A Night Out in Eylau - Bloomchamp's Folly! | The Crusty Colonel
Allegedly, during the night 7th / 8th February 1807, French troops attempted to move the Imperial baggage train into the town of Eylau. They got lost and veered too close to Russian positions.
What followed was a savage fight for the town, with more and more troops being drawn in. There were reportedly 8,000 casualties before the main action on the next day.
And all because QM Bloomchamp took a wrong turn …!

Mohrungen - 25th January 1807 | The Crusty Colonel

It is the 25th January 1807. General Bennigsen attempted to surprise the Grand Armée’s left wing by shifting the bulk of his army to East Prussia. Having cleared Ney's troops out of the way, the Russians advanced towards the isolated Marshal Bernadotte near Mohrungen. When General Markov appeared, Bernadotte immediately advanced northward to engage the enemy. He ordered Dupont to march and atta...

It is the 26th December 1806. Following Napoleon's successful passage of the Ukra, Russian armies had been forced back north toward Golymin and north-east toward Pultusk. VIVE LA LATRINE!
💩💩💩😳
Really enjoyed your naval Battles, just bought some Tumbling dice ships
Good stuff! I think a few ppl have done that. I'll have to get TD to give me a few freebies 🤣🤣🤣
Great looking game, enjoyed it
Merci beaucoup 😊
Flaneur didn’t need to make an Uncontrolled Troops test to attack the jaegers behind the hedge. Uncontrolled Fire only applies to Formations, not to single Groups firing.
Ah, cool, thanks for the tip! 😊
Likewise, Controlled Fire is only available to formations, not individual Groups.
I did not know that! Thanks 😊
Don't know this rules, but I wonder if IRL the skirmisher screens shouldn't retreat behind their parent battalions when attacked
Yes, they should! If this didn't happen, then it was my error 🙃
Excellent
Thank you so much 😀
Great battle and the French really was eager and pushed on. Keeping the initiative and forced the russian to respond and didn't give them any respite.
The French took advantage of their superior quality, pedestrian Russian movement, and poor initial deployment.
Very good game and a great set of rules! Cheers ;)
Many thanks, Rob 😊
The re rolls take a while to get used to, but I think they relate well to the ebb & flow of battle that we read about. Visually spendid, those mass 6mm units really are effective as a birds eye view and the close ups. Well done Crusty! more please!👍
Merci beaucoup 😊
13:26 that's purdy!!
You said, "The rules are fairly detailed, and it takes a lot of getting used to." in a reply to a comment elsewhere here. I'd like to know, and it might be too early to say - so fair enough if so, but is all that detail providing anything of substance (making a better game experience) beyond what, say, 2x2 Napoleonic provides? I am enjoying watching the game, as always, but it feels watching that it's a bit fiddley.
At this early stage of rule use, I'd say yes. There's obviously a lot more detail reflecting the subtleties of troop types, grades, etc, which makes for a more realistic battle. I like the command and control decision-making as well. 2x2 is fun and quick, but it's pretty basic. Combat resolved with one D6 per side and an instant result (often destroyed) is very brutal!
@@CrustyColonel18 thank you Sir your initial insight on 'bang for buck' in regards to rules detail. Much appreciated!
You're welcome 😊
Very nice table and minis - I like the way you keep all the dice rolling in the video and fast forward through the movement. I did notice one rules issue at 16:50, when you fired the skirmishers at the artillery. There was an enemy skirmish unit near the artillery unit, and I think it was supposed to take the first casualty (pg 63).
Many thanks Not sure that example is at 16.50, but your comment is well noted for future games 😊
Great looking table and really enjoyable battle to watch, the Russians looked a little outclassed today but enough lived to fight another day
Many thanks 😊 I do like playing some of these lop-sided battles. It makes it far more interesting than two evenly matched armies lined up across a table. So, yes, the Russians live to fight another day - Eylau is approaching fast!
Very nice ....but not in favour of rerolls, time wasted :( I use a re roll only when an ADC and or a General with but not using GdA.
So, not when you have supporting re-roll units?
Looks great, superb table and great looking battle...haven't played this one yet, but looks interesting!
Many thanks 😊 The rules are fairly detailed, and it takes a lot of getting used to. I'm sure there's still some errors in my playing, but hopefully improving with each game. En avant!
This was a year's worth of good news for us.
😊😊😊
Good show. Thank you.
You're welcome The anniversary of Mohrungen is fast approaching 😊
Lots of interesting stuff to look forward to. Your channel is excellent! Subscriber count well deserved, many more will come. Cheers!
Many thanks, much appreciated! 😊
Best of luck sticking to a plan for 2025! Somehow, i find it very hard to manage anything like that. I am much too easily led astray into new projects .... by people who make great game videos using Fighting Sail, for exsmple😂! Anyway, I am looking foward to your (projected) year ahead's output, esp your 1807, N Africa and the 1066 projects. i remember a group of us recreating Hastings, decades ago, using Dave Millwards Gods Acre rules. The Normans were sent scurrying back to the brunt out wrecks of their ships on the Wessex coast!
I think I'll need it as the plan is a tad ambitious (and the wife may get a little peeved with all my hobby time 😀), but you've got to have a target to aim for
Thank you for everything.
😁
I have ignored your planner as best I could. Clearly a bit of work has gone into it, but I love a surprise! The tanks look great to my eye for the little guys, rumbling forward as one on their lovely little bases!
