very little about it. I need to do some homework and look into it
Why didn’t you wash it out completely on the outside also? That pump needs to be absolutely clean inside and out to ensure no dirt gets inside. It is a high precision piece of equipment and it can fail very easy from any dirt particles getting inside it. The top surface should be block sanded down or resurfaced to get all that pitting and rust scarring out. It needs to be extremely flat/smooth. Instead of blowing it out just use diesel fuel to wash it out. And put all of your bolts, washers and other parts in clean washer.
White morel nice. That's going to be big chicken huge feet.
AWESOME, brother!
Thanks!!
Looks like God blessed you. That calls for a celebration 😊🤙
Absolutely
Did you ever do the timing advance video?
I did, but didn’t get to record it. I will definitely record the next one
To sustain Cornish cross, it's a white cornish hen and a white leghorn rooster, I've never done it I raise brahmas for my meat, there's youtube video's on it.
that is good to know. I never researched it. I just knew that the Cornish cross probably wouldn’t live long enough to reproduce if they even could.
No problem, you can breed them if you cut their food way down but they have hybrid vigor, 3 Generations it's trash, but for fast meat in hard times it works. But again I've never done it.
Good luck with your first batch of meat birds for 2024! I am getting my 1st batch this week (25 Red Rangers). In May, I am getting 50 Black Austalorpes. They are known as good egg layers (300+ per year!) and can also be harvested for meat. I decided to order 25 females and 25 straight run. I figure that I'll keep all of the hens and send the extra roosters to freezer camp. Like you were saying, I don't want to have to rely on being able to order meat chicks every time I need to fill the freezers back up. Hopefully, I'll be able to keep the flock going as a self-sustaining source of both eggs and meat. Take care and God Bless.
I seen the red rangers on meyers webpage. something I noticed with last years Cornish cross was that they had 0 fat on them which makes them not good for dumplings. Does the red rangers have any fat on them and how fast do they grow?
@@darrylvance574 This is my first time raising Big Red broilers, so I can't tell you what the meat is like. According to McMurray's website (where I ordered my chicks), they should reach harvest weight in about 12 weeks - so about a month longer than Cornish X. Not ideal if you are raising for sale, but not a huge issue for me since they are for my own freezer. An advantage of the Big Red broilers over the Cornish X is that if for some reason you need to delay processing beyond them reaching weight, there isn't a concern about them dying from heart attacks or encountering leg problems like you can see with aging Cornish X. My chicks arrived on Thursday with one loss in the shipping box. The hatchery included a spare or two, so I still have the number I paid for. The surviving chicks look great - very active, and they started eating and drinking right away. Take care and God Bless.
I think we are gonna try the American Bresse dual purpose birds.suppose to be the best of both worlds but pretty expensive.i guess once you get your flock started they begin to pay for themselves.we will see
That’s cool. I’ll have to read on them. I’m not familiar with them.
That's a lot of work. Glad to see you're getting a good start!
Thanks!
We use cheese cloth to filter or sap, using a food grade 5 gallon bucket, stretching the cloth over the bucket and pouring the sap in. We got 2 gallons this year out of 15 trees, we tried the coffee filters but is was so slow
yes, coffee filters are SLOW! lol. Ours stopped up fast too.
Hey Daryl, man, it's like watching a neighbor figure it all out in real-time. Love how you're experimenting with propane this round; it's something I've been curious about too. That part where you finally hit the boil and the excitement in your voice - that's the highlight for me. It's like, yes, now we're cooking! It's a reminder of how rewarding this lifestyle can be, especially when we share our learnings and support each other in this homesteading community. It's all about trial and error, and you're showing that in spades. I'm also looking forward to your upcoming projects with the chicks and turkeys. It's great how you're focusing on meat birds this year. Your approach of not wanting to be "like a fart in the Whirlwind" with your projects made me chuckle but also resonated with me. It's about enjoying the process and learning along the way, which you're doing brilliantly. Keep up the great work, and thanks for sharing your journey with us. It's a reminder of how important it is to be part of a community where we can exchange tips, encourage each other, and celebrate our successes, no matter how small. Can't wait to see how the sugar-making turns out if you decide to go for it. Happy homesteading!
Thankyou for those kind words!
Well done, looks amazing, brother! Now waiting on that friends and family delivery at Boyd haha... Keep up the good work!
I’ll be down to see you all soon
You had a great 1st year!!
Yes! Thank you!
Looks like you have caught the maple bug!!! This is exactly how we got started. You’ve had a great 1st year!
Yes! Thank you!
Yum!
Darryl, that syrup was delicious! I really was hesitant to try it due to being on a diet...I was afraid it would trigger my sweet tooth. I've had real maple syrup before, but it had an off-taste to it. Not bad, really, but enough to make me not crazy about it. Yours didn't have any off-notes at all. It was just pure, maple goodness!
glad you liked it my friend
Looks AWESOME and where do I place an order lol... I haven't had any made that way since I was very little and my papaw made it!
Not sure I couldn’t tell but you need direct flame at the bottom of you pan. If your put that evaporator on top of that wood stove it won’t boil because of heat transfer. Just a suggestion. Use cinder block and build an arch that should help greatly. Oh plus you only want 1 1/2 inches to 2 inches in your pan went boiling.
cool! I appreciate that information. I think your 100 percent right on the direct flame
So glad it turned out well. Best Maple Syrup ever.
I was looking at the electric chicken scalders and they can get up to 230 degrees.that should be hot enough.just a thought
Awesome, so glad you all are making syrup. Thanks for the shout out!
Proud of ya Jr. I enjoy watching your videos
Thankyou bob. That means alot
Excellent video, very informative!… thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for your videos, very helpful and educational. I purchased a old 359 Peterbilt with a b model, spun a rod bearing, the man I bought the truck from said he thought the rack in pump stuck… what would cause this and is it repairable?… Thank you again
yes, should be repairable. Cant say for sure on the pump sticking, however, for whatever reason, when everything went to ultra low sulfur diesel, we had multiple issues with pumps seizing up. don’t know if it was lack of lube in fuel or breaking loose buildup in lines from years of regular diesel fuel. that’s just my opinion
You need a sharp blade. Long strokes work better. But, you need a sharp blade.
My friend..... wish I could have mentioned before hand.... sawzall and SS meat blades from amazon. Boy that would have helped you so much..... Sorry bud
Not a problem sir. Was a good experience anyways
Make a brats video!!!
Butchered many hogs with my papaw when I was younger and you are correct... a reciprocating saw is the ONLY way to go. He let me learn the hard way just like you haha... Nothing better than home grown food... You know what's in it and what isn't. To quote a TV show... Meat from the store makes me nervous... And doesn't taste near as good haha.
Hello can you make a farrowing assistance video?
I will look into that. We have pigs coming in march. Thanks for watching by the way
Let me know when you do the hog I will be glad to help
Good work bro 👍
We love our outside wood burner, another thing that is nice about them is when the electric goes out it dont take very big generator to run them and we have heat and hot water. I’ve also learned if you have the right wood in it at the time with just a bed of coals and the damper almost cut off you can use it at a smoker to cook with in a pinch
Good job! Boy do we know about firewood!
