Forest Lawn by Tom Paxton
Tom Paxton probably had tongue firmly in cheek when he contemplated the grandiose funerals of the rich and famous at Forest Lawn cemeteries in Los Angeles.

Of all the protest singers who emerged from the Greenwich Village scene of New York City in the early 1960s, few -then or in retrospective - were as genuine or as committed as Phil Ochs. Ochs may have been in the shadow of another Mid Western boy, but his songs stand up to the comparison and many are as relevant today as when he wrote them. While others sought the hit parade, Ochs stayed true t...

Few songwriters can match Tom Paxton for the sheer breadth of his topical songwriting - covering everything from US presidents splashing at swimming rabbits to the plight of the Vietnamese boat people. 'She Sits On The Table' relates to one of the great unspoken tragedies of our society - violence within the family home. This version (abridged by SplashPix) features Tom with Anne Hills and the ...
Old Folkie - Harry Chapin's tribute to Pete Seeger
มุมมอง 29K17 ปีที่แล้ว
At the age of 88, Pete Seeger's reputation as singer, songwriter and activist is well documented. The singing conscience of a nation for 60 years - even if that nation didn't want to listen - there are few causes that Seeger did not espouse, or sing about. The late Harry Chapin was, like Seeger, New York born and bred. He was not so much a writer of songs, but of short stories set to music. Lik...

    Who the hell is that singing that harmony? It's magic, totally makes the song...

    • @SplashPix
      @SplashPix 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Harmony was by a country/rockabilly singer from Spokane, Washington, called Bobby Wayne. Wayne was one of those singers time has forgotten. Indeed, with better promotion from record companies he might be a bigger name today. The track was from an LP called "Phil Ochs: Greatest Hits". Greatest hits it was not, it was a rather cheeky 10-song disc that I suppose could be called folk rock. Wayne also sang harmony on "Gas Station Women". The whole lot was produced by Van Dyke Parks and is totally unlike a lot of the contemporary/protest songs that Phil was noted for.

      John Denver did cover several Paxton songs, and also opened concerts for him. From secondhandsongs.com ---- The song Forest Lawn was written by Tom Paxton and was first released by Tom Paxton in 1970. It was covered by Tim Grimm and John Denver.

      Andy Moss Partly. And an observation on some of the other artists he liked. He was a big Elvis fan, too, but we all know that everything changed when E.P. switched to RCA and played the chords of fame. Still, Ochs remained a fan. He was always sincere - even his satire was sincere,, and just told younger artists the truth.

    I didn't hear it myself, but a friend informs me that this song was played the other night on Mary Cliff's folk music show on PBS radio, in remembrance of Pete Seeger, just passed. It sounds for all the world like it was written for that very purpose, even though it was years before Pete's passing; but it was probably meant, at the time, for Woody, and all the lights in that great sky, as well as those here who would, and will, one day join them, including Pete. Couple of Tom's songs were among the first I learned when I was taking up guitar in college in the 60's. In music, simplicity is the soul of greatness, beauty, and endurance (I once heard this said of Beethoven), and his songs are some of the greatest, most beautiful, and most enduring.
