How to soften a copper washer so it seals properly - do this for new and used copper washers
New and used copper washers should be annealed to soften them up so they fit leak free. Copper washers can be reused after annealing them.

Weber IDF linkage - The Chinese Hex Bar - mods needed to help you to synchronize your carbs properly
มุมมอง 10511 หลายเดือนก่อน
Buyers BEWARE. The Chinese hex bar linkage will drive you nuts if you hope to synchronize your carburettors and then drive your VDub. The slop (play) in the linkage is so bad that I was getting plenty movement on one carburettor (up to 2 progression holes open) while the other carburettor linkage was just moving around taking up the slop. You cannot synchronize this linkage without modifying it...

    • @TonyZVW
      @TonyZVW 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@trustworthyjane5243 if you are hammering on it, some will come off and stick to the hammer. I've seen copper coated steel washers that were supplied as copper. Put a magnet to it and if steel, it'll stick to the magnet. Copper isn't magnetic. Or try to anneal it, if it's steel it won't be soft enough to twist by hand

      @@TonyZVWThanks for info. I was able to brake it in half and it was copper colored all the way through not sure if that means anything or if they their able to mix a copper paint with other types of metal to make them seem like copper? But I also experienced that when hammering this particular brand of copper washer (Helifounder) I could not get a texture or shine from them.

    This is brilliant! Copper washers are one of those where you think "Well, just get a new one," but you invariably never have the right one to hand when you need it. And when you need it, it's always on a Sunday afternoon, the shops are shut, and you won't be able to pick up another one until next Saturday!

    #### *I don't understand?* 🙋 Plz correct me if I'm wrong: heating a metal red hot softens it, right? When it's red hot, immediately throw it into water will immediately HARDEN it, instead of softening it, no?

    • @TonyZVW
      @TonyZVW 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For mild steel, you are correct. This process will harden it. For copper, this process softens it. Different rules apply for different materials.

    Works with all sump plug washers and also copper brake banjo washers. Also a good idea to flatten any deformation of the washer with a flat headed hammer and then rub on a nice flat surface of very fine 1000 grit emery paper. Re aneal. Beats me why modern mechanics charge people for a new sump plug and washer every oil change

I would still keep a new spare, Ive seen them get to the point that with repeated uses they deform uneven and leak. Flat mild steel washers aren't springy and they don't come loose unless you don't tighten them properly. Soft washer deforms into all the nooks and crannies and makes a completely leak proof seal