🤣🤣🤣 I'm sure they'll be plenty of things popping up throughout the year!
Nice, so much to look forward to, your channel is top notch IMHO, keep up the great work.
Glad you enjoy it! I'll try :-)
Hallooo! 1) Do a video on how you made that map! Pleae. 2) For the WW2 North Africa, Peter Pig just released a "2025 PBI". Would love to see that get some love and see how it plays out via one of your great campaign vblog styles! 2a) FiveCore Company Command -or- FiveCore Battalion Commander!!! I'll even gift you the rules on Wargaming Vault if you'd like! 3) Glad to hear that though there might not be campaigns and things, there is still possibility for further 2x2 Napoleonics and other things I have come to watch and love. 4) A request for 2026? I would love to see someone play "Blown Away" - an obscure Napoleonic (but I guess any rank/file era really) 'Skirmish' (?) game that is free. (Obscure meaning it is HARD to find online, but is truly free, meaning it's not a pirated thing. Author just has a webpage in amongst a bunch of other non-gamey pages)
1. No! lol. My skills are not good enough to produce a video of 'how to ...' Wondercraft. There are a lot of very professional uploads already for that, which I looked at before attempting a basic effort like you see. 2. I'll check that out, although it's a grid system I think. And atm I'm not necessarily that keen on that sort of thing. However, never say never! 2a. Is that a Div / Corps level game? 3. Yes, more 2x2 definitely. Now I've got my Russians painted up, if gives me a lot more scope. 4. 2026?! I'll have taken over the world by then ... :-)
@@CrustyColonel18 1) Sad Face 2) Nor am, I but I like this one 2a) BN but feel it scales easily enough, I've done DIV 3) Yay 4) Viva La Revolution!
I first discovered your channel watching the Saxon v Vikings games using Age of Hannibal rules and followed your channel ever since. I think most wargamers are butterflies. For your WW2 desert games can I suggest either Rommel or the newer Eisenhower rules both by Sam Mustafa for big Division and Corps size desert battles. Looking forwards to watching your videos over the coming year.
Many thanks! What do you think of the AoH rules for Dark Ages? I think they work pretty well. I'll check out Sam Mustafa's stuff in some more detail, but having seen some of the videos so far on YT, I'm not sure they're what I'm after for solo.
Absolutely loving your channel! I have no idea what game led me to your channel, but you play a bunch of games I love (Sharp Practice, Dux Britaniarum and Silver Bayonet well really almost everything you play, I enjoy myself it seems). I also just got an order of ships from Tumbling Dice after watching your Fighting Sail games. Seems just the type of beer and pretzels game someone who grew up regularly visiting the USS Constitution would love to play! I look forward to the games you're playing this year and wish you good health and great fun! Thank you!
Great to hear, mon brave! It's fantastic to get such enthusiastic comments. Much appreciated :-)
@ honestly I really enjoy your style and games and the naming puns. Very enjoyable and I look forward to more. My son (too young for his own TH-cam feed) thinks your narrative style Silver Bayonet games are the best. We’ve seen them all about 5 times. We play regularly while your team fights their way along behind us. Keep up the great work!
That's great to hear! I'll do my best to keep the entertainment level high It's the wilds of Canada next ... 😊
I recommend Blitzkrieg Commander for your WW2 Desert campaign. That with a couple of house rules regarding stacking damage and artillery scatter will probably do you fine for an evening's gaming!
Thanks, I'll check it out 😊
I came for the silver bayonet, and stayed for the puns...But seriously, I think your butterflying is actually a nice feature and not a bug. You have exposed me (us???) to many other eras, campaigns, rule sets and miniatures I wouldn't normally consider and now I have to exert great mental discipline not to follow you down that rabbit hole and remain focused on my own niche. Thank you and I look forward to seeing new content.
Lovely jubbly. 😍 I do try to showcase lesser-known rules / periods / theatres etc
For the WW2 project, Rommel, Blitzkrieg Commander or Fistful of TOWs 3 could do.
Cheers! I'll take a look 😊
Great presentation, thank you. Even with my fairly quick deterring health I'm still able to watch your programs. Thank you for making me happy.
Mon plaisir, mon brave!
Nice catch up video and some great games to look forward to in the future, keep up the good work 👍
Much appreciated, will do!
Looking forward to everything you're planning for this year.
Great stuff!
Nothing wrong with being a butterfly, it’s a hobby so should never become a chore. For my money, your’s is one of the best channels around. A great combination of good research, good game systems and regular output.
Fantastic! Thanks for the support and kind words. Butterfly-tastic!
The trailing French ship should have been named the Escargot!😂 I recently ran across your channel - subscribed and looking forward to more salty adventures!! I really like the ruleset, except that the wear maneuver seems such an abrupt one, especially for first rate ships!
Welcome aboard! Thanks for the sub. Yes, that Frenchie was rather tardy wasn't he?
What a terrific report! And an interesting ruleset.
Many thanks 😊 I stumbled on them by accident, but think they're pretty good. Not too complex for me!
They certainly are quick play. Great game. The Admirals names... LOL!
Cheers. As usual, they make me smile 😊
Most excellent
😊😊😊
The dice gods were not kind to Nippon's ships this time. Better fortune next encounter....
Yes, they were rubbish, weren't they?
