Power Sequencers vs. Regular Power Strips
I explore the key differences between power sequencers and regular power strips, breaking down how they work and why it matters for your audio equipment or industrial setup.
Note - The sequencer will turn on equipment that starts upon the application of power. Some equipment that uses "soft" power switches, that will not start until the switch is pressed, will not be able to be started by a simple power sequencer.
Discover how power sequencers protect your gear from electrical surges, prevent power-on pops, and extend the life of your equipment.

Wow. Thank you for making this video. Really helped me get my pellet stove truly clean. 🤘🏻
That's awesome, you're welcome! Deep cleaning with a leaf vacuum can really clean out the stove and improve performance, plus it's fun to do.
What I am wondering why Barry did not use the aluminum heatsinks that were already in the box to connect the bridge rectifier ??? The twist terminals from the transformer should always be taken off and cleaned MINIMUM. THEY always have corrosion which affects the power and performance of all units. JUST saying as I have repaired hundreds of these type of units. I will stand by my experience with successful repairs and many happy customers. Have yourself a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Barry. Peace vf
Thanks for the tip! So far at the unit that I repaired has been working well. The old Selenium rectifiers were simply riveted to the sides of the box cover as a heat sink. The new silicon rectifier is a lot more efficient, so I don't think it puts out as much heat as the old ones, and likewise I just used the enclosure and a dab of heat conductive paste to dissipate any heat. In my use, it never gets very warm.
@@Barry-Watson Point well made and taken Barry. The new rectifier is way more efficient and cooler running. Have yourself a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Peace vf
@@Barry-WatsonI like your logic Barry. The new rectifier is way more efficient and well priced. I have learned that using aluminum as a heat sink really make electronic components perform best. Peace vf 😀😀😀
This was a super super super helpful video. Thank you so much for this information you’re a saint
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful!
I absolutely love it when someone explains an electrical system using mechanical examples. You are a great teacher!
Thank you for the kind comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Great video! If this looks fine but still cranks and doesn’t start, any other ideas?
Engines only need three things to run, good spark, compression, and proper fuel mixture. I'd probably make sure that you have fresh fuel and good spark, that's an easy first step. Best wishes.
@ I appreciate the quick reply! I’ll try that out. Mower has been sitting for a while per the old owner. Thanks!
If the engine has been sitting around for a long time, my suspicions would lean towards the fuel system. You could have old fuel residue anywhere the fuel goes, the carburetor, fuel cutoff solenoid etc. I'd start by draining all of it out and flushing with fresh fuel, and anticipate that you might need to do a carburetor cleaning or overhaul and make sure you don't have any gummy fuel deposits in the system. There is a product called 'mechanic in a bottle' which is supposed to dissolve old fuel varnish deposits if they are not too severe. Dump out all the old fuel, put some fresh fuel in with this solvent, wait a couple days, and just maybe it will come to life without major disassembly,
@@Barry-Watson great! Appreciate the info, I’ll let you know how it goes!
I thought my problem couldn't have been as easy as this but it was! You're video is pure gold. Now my mower starts like new. Thank you!
Excellent! I'm glad that helped!
very nice format and information delivery. thanks 🙏👍✌️
Glad you liked it!
Great video, though I'm still unsure that when looking for an underground cable, in my case the Mains Power Cable coming into the property from the power utility company to the exterior mains switchboard located oon the exterior wall of the house, where exactly should I connect the Emitter unit after earthing?
I would probably attach the transmitter unit to the power cable at the house, and trace from the house outward. I think that would be the easiest location where you could tap onto the cable.
I had this in church with a 1x10 combo but the overall sound levels were much lower so was easy enough to boom over the band. The culprit was the bass amp was 4 feet from the back wall and from where I was standing the reflection from the wall was causing a cancellation where I was but it was still prominent out front. I just tilted it against the back wall and turned down and I heard what the audience heard. Have the speaker part of the amp less than 2.5 feet from the wall and pointed at you for improved mids. That or further than 8 feet if you can.
It worked on my 40D which had been sitting around, and I knew it worked fine last time I had it. Thanks so much for the trick!!
it bit long video but. it did help me a lot to decide if I should do a long run RCA cable or the right speaker wire. thank you
Thanks for watching!
Great overview Barry, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it
@Barry-Watson Yes, I own 12 Convoy flashlights! The best price to performance brand out there! The M21B with an XPH 70.3 HI 5000K emitter is the absolute bomb. If I could have only one flashlight, it would be it! If you decide to purchase one, let me know how you like it.
Thanks! Great tip!
Because they made it to be more like a Sennheiser?
