We discussed the idea of Improvology, a term from Jimmy Slyde that I learned in a tap dance class, as we workshopped this Dean Collins' Break, then workshopped it some more, then deconstructed it, then danced it as freely as possible.

The African-American Roots of the Charleston Dance
มุมมอง 9K4 ปีที่แล้ว
In the 1920s African-American dancers like Broadway choreographer Elida Webb and musicians like James P. Johnson launched the Charleston to a national level. Yet before this electrifying moment on stage, the roots of these dance traditions from South Carolina, especially amongst the Geechee or Gullah people of the Sea Islands, were actively practiced. So if you enjoy the Charleston, remember an...

To be more precise the Charleston comes from African-American martial arts called knocking and kicking that's practiced by the Gullah Geechee people. It's similar to capoeira look at the foot movement in the Charleston and capoeira and in modern-day breakdancing, and they all have a common thread that leads back to Angola, and the mother martial arts is Engolo
Looking very handsome 😍 with the beard and love ❤️ the fancy pants 👖
❤❤
Great that I found the original here. I know this tune from Tuba Skinny. And I was so interested how tge original would sounded. Many thanks for finding and sharing here.
Those were some good times
The lil demo! They still got it! Love this
Sweet!
Their style is so unique!!!
Thanks for doing the interview. Great stuff.
Was this in the late 80s? I can’t see who the band is. “Isn’t that smooth”
The crease in those pants! :D
And Eva has on her heels as she said in the other vid. Asphalt oh gosh yeah ugh. This is super you captured this!
"Just going through the motions" :)
Thanks so much Christian! 🙏
Wonderful video. Very concise. I don’t know much about the history of dance, but I know African descended people in the US invented a lot of them that were then adopted and appropriated widely. I recently saw a video of a woman doing the Charleston and just from the movements and energy of it, and of course the name, I realized it must’ve been one of those. I love seeing Josephine Baker do it - the absolute firecracker of energy she was! Amazing. Thanks for putting sources and telling the story of how this came about. So fascinating!
The Madison was one of those dances
Elmer Ming in the top left corner is grandfather, I am just hearing the band music, and it sounds timeless💕🙇🏾♂️
Hi Nate, I would love to talk to you, is there a way I could reach out to you!
This is incredible! Awesome moves Christian! The ending from 3:18 onwards is so sick! And bro, where’d you get that halogen lamp in your living room? That thing gives off some good lighting! What is that like 120 watts?
A great clean copy!
Make my day......Thx
Recognize that park!! Sweet dance/edit
great editing!
Christian is such a legend!
Even though it's old, it's still a beautiful steamship!
Great history lesson, but the photograph of the woman indicated to be Elida Webb is inaccurate - Elida Webb is my great aunt, my grandmother's sister, my mother's aunt, and that is not her. I have photographs of my aunt in her later years, as well as during her heyday as the main Choreographer for the Cotton Club. She choreographed multiple Broadway productions, Shuffle Along being one. The beautiful woman who is featured in this video deserves the proper acknowledgement, and hopefully someone will see this and identify her correctly.
I hope they update the video! That is amazing that you have that connection! It’s a fascinating story.
I would like to rectify this. Is there a way I can get in touch with you?
@@gethotkeepmovin I think you replied directly to me, rather than @Bxlioness who is the relative! So she probably didn't see your message. Just FYI. :)
Hi @bxlioness I would love to rectify this. Is there a way I can get in touch with you to help make the video more accurate?
@@barbiedesoto7054 thank you!
Im Italian, I was watching a white girl dancing Charleston super well, and I noticed her legs movements were like traditional African dances from Uganda, so I started looking up Charleston' history Besides, jazz' history is also black so I thought probably Charleston is
Included some Latin rhythms!
This is so typical of the self-proclaimed swing dance elite: dance moves that didn't exist at the time, and don't fit the music. But hey, we're amazing dancers and can do whatever we want. Dancers first, music second. Surprised there's no Millennial or Gen Z male piece of shit in this vid wearing clip-on suspenders. Fuck exchanges.
Dirty blues??
❤️❤️❤️❤️
The precision!
My word that is some super slidy footwork. Merry Swingmas Christian!
shocking!
Great group from Italy!
Yas, Yas, Yas ....thanks for the post !
2021!! 100 years later . So much has changed 🇺🇸
That step is grand! With both patterns together. :)
Was there anyone else even close to Scott Joplin?
Lovely playing from a lovely Lady
My Nani used to sing this song to me!
Are you from St. Louis by chance?
Such a good time..we was a swingin’!! Thanks for posting. and Kelly🎷 and Brian🎺 wow🎶
Well done!
I’m not surprised! I noticed during he last 100 years or so that white music takes and transforms black music into something more palatable for them. Same thing with dance moves. I recommend looking into other decades; it’s really interesting :)
Yep

I have to say, I've never heard people scream like fangirls to jazz since I was born literally 100 years too late. Well, until now...
Nice! This makes sense! Apparently the Big Apple came from South Carolina too.
Yes, the Big Apple Club, a Black nightclub in Columbia, South Carolina. The building still stands.
You're so awesome!!
Very good
Excellent 👍🏽👍🏽
Excellent my friend! Great memories of watching you all at so many of the events with the many bands that I have been fortunate to perform with. You always light a place up for sure! And yes I do study the moves and dance about on my hardwood floors ha ha 👞
I miss seeing and hearing you, Lew! Hope you're doing well.
