there is no card collector that likes to rip up any card. it feels like a violation of the laws of gravity. If CEO meyer had still been in charge in '98 instead of bailing on Pinnacle, he would have never approved the rip the big card gimmick to move forward. This is an idea the Yogurt eating guy at Pinnacle probably came up with...yeah look up that story online from the Pinnacle Hockey card guy that was there in '98.

So many 98 golds were backdoor and unnumbered, really makes those cards less awesome. Set was very unpopular so it makes sense why it's rare

Have you been able to find the Game versions? They came out of Zenith. There is something odd going on with the Griffey Seasons card from Zenith. I agree with you on the Oranges, people just aren't even listing them on Ebay.

@@cardsandcomics For Maddux I have the game orange and purple, but I’m missing all emeralds except the play. Mostly, I just don’t want to pay up for them, but they’re sweet cards so I’m always keeping an eye out! I also wonder with the Zenith “Dare to Tear”… how many Epix Emeralds are still stuck inside the sealed 5x7 cards? I have an intact Maddux 5x7 that could have something amazing like an Emerald Griffey sealed inside it. Maybe I need to contact that CT scanning company! 😂

@@cardsandcomics I do agree with you though that there’s something else going on with this set - certain cards are just WAY tougher to find than others, even discounting the Certified portion of the checklist.

Just looking at the Pop Count the Emerald Barry Sanders Moment has the highest pop count vs the Purple and Orange. I think thats just due to value. I need to look at the actual distribution insert rations and what has been sold raw to get a better idea.

Its 30 for the moment emeralds but there is just fewer product they were packed into. If any product was rare it would be the '97 -98 Score Hobby Reserve football that had the reserve collections inside. I think some epix were in there and those boxes are very very limited just like the baseball Hobby reserve.

Yes, all of the cards are either card I own, have owned or want to own in the future. I put the index together while researching values and felt it was as representative as any index out there and was weighted more to Vintage vs Modern.

I agree and with some cards like the 52 Mays and Jackie maybe over correcting a bit there may be a window of opportunity. But like I said if you don't plan on owning for at least 10 years you may not come out ahead if money is your concern.

My worst card mistake of all time was with a 52 Mays. I recognized that 52 Topps Mays was so undervalued in comparison to 52 Topps Mantle. Still is with Mantle 52 Topps around $135,000 compared to your $19K+ on Mays. But the difference was so glaring to me back in 2000, yep 2000. I purchased a BVG Mays 6.5 that looked so amazing to me for around $2800 and had it regarded with PSA. This was when Beckett first came out grading vintage so it was a risky venture. It came back regarded a PSA 7. For some reason I thought this card should have been a PSA 7.5 or even an 8. The edges and corners were so clean and sharp. I held that card for 5 or 6 years and ended up selling it close to what I paid for it. I just could not understand it not going up in value over that time. If I had held onto it would have been a $40K plus card today. It's very difficult to see that far ahead but yep if a card collector you need to visualize that.

I agree, but there is some fluctuation, and some sets get hot and take off even in the vintage world. Look at Josh Gibson as another example.

Honestly, the grade shouldn't really matter on the rare cards.

@@vintagecollector5340 Jason said he graded them to sell them, and unfortunately a 7 to an 8 does matter. He said that as well, I’d assume he did the research. But I do agree, a numbered card or something super scarce, grade shouldn’t matter to a collector very much.

@@ClementeCollector People just too brainwashed with grading to understand what true scarcity is. Grading only matters to the more plentiful cards. On those low numbered cards, there's no reason whatsoever for those grades to matter. It's just a shame people don't understand that, but it's also why I got out of cards. I still enjoy the content from time to time, but nitpicking on condition and worrying about the tiniest scratch or slight ding drives me nuts. Give me something super rare anyday where I don't have to worry with it. That's just my two-cents.

@@ClementeCollector Oh, I still collect. I just don't collect cards anymore. I got into original photos and photo slides. I enjoy the extreme rarity. Nothing quite like buying a Griffey or Bonds rookie photo slide for just fifty-dollars (or less per photo slide) and never seeing another duplicate.

