    What a nice painting, I like that I can see through the waterfall to the rock facing behind it. A small detail like that really elevates a painting to another level. I did a similar painting years ago when I was just learning the process and with yours as a guide I might revisit it and try my hand at it again. Thanks for another cool lesson Stephen.

    While seascapes are as you know not my preferred type of painting it's still pretty amazing watching your painting come together from that blank canvas to the waves crashing on the rocky shore. The illuminated area of the wave really captures what I have seen on my very rare visits to a beach. The power and the beauty of the ocean and your growth as an artist all comes together by the end of the video. As always, I come away with some artistic knowledge from the whole process. Just totally well done.

    I have to say that you talk too much in this video, which is distracting from your good work and instruction. As for your religious declaration on your page, you are obviously one of those people who have a Greek view of an ethereal paradise far away. Haven't you heard? When Christ returns, He is bringing a new heaven and a new earth. The New Testament Christian view is that the life of heaven is coming to us!

      Hello Curt, thank you so much for the compliment sir! I really appreciate that. As to your statement about heaven, I'm not familiar with what you mean by "Greek view". While we could discuss this interesting topic in detail, I'd prefer to keep it simple for those looking on who are not believers in Jesus. John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son (Jesus), that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life." Giving your life to Jesus is the ONLY way to make it and live forever with Him!

    I'm a painter (artist I guess, lol), quite successful over a few decades, and was fortunate enough to study privately with some very famous artists when I was beginning to paint 'professionally'. The first artist I studied with, Robert Lougheed, was a very renowned landscape and wildlife painter, after originally being an illustrator. What he taught me was 'exactly' the things... all of them... that you are demonstrating in this video. Aspiring artists take note; this video is spot on correct! Well done, lovely painting, and thanks for sharing!

    I love how you state that you can paint oil over acrylic and not vise versa... the conventional thinking states that all the time, but if you cannot do one, then the other is not true either. The caveat is that both are possible, but at some loss of longevity for each. Confidently stating the generic conventional wisdom shows you have a lack of experience with either medium, limited to your own findings and use of both acrylics and oils. What is less known about painting over acrylics is that acrylic has the same caveats as oils do, but within a far shorter amount of time. Acrylic expires out the water and cures within itself, and this exchange happens in about 48-72 hours, depending on thickness, and type of acrylic. If you paint upon acrylic using oil within that time, you introduce things into your oil layers which are bad for the oil film, and can lead to delamination in about 50-60 years out. You can navigate between oils and acrylics, but doing so requires letting the oil rest for a period long enough for it to reach "hard set" not just "cured", a point where the oil paint will not retract or change for the majority of its lifespan. Most linseed oils reach this state after about one year, which is more than most artists are willing to wait. There are way to get around this however, but it usually results in micro cracking after about 5 or more years.

    • @windowstoheavenart994
      @windowstoheavenart994 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Very good to know! Thanks for the information, very well learned sir. Here is an example question for you. Let's say there was a painting that had a layer of oil paint that dried for a year, then had acrylic added on, then another layer of oil over that directly after? What would a professional art restorer do to recover the work (if that's even possible)? Can one seal it all together somehow maybe by varnish to avoid delamination? Would love to know your thoughts!

    • @chrisgriffith1573
      @chrisgriffith1573 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@windowstoheavenart994 Not much anyone can do for the the mix. Getting acrylic over oil isn't easy- first you sand the oil with 600 or higher grit sandpaper or steel wool. Then wipe a thin layer of acrylic medium into the oil, until it sticks, overcoming the hydrophobic state of the oil layer. Then you can paint with acrylic. Going back to oil might be troublesome in other ways, acrylic paint has very little tooth, so the oil does not adhere very well if the acrylic isn't matte, or have a rough surface. As soon as the oil dries it will stick as long as it is undisturbed, and the vacuum pressure holds. Once a crack is introduced, the oil can chip off. The more texture, the better the oil will hold.

      Great question Cheryl. Of course, it's all dependent on what mediums you are using, and how much paint you put on for each session, but for me, with only linseed oil as my medium, and applying thin layers of paint, I'm usually ready to go around 24 hours. Absolutely!

    I agree with you about colour mixing. I work in watercolour and acrylic and now new to oils. I'm teaching myself mostly by painting every day and learning by trial and error. ❤ Interesting process. I like the idea of using digital tools to help you create. Anyone who can paint water blows my mind. Even as you paint, I can't figure out how you can "see" what the result will be. I am usually pretty good at working out an image in my head but water is my nemisis every time. 😂

    • @windowstoheavenart994
      @windowstoheavenart994 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I hear you, water is very tricky. I wasn't good at waves AT ALL when I started, but I actually would watch other artists on TH-cam as well painting ocean waves etc. and that is how I learned. The more you know what you like, the more you start to notice what you don't like. As far as "seeing" it before you paint it, I can usually only see one step ahead of the one I'm on (like, "oh, that kinda looks like it could be this way...do I like it though?")...You'll get the hang of it! Thanks for the comment 🙂
