The Amateur Golfer's Dilemma
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 19 ม.ค. 2022
The Amateur Golfer's Dilemma channel is devoted to helping golfers eliminate common error factors that compromise their golf swings. There are two primary error factors that cause most all golf swing faults, those being standing too close to the ball for the golfer’s rotation skills and swinging from the balls-of-the-feet rather than dynamically from the heels.
These two error factors, as well as many others, are discussed in my book called:
The Amateur Golfer’s Dilemma: How PGA Professionals Unknowingly Prevent Amateurs From Breaking 80, 90, and 100
\t
To be clear, the book and the approach of The Amateur Golfer's Dilemma TH-cam channel is to reduce or eliminate error factors that plague most amateurs and even some pros, for the purpose of freeing our swings from both mental and physical constraints that are imposed upon golfers by traditional golf instruction methods that have been passed on for generations.

Watch the footwork of young Moe Norman
Each golfer needs to find the footwork that works for them as individuals. Moe's changed substantially over the years...what people now think is Moe's original swing is actually completely different than his true original swing.

When Moe Norman was young, he swung like Scottie Scheffler

Pictures and videos don't lie but people do. It is such a tragedy that the ignorant golf world believes that Moe Norman's "heart disease" swing was his "original" swing. Young Moe was as dynamic as the guys playing today.
The irrelevant Moe Norman grip debate

Moe struck it pure no matter if he overlapped or split-handed the grip. Those who witnessed both grips said that his ball-striking was the same. A Moe Norman swing secret that has NEVER been revealed before

The secret I am referring to is the true nature of Moe's vertical drop, a term coined by Paul Bertholy, which was not an "arm drop" but a very obvious body drop from extended into flexed knees - he is not the only one who body drops in the downswing, but his method of getting there was unique. Laura Davies unique heel action through the ball

