Concrete Countertops for DIY Outdoor BBQ and Fireplace
I’m finally going to build my pour-in-place concrete countertops for our BBQ and fireplace. It’s been a long journey; but it's time to get this done. I will be building my own custom forms to make the pour in place countertops. I have two countertops to build, one around the BBQ and one around the fireplace. This was a fun and challenging project, and the countertops look fantastic.
Tools and items needed: Concrete Countertop mix, Concrete dye, a cement mixer, a ¾" Melamine panel, some plastic trim, a tape measure, a screw gun drill driver, a Table or Miter saw, a hammer, a Brad Nailer, wood glue, a magnesium trowel, concrete finishing trowels, a hand sander, diamond sanding pads, some buckets, some builders paper, gloves and your personal safely gear.

Do you have a light switch that doesn't work? Or are you wanting to replace an old light switch with a new one? It’s actually very easy to do. I’ll show you how you can easily and safely replace a light switch. The light dimmer switch in our kitchen started having issue a few weeks ago. It still turns the lights on, the issue is sometimes you can’t get it to stay in the off position. I'm going ...
Transform Your Outdoors with Affordable 5w LED Lights
มุมมอง 5304 หลายเดือนก่อน
I needed some lighting for the outdoor BBQ and Fireplace that I am building. I’ll be installing some LED lights to the post of the Pergola. It should be simple enough, but to make it more challenging I don’t want to see any exposed wiring or conduits. I should probably get it done before I completely seal up the fireplace and BBQ structure that I’m building. That way I still have access to the ...

Fix your oven with ease: bake element replacement tips

The other night my wife was using the oven when the bottom element started to spark and arc? She turned it off, but it kept sparking and glowing red hot. I had to pull the oven away from the wall so I could unplug to turn it off. I didn’t want to wait two weeks for an OEM replacement, so I ended up purchasing one much cheaper and could get it in a couple of days. PRYSM Bake Element amzn.to/3xzc...