To my ear, some Sennheiser models sound extra crispy (high end), the Shure Beta 57/58 have a weird midrange. These may work good for some people's vocals, but they're usually not my 1st pick.
@@Barry-Watson Indeed!. The crisper high end in their e835 models are perfect for utilizing compressor on stage when you have the presence of things like cymbals on a drum set, and reduces the need to boost 12k and 16k on the main mix just so the clarity can come through. Mixing rock and metal is where this applies more than other genres. Since I started using them, I only use Shure for their durability factor if I'm encountering people who are "rough" with their gear. Either can still be EQ'd to suit your taste, so it's really a matter of personal preference, of course. What I don't enjoy is that the spike around 5k (as opposed to higher frequencies in a Sennheiser) in a Shure is the cause of more than half of the feedback issues I ever encounter when it comes to a smaller stage area. My preference was due to overall practicality with mixing live music, and this was after over 20 years being very used to how a 57/58 sound.
Meows for you
Excellent review.

Thank you so much! just yesterday i bought a 600d and after chargung the battery today it wasnt turning on. Had to do this multiple times. if anybody else is reading this and this fix didnt work, try another 2 times. this guy is a legend

OMG! Thank you! This really worked! I appreciate your video so much!
Thanks! I'm glad I could help!
Some people still think fuses and breakers on the power strips protect their gear. When in fact they only protect the wire. And prevent fire. I'm not sure about surge suppression? Dr. Barry, What say you?
Overall, I would tend to agree. I would say that anything is better than nothing, and putting a RF choke and some MOVs across the line, like you find in most power strips can help suppress those brief transient spikes. That can't hurt. But typical power strips I don't put a whole lot of faith into for offering serious protection from line disturbances. Voltage regulator units which isolate all the equipment through a transformer take protection to a higher level, and that starts getting expensive. I think the power supply in the equipment offers a lot more filtering than typical power strips do, negating much of the necessity of the power strip. If your line voltage has really radical shifts or you take a lightening strike, I don't think anything is going to save you. But, being able to consolidate all of your power cords, and keep your wiring tidy inside of the rack is a big benefit. I also like the units that include a voltmeter, which gives me peace of mind with the power feed is at least reasonable.
Hey my Canon g16 just wont turn on the battery is Fully Charged i looked up multiple Tutorials but it still didnt work can someone please help me ? Thank you :)
Always a grab bag of knowledge. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Question for anyone who knows....been unsuccessful trying to find the answer.... Is it normal for the engine to surge for a few moments after it is started ,when it is cold outside ???... My carburetor and all components on my cub cadet seem fine...but it surges for about a minute and then it smooths out and runs great....is it normal ???? Thanks ,in advance to anyone who will respond....
Thanks a lot. It work for me.
Excellent, glad to hear it!
Hay quick question can I delete all the smart crap on my new Battery charger??? I'd love to cut it all out and throw it all away. Id appreciate and details on that question, Thanks.
The microprocessor controlled smart chargers and the old fashioned linear power supply chargers are significantly different designs so I question the practicality of trying to convert one to another. The only real common issue that I see with modern chargers is that they won't try to charge the battery if the voltage is too low. Best wishes!
@Barry-Watson Thanks for the quick response. Well then I guess I'll keep it a smart charger then. I was hoping you'd say do this and do that and it would be done. But it's OK no worries Thanks again.
If you want a manual battery charger, they are available. I might hunt the used market for an old unit, they're usually pretty simple long lasting designs.
You are awesome, This absolutely worked perfect! Thank you!!
Excellent! Thanks!
I've been working on large industrial HVAC units lately with multiple VFD driven AC or EC motors, actuators on pumps, valves, dampers, etc. Shutting one down is a process, a far cry, though, from a steel plant that can't be restarted once it's turned off, turning off an AHU's mains switch could have catastrophic results at worst. At home it's more about avoiding pops in the speakers. Definitely something to think about and done right it can really help reduce wear on your gear.
I'm repairing one of Penvey 600C mixer but i am not getting 15 Vote it's not on what responsible for it to come on
I believe schematics are easily available. It's a simple linear power supply. If I was to guess, I would start checking the semiconductors like the voltage regulator ICs, or diodes.
Should the battery be disconnected from the car before using a product like this? Or is it OK to leave it connected to the car?
I often charge the battery while it's still in-place attached to the car. For the best results with a pulse repair process, it may be ideal to disconnect the battery from the car.
@Barry-Watson that's what I'm thinking. Safer to just loosen the bolt and disconnect from car.