Origin of the "flying elbow" myth AND why it is not a problem
มุมมอง 2.4K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Since multiple PGA Tour winners had so-called "flying elbows," why is it considered a swing fault? For no good scientific reason...it is a purely made up notion. If you have adequate leg work in your golf swing, which need not be of a professional caliber, your backswing position can be uniquely yours and you should still be able to deliver a square club face at impact. .... and remember Moe was v wide at address. Hence the forward lunge through impact... which I could never get remotely close to.
I think you're exactly right. For years I thought Moe's vertical drop was to shallow the club. Nah; he meant his whole body! But not just down, back as well. Good for us older guys.
What do you think about Payne Stewart's swing? I've been struggling and am searching for answers. One extra thing to ask. Payne had a high lead shoulder at address. What does that help him accomplish?
i paused the video at 0:46 ................. I can tell you 100% what it is................. its "the reconnection of the back elbow to the body"
k so i was kinda wrong lmao, but a little right too... in that i think these two feelings go hand in hand, from the top of my backswing, bending knees and reconnecting the back elbow at the same time and then its like the rotation and wrist release team up together to hit the ball
How about your iron distance from the ball ?
if you come out of your posture ( stand taller - "early extension" ) during your forward swing ( downswing ) ...you will get onto your toes.... Stay in posture during the downswing thru impact and you will keep your weight on your heels naturally thru the swing. It's a lot easier to think about your posture height than whats happening in your feet.... Keeping the swing simple and uncomplicated.
Look how far away from the ball Moe sets up, compared to the others.
Bro, what's with the cheap looking power point presentation? This is TH-cam. Why don't you have videos on this drill? Go to a range, simulator and record. Your content is good and the fact that you take digs at golficity, I'm now a fan.
This makes so much sense. I'm 73 and can't move the way I did at 43. Two huge questions: Can I setup differently for the driver/fairway woods than I do irons? I.E. I'd be standing further away for driver than I would for irons - or should it be the same distance for each? And can I put more weight forward (still on the heel) on the irons to promote a downward strike than on the driver, where more weight would be on the trail heel to promote an up upward strike? Thanks! (PS - bought your book - it just got delivered, so if its easier to just say "see page x" than to type a reply - that's cool:)
He’s going in for his 6th back surgery. Will be interesting where he ends up.
are you kidding me, both feet completely come off the ground and move. this is terrible
Thank you so much for your analysis, I’ve been learning the more normal swing since Covid and I’ve been working on the very move you’ve discovered the last week. It is definitely giving me the feeling of greatness.
Sam Sneed always said to practice without shoes to learn your personal tempo and balance; and to curl up your toes to learn to turn on your heels… like a dancer. btw - excellent vid! bravo 👏
Love all your videos. Like your book too. I’m a former Natural Golf certified instructor and know from first hand experience the animus to Moe’s swing from the teaching mafia.
Love moe
Jimmy Bruen was as an amateur, favourite for the 1939 Open.
Is it possible to use a shorter shaft for one length like a p-wedge?
Is this some kind of joke?
Moe showed this a number of times and if you think about it he makes sense. Basically, Moe simplified the swing and the process.
Nancy Lopez didn’t address the ball in that position. She actually raised her hands to get into that position as the trigger motion for her swing. Not that this changes anything, I just wanted to clarify.
Holy Cow . Young Moe Norman footage i have not seen before !!! Gold . Do you have more !!
Ben Hogan is the greatest, in my opinion. What people don't understand is that the secret is hard work. Ben played 36 holes or more a day. He hit millions of folf balls and had unlimited access to golf clubs. That is the difference between pros and amateur. I have read 5 lessons a lot. I also have around 25 golf books, and Bens books is the best one of all. But if you must know what made his swing, you have to read. I bet over 90% of you missed the most important detail of his beautiful swing.
You just need to keep your head over the right foot and dont be afraid th use your pivoting hips as a pendulum.
On the backswing, he moves the whole of the golf club and dosent give the clubhead chance, to gain too much momentum, that it will later dissipate, in order to escape from the " rotating mass ", instead, the energy transmitted to the shaft creating flex! He appears to start the downswing, by planting the left foot, but he is infact dropping the unweighted left hip, which gravity drops the rotating mass, sending the already flexed shaft in the opposite direction, during transition, before it flexes the opposite way on the downswing. The holy grail of the golfswing, is to hold shaft flex into impact: releasing that flex out of the divot. Like a leaf spring : the flex is held by both extreme changes in direction, mechanically coupled and moving in phaze, with the freefalling mass . He is not pulling, or pushing the club. Neither, is he throwing. He is using the club like a WHIP !!!! Pure genius 😊
Hogan's Five Lessons should have been called "This is how You Dony Hook a Golf Ball". He even stated in an interview once that the lessons were for a "fella who hits a big hook". That being said the book is stiil about 90% accurate. For slicers, you want the grip a bit more in yhe fingers and stronger, as in two knuckles. At the top of the backseing don't cup your wrist, let it bow the other way. Other than that the book is golden.
Thought everyone did this!
Complete nonsense. My father-in-law was a golf pro and I was struggling with my game and wasn’t playing enough. He gave me Ben Hogan‘s book, I studied it and practiced the grip and swing and went from shooting over 120 to Breaking 120 then breaking 110 then breaking 100 and then breaking 90 all in one summer using only his teaching and the Ben Hogan book. Hogan says the more pressure (situationally) you put on the swing the better it gets and the more reliable it is
You're only missing one, maybe two components. The main one was Moe tilted at address somewhere between 15° to 25°, (depending on the club) which I believe contributed to him squatting through the swing on the downswing when his lagging leg went from straight to bent and slightly rotated, as it followed his torso through the rotation. This forces him to drop his body height naturally. To do otherwise would probably cause injury. He mentions this squatting down move in several videos, and you can obviously tell he does it on the rear view as well as front view of videos of him. Of course Moe was a horrible teacher, but most golf instructors are. Their words have subjective meaning, or are confusing without context, change from person-to-person, and don't align with the biomechanics of the human anatomy.