Thank you Paul- after hear a loud hissing sound at 3:30 am your video helped me turn of the house water supply. Too much calcification for me BUT I knew what to expect when someone came in to fix it. Thanks Again 🙏🏽
Thanks, I appreciate the comment. It’s always nice to know that I’ve been helpful.
👍
The counter tops came out awesome. You did a fantastic job. Quick question: what type of plastic strips did you add to the sides (opposite the edge forms)? Also, did you leave those on there, or did you removed them when you removed the forms?
Thanks, I just ordered a 1/8” sheet of black plastic from Amazon. I think it was 4’ x 1’. No way to remove them after pouring the concrete, now they are covered by the stucco. Since they were black couldn’t really see them anyway.
@@BruBuilds Thanks so much. One last question for you... From the cement board height, how much did the actual height go up after adding the counter top?
@@joeaguirre3069 The side profile of the upper one is about 2" and the lower one about 3". The actual thickness is about 1/2" less, because it does overhang on the sides.
Where do you live that you don't have to worry about those pipes freezing?
South west
Wonderful vid....thank you
Always use anti seize on the threads of the union. Makes it easy to take apart in the future if necessary.
Good to know, thanks
Where do you buy this metal framing material please help me
I purchased mine from Westside Building Material. On the Clark Dietrich website they have a where to buy sheet that will give you the email of the person over your region. I don't recommend using the ones from your local box store because they are not the same thickness. www.clarkdietrich.com/sites/default/files/media/documents/CD_Where_To_Buy.pdf
There is a flexible alternative to your galvanized riser, it’s called an X-Riser, it simplifies the whole installation!
Thanks for the tip
I would dump my dirty water outside in case of hairs and grease and grime. But I'm in a country part of my city so I can do it since we are by a wooded area lol. I know some people can't do that but it might be helpful for your pipes.
I've been following your build for a wile and it has helped me a lot! Thank you very much for showing us your work. Any progress on the stucco? I am currently getting ready to do stucco over cement board but have been waiting for you to show how to properly do it. Thank you again.
Thanks for watching and the encouraging comment. I finished the stucco over a month ago, just haven't had much time for editing. I did use a bonding agent on the cement boards, embedded stucco mesh into the base coat and ended up doing 2 semi-smooth color coats on most of it. Had some challenges getting it even and smooth the first time but learned a few tricks and had better results with the second coat. I used a 20/30 color stucco mix, which is applied at 1/8" thickness, so it started to dry rather quickly. Using a red foam float immediate after applying it gave me the best results. Hopefully I can find some time to edit and get the video out soon, I may do a quick video this weekend to show the results, you are not the first person to ask about it.
@@BruBuilds Awesome, thank you soo much! Did you use anything on the corners like metal corners? Thank you again.
Yes I put wire corner beads on the lower corner and used a drip screed along all the countertops.
@@BruBuilds Last question, did you install the corner bead under or over the mesh? And thank you soo much for your help.
Corner bead and drip screed attached first. I embedded the stucco mesh into the base coat, I didn't get the self-adhesive type, so it didn't stick to the cement board. But I think it worked better to put on about 1/4" of base coat, stick the mesh into the stucco, then add another 1/8" of stucco. I would overlap the mesh around the corners.
What software did you use for planning.
It’s an old animation program called Lightwave3D. I use it because I know it. I’ve heard of some people using Sketch up.
Well done video! Thanks
Thanks
Thank you for this video.
Welcome
Dude, I do commercial havc. I run ridgid and people on Milwaukee and Dewalt are stunned by the affordability. I jacked up 2 batteries because I got them wet. No questions. Replacements were sent and they said to drop the damaged batteries at home depot. I always register as soon as I buy.
I just sent a battery in, hopefully there are no issues with a replacement. Someone else posted he’s been without a battery for over 6 months.
@BruBuilds I didn't have to send my battery on. Ridgid mailed the new one and said to take my deads to home depot. Did you register within 90 days?
Thanks. Great video. Are you producing an upcoming video for the stucco?
Yes, I finished the stucco, in the process of editing it together.
That looks really good and what a frickin coincidence 😂. My wife and I were finally able to afford our first house and it has a cracked fireplace mantle that I have yet to figure out how I'm gonna go about repairing or replacing it. But I love that dark color of the concrete! Gives me some inspiration thank you!
Thanks
Great tutorial! I came here looking a header detail, and you provided a great one. Nice work on your project! Thank you!
Thanks, glad you liked it
This video was awesome and very helpful THANKS for sharing 👍
Thanks for the comment
Your finger and hand placement on some of these cuts is definitely giving me anxiety
dude the snake thing is stuck inside the pipe thing, im sitting here about to cry caue idk what to do. someone help me please it wont reverse uts only going forwards😢😢
Have you tried unplugging the auger and spin the drum reverse by hand?
as a real lather this was hard to watch lol
Any advise on how I could do it better?
your a good guy, my name is Paul too lol
Hey Thanks
I’ve been waiting for a Rigid battery replacement for 8 months and keep hearing it will be in next month. Been told this several times. Ugg!!
Oh, bummer. I'm just about to send on in.
good info, thanks
I'm amazed you stayed so positive and kept smiling through all that hard work. Great job. I'm going to invent some new curse words if i go through with this.
I'm about to do it again on the side of the house...😂
Sample size of 2 is too small. It’s basically anecdotal
What mix is that?
Quikrete countertop mix. I talk about it more in the full video. Pouring Concrete Countertops for Outdoor BBQ and Fireplace th-cam.com/video/uqkPTVE4dsU/w-d-xo.html
the floating around walking transition in that one shot was so random but made me lol. wasn't expecting that in a carpet cleaning review.
lol…Need to have some fun while cleaning carpets
It's absolutely beautiful..amazing piece of work..thank you for the video...
Thanks
What if they water is not leaking from the pipe?
Drainpipe or hose? Most common failure would be a rubber O-ring where the hose attaches to the valve or faucet
Nice! It’s on my to do list
My drain looks like but no screws so please help me to remove this cover
It’s probably a snap in cover. Gently pry up the edge with a flat blade screw driver.
I went with ridgid for the same reason the warranty on the batteries as well, I have drills and saws and drivers the new chainsaw and leaf blower and they all do everything I need them to do. I just had an issue with a 3ah battery I bought back in 2013 it stopped working. I called Ridgid answered a couple questions and they are replacing the 3ah 11 year old battery with a new gen 4ah battery without any hassles. So right there that is well over a $100 savings for me to get a new battery
How do you like the Ridgid leaf blower, my old, corded one just died. Would like a battery powered one, tired of dealing with extension cords.
@@BruBuilds I like it, I used it all last winter for blowing the snow off the driveway vehicles and sidewalk instead of shovelling in our -40c Northern Alberta winter 🥶 and this summer for blowing the grass clippings and blowing out the garage and again no problems and lots of power on turbo The normal full power is kinda pointless and noticeably weaker then turbo and I just hit the turbo button 99.99% of the time so not sure why they just didn't make full power the turbo power I use the 8ah and they last 20'ish mins on a full charge using turbo so it uses a lot of power But like I had said I have the batteries and their warranty is tool and battery so that is why I buy Ridgid I paid like $160 cdn plus taxes for it as a tool only and the same for the chainsaw and they both have done what I wanted them to do so I am happy. I also just bought the weed whacker as my old one was a black and decker one with different batteries so again for $160 for the trimmer as tool only I picked one up this summer havn't had a chance to really use it yet gonna clean out the backalley along my fence here this fall with it but now all my tools in my house are ridgid and use the same batteries ☺ The turbo mode like I said was my only "con" as I just hit the turbo all the time when I use it so why not just make full power the turbo power
Turbo sounds more impressive. Like a guitar amp that goes to 11.
I’ve been waiting over eight months for battery replacement. You must be a god. 😲
Too much pipe dope.. Proper amount is to only fill the root of the threads and leave the first thread or two clean. All that extra oozing out is a waste and unprofesional.
Concrete will never bond after layering it like that
Who spreads muck around with their hand like a child playing potpies in a sandbox!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤡

You are cleaning the drain too often because you are not using enough water to flush out the clog, you are poking a hole in the clog. you remove the snake and say the drain is open but you really don't know because hou haven't poured several buckets of water down the drain..
Thanks for such a complete demonstration effort. I’ve used my 25’ drill mounted snake has paid for itself many times over. Now it’s time to upgrade. For anyone balking at the price of a good 100’ drain auger? Check the price of a plumber to come out for a few hours with his. Once.
I had a 25' snake that I would clamp inside a half inch drill chuck, without a drum. It would usually end up in a tangled mess. Using this is a breeze compared to that snake.
Looks great. Thanks for the video.
It was a lot of work, but worth it. Thanks
How did you cut the cement bag in half without it spilling all over?
With a utility knife. I thought I had a shot of me doing that but couldn’t find it.
Impressive!
Thanks
This is very thorough! Your decision making process in choosing cement was insightful!
Went full circle on that one.
This is very helpful thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Once you have roots in the pipe does the water leak out of the breach or do the roots themselves keep the breach sealed?
The ones that I have seen, I haven't seen that many, the roots would fill the breach. But it just takes a sliver of a leak for a root to grow through. Then grow bigger inside the pipe.
It’s a very nice job, but applying color to cement is a hassle and many times comes out with different shades. If it cracks or a piece comes off you will not be able to match the same color ever. I prefer to stucco smoothly, apply a primer and paint avoiding work hassles with color added to cement.
It was the first time for me to use color in stucco, definitely a learning process. I do like the look of it other than it is much lighter than the sample. Thanks for the comment
Every year we have to call someone in to snake out our basement plumbing due to tree roots. It usually runs us $175 a shot and I'm thinking about doing it myself. I guess my biggest concern is could I destroy my plumbing?
You could always rent one before purchasing, just to see how it goes. It's really not that difficult, just go slow. I would be a little wearier if there are clay pipes involved. At $175 you could have the machine paid for in two uses.
How do you go foward ?
There is not a forward, you tilt it back and push it forward. When you drag it backwards that is how the machine sucks up the water. Pretty basic machine, I'm sure there are more sophisticated cleaners out there.
Thanks for the update! Will you add a certain type of mesh before stucco? What methods will you take to prevent cracking? Thanks!
I applied a concrete bonding agent to the cement boards, added a drip screed around the countertops and a wire mesh to the corner. I have some fiberglass mesh to embed into the base coat of stucco. I'll be doing a 20/30 semi smooth colored stucco coat. Hopefully I can get to it this week.