The only thing they're relying on is people submitting their cards to them. As long as numerical grades are treasured, they'll always have a job.

I hear what you’re saying. The sad fact is that the “minimum wage kid’s” opinion holds a ton of weight / clout regarding the value of these cards to potential buyers. If you can 10x a card’s value by sending it off, wouldn’t it be silly to NOT do that?? Also, some “kids” apply the PSA standards inconsistently from their peers, making submitting (especially 90s) more of a crap shoot.

When there are lots of a given card out there (i.e. high pop wax era rookies), a high grade is a great differentiator and a way to stand out among the many copies out there. But that grade differentiator doesn’t matter so much for the super rare stuff like PMGs, Super Raves, or Crusade Reds. PSA 6 Star Rubies will still sell well. That being said, getting one of those super rare cards ALSO in a high grade still increases the value significantly.

@@HighPopProfessor Yeah, supply and demand, but it's important to remember differences between artificial scarcity and organic scarcity. In most cases, yes, higher numerical grades are still more desired on rarer cards, but that can also be chalked up to people not understanding true scarcity. To be fair, however, many of the 90s inserts are just fancy parallels to an already-existing base card within the set. This is where the difference between artificial scarcity and organic scarcity comes in at. With that being said, how truly rare are those parallels? I've personally struggled with that aspect, as well. That's like the 1998 Jordan Metal Universe PMG: the red and green varieties are just a parallel to a base card in the set. Therefore, its personally hard for me justifying the high value. Turns out, PSA hasn't been the only one manipulating the markets with artificial scarcity...it's also been the card manufacturers. While PSA is busy manipulating and pop-controlling numerical grades to market their services to the public, card manufacturers are busy manipulating their own product with parallels to help market to the public.

Yes, an extremely condition sensitive set. It is very common for them to get indents and wrinkles in the foil like his Thomas.

Ditto. It’s a wavy indent that goes through the color portrait of his face - like a ripple. I’ve had this happen on the reverse of ‘99 Stadium Club one of a kinds, but that’s the reason for that grade. Also, the Frank Thomas New Pinnacle Green Artist’s proof has a small dent over the “S” in Sox at the top. It looks like it could be mistaken for the etching all over the whole card, but it’s not quite parallel with the other etching immediately surrounding it. I’d probably pop out the 6s and the metal cards with the weird edges - I agree with you that these are analogous to O-pee-chee rough cuts - it’s just how they’re made. I think the 6s are actually graded fairly though, so I don’t know if I’d resubmit, or maybe just keep raw. They were quite harsh with you in this order here, and that’s tough with the high quality of cards you sent in with this order. I think the harshest grades you got back in this order were the 7s. That Reggie White 96 Certified Mirror Gold should be an 8/9. There’s some wild inconsistencies happening at PSA… I have three PSA orders of varying size that I have recently had returned (they’re at my parents’ house, so I don’t have them in hand yet) and there was a card in almost identical shape as your Reggie. My card was a 97 Bowman’s Best Greg Maddux refractor that had two fairly prominent refractor lines in it - a vertical and a horizontal. It came back a 10. Heck, I also sent in a Maddux ‘99 Finest Gold Refractor with a pretty bad corner that I expected a 7 or 8 on… but I got a 9. I’m eventually going to make videos about these grading orders of mine when I get these cards back in hand, but I feel like I just got lucky with my grader in many cases. In general, I think your disappointing grading experience, especially with 90s stuff, is more common though. I agree with your assessment that many of the new graders are not familiar with these 90s sets and their quirks, and this is largely contributing to harsh grades and inconsistent grades.

They couldn't do it right the first time, why do you think you will do it right the second time?

@@AtomicZombieAndroid sometimes it takes 2, 3, 4, & 5 times. Hoping to get different graders each time.

Only thing raw to grading works for anymore is "cleaning". Once they can detect the polish there will be no more profit in grading. Probably why they are in no rush to figure it out.