What exactly are we referring to as the “dip?” The lower body action? If so, the knees and hips are clearly on their way down and left before, and through, impact, it just hasn’t bottomed out yet. Are we not hitting down “through” the ball just because the club continues to descend to its low point after it strikes the ball? I’ve been in agreement with an every one of your videos I’ve seen up to this point, but either I’m just not seeing it the way you are, or this a bit of a reach. I don’t think you can separate the end of the hip action from the entire move, which is what I would say people are calling the “dip.” 🤔
I’ve always played better standing a bit further away from the ball, but it’s easy to creep back too close over the years. Thanks for the reminder 💪🏼😎
Can't move away from the ball if you're on the toes or balls. Nor can your body turn effectively. The point to be made is that keeping the weight moving toward the heels doesn't influence ball flight but allows for it. If you're concentrating on the heels and you're hitting the ball funny, check the hands and arms first before you mess up your pivot. Sorry, it is possible to do this. In your routine/process, if you tap the heels during your waggle and then start your swing by "slamming" the trail heel into the ground, the natural biometric response will be to "smash" the left heel down to start the downswing. It's a natural response you've set up in your feet. Foot rhythm if you will. Try it. Viktor Hovlind does that, very obviously.
Totally agree with your focus on distance from ball at setup; I tried it and instantly rotated properly and in balance, no early extension, fixed in 5 minutes after 15 years of failed teachings - terrific. Question - Just wondering if by standing farther from the ball, would it likely cause the lie angle of your clubs to need to be redone?
Gene "the machine" littler had the same footwork
What most don't understand is that weight forward promotes a steeper swing above the address established plane. Having the weight favoring the heels helps the pivot work as it should.
Extreme float loading. Bruin was a golf swing genius !
Dave, are the Pro's back on their heels because they get in their flexion and rotation? Meaning is being on the heels necessary because they setup with arms hanging down? If that is true, then why is it still necessary to have weight on heels for a setup for impact address?
Virtually every good player is on their heels as forward momentum toward the ball is death. But I cannot say one way or another regarding your questions.
@@theamateurgolfersdilemma72 Dave, it might just be that regardless if you do the pro setup, or setup for impact, the arms are going to be 'out there' at impact. The hanging arm setup has to move back to allow the arms to extend. The setup for impact player just has to maintain the setup radius. And because the weight of the arms swinging out in space pulls on the body, there has to be what David Lee calls a counterfall to maintain equilibrium. I think that might be it. By the way, enjoyed your book very much. Gold mine!
Brilliant. Watched many of your videos in 2 days. I have a question for you, if a Golfer lacks rotation skill (me) and doesnt early extend (me) and has a claasic arms straight down at address (me) what symptons might we see? Could be Heel strikes and hands even lower at impact?
I cannot say - there are lots of joint movement variables. And we need to find what works for us. Very general but accurate. EA Tischler is the best teach pro in my opinion.
As a lifetime amateur I first place my upper arms across my chest and then bend my body from my hip joints as I lay my club head perpendicular to the ball. After having aimed to start my ‘upswing’ I simply use the fast twitch muscles surrounding the trail side of my hip and for my downswing I use the fast twitch muscles surrounding my lead hip to pull it and my entire lead side out of the way to complete my downswing . Another words as I swing my club my only thoughts are twitch right hip/ twitch left hip and the magic behind my swing has last me a lifetime of fun and satisfaction. Of course my putting sucks. 😂 🥂😊👍Cheers
I`m glad I caught this Video.I always thought Moes drop meant the arms thus creating an in to out swing with a flatter plane. I kept my head still and and just dropped the arms and it was a shocking mess.I will revisit the idea and see how it goes
"Like me" sounds correct. Like can be a preposition, which takes the objective case (me) or a conjunction "like I do".
Coming from a 15+ handicapper
I teach the exact same way you describe it. My clients all say the same thing. It feels weird. But, keeping your arms away from your body clears the hips like said because we can’t do what the PROS do. Based on their body type. I teach to the individuals body type. Most amateurs just wanna make contact. I find this is the simplest way to create their desired outcome. It’s about the client’s abilities.
I think it is the best way to start as it is the least complicated and can lead one to find their true move. I am able to stand with my feet much more narrow now, but still keep my arms/hands away from my body. Your clients are lucky to have you.
Hi all, the bright side to all this, is this, the source creator honors your choices. Meaning, if you don't wish to participate with the miscreation's of the borg, NPC's or hive mind collective, you do not have to. This life experience is way more amazing than we have been led to believe. Our consciousness level does create the experience we will have, thus the reason for all the false or confusing teachings in all domains. Revealing your deep ignorance
Be careful, the flying elbow polices are out there like the cupping of the lead wrist as they are demons lol. They are both good to use just depends on the individual because the ones that say they are both bad are hooking/slicing the ball with whatever they consider proper right now so who are they to judge 🤣🤣 fly away elbows and if you still say it's bad go ask the GOAT, Jack Nicklaus his opinion.
You are 100% correct. Very few people have the postural balance and hip internal rotation to play golf like Hogan. Most amateurs would be better off setting up with the club on the shoulder plane like Moe Norman.
You clearly think for yourself, so many of the other comments are from Hogan cultists. Check out EA Tischler - he is the best way to go. Extremely scientific and an exceptional teacher.
So basically take a Moe Norman single plane approach which would benefit most amateurs who shoot in the 90’s
Dave I've been absorbing your book, which is fantastic. I've been working on trying to get on the heels more. I think I've done alot of damage to my lead knee and back by rotating on the forefoot of my lead foot my whole golf career. Today when I played I made good progress on staying on the heels. I almost felt like a hammer thrower. I have a question. In trying to find the balance, and playing the ball further away from me, I experimented with trying to keep good posture in my thoracic portion of my back. I was trying to not hunch over as I setup to the shot. I found that by doing that I was able to comfortably keep on the heels throughout the swing. Your thoughts? P.S. Felt zero back pain and stiffness both during and after the round. I can't recall the last time that happened.