Great advice, Barry! Never knew these types of units existed.
Glad I could help!
Thank You! Will use it with my AM ham radio audio processing rack. N3SWL
Thanks! Hope that works well for you!
unfortunately O purchased the beta58 as to upgrade from my trusty sm58..and nop..just as u mentioned it doesn't work for me either. I end up using the beta58 as a beta 57, purchased the grill and all for that.
Thanks for sharing
Would you say the beta 57a is a good mic for recording a guitar amp? I have many mics including a 57 but we are going to be against the clock at the studio and would appreciate the opinion of someone more experienced than myself. Thank you
Yes, I've had really good results with it. But, I've also had good results with the SM57 as well.
so beta would be good for tener or alto?
In my opinion there are better sounding mics for vocals than the shure beta 58/57 series. I like the sound on guitar, but for vocals I would choose something else, I think the SM-58/57 is a more natural sounding microphone.
@@Barry-Watson which other models?
What mic sounds great is a really subjective opinion, and you have to listen for yourself to find something that you like. My opinion is that I like the SM58, I think it's balanced and works well for most singers. I also like the SM86 which offers a lot of high end clarity without sounding strange, but is a bit more touchy when it comes to stage feedback. There are lots of good mics, I like a lot of the electrovoice ND series, the AKG D5 and C-5, and I like the Audix OM series. I'm not a big fan of the Sennheiser vocal mics, they seem too crispy to me... but this is just my taste. If you can try some of these mics and make a brief recording, then listen for yourself and choose what makes your vocals sound the way you like. Then again, a decent sound tech should be able to give you excellent results with any of these "pro" level mics. The Shure Beta 58/57 has a honky sounding midrange to me, but they do work for some folks. YMMV and Good luck!
Thank you for a clear explanation of how to clean the cables. I was weary of using WD40 on the plastic coatings, but never considered just removing the oil once the gunk was gone. Genius! Thank you.
Glad I could help! I should have mentioned Goo Gone citrus cleaner can be pretty amazing on tape residue glue. Again, I always wipe the cables down with a moist cloth afterwards to reduce any chemical residue.
Are you hearing any white noise from that Q 16?
I don't recall a lot of background noise. I think this unit works well for its intended purpose, which is for casual sing along parties. If you are a critical listener/audiophile I don't think you'll be content with the sound quality for serious listening because I could clearly hear the digital signal processing.
This video is very very informative. And thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and experience selflessly.
Thanks, I appreciate that.
Thank you! I'm new to your channel. Loved the explanation. Loved your voice...very relaxed! I subscribed. I will be buying this battery charger.
Welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for sharing, Barry. I believe most of us can relate directly to each of the situations you described.
Absolutely!
ive used these for years on overheads and acoustic guitar etc. fantastic mics
Ummm I forgot too say....Thank you!
I appreciate the details and all you put into this video. Good and informational video!
I appreciate that!
Excellent done video!

Worked perfectly cheers, thank you!
Glad it helped!
Respect...is 7 stages a marketing issue?! Dose other intelligent pulse repair charger has it ?!
There are other modern chargers that also offer multi stage charging. It's not just marketing hype, this charger does go through multiple different styles of charging in it's full charge cycle to restore the battery to the best condition possible. I think the NOCO chargers do something similar.
I ran a station in my neighborhood, I hid in a valley where a Mexican radio station was not covering. basically if you were above this valley you would get hit by a big signal. But if you were in the valley where the Mexican station didn't reach I fille the hole.
MKBHD's Autofocus channel uses only a phone. He has RED cameras all around in his studio.
Good info! I have a question I can't find an answer to. I just purchased a digital mixer, Zoom L 12. Can i run the main/monitor outputs from the Zoom to a couple xlr or line input channels on my powered mixer to work as the amp for the Zoom for my passive mains and monitors? Thanks a bunch, in advance!!
Yes, absolutely. Just be mindful of the levels, so if these are line level outputs from the L12 and you're going into a mic channel you'll need to apply the channel pad and/or turn the preamp gain down accordingly on the mixer/amp. Should work fine.
@@Barry-Watson Excellent! Got it. Thank you for the SPEEDY reply. Subbed
Thank you!
I isolated my PC into a single outlet and the noise was significantly lower. I am going to first buy power surges because all my shit was in one power surge.
You don’t even need the special tools, this can be done with paper clips.
I prefer padlocks I can easily pick, inevitably I lose the key or just don’t have it when I need it.
Haha... that's a plan.
High passing the channels that do not have wanted bass content is useful as this also clear up the low end monitor and IEM sends tapped post eq.
