Portraits of Connection - Marion - The Stranger Effect
In the sixth episode of the Portraits of Connection mini-documentary series, we meet Marion, a remarkable woman whose journey as a medical doctor began with the kind words of a stranger. Decades ago, Marion froze during her first medical exam interview, overwhelmed with self-doubt. But a chance encounter with a stranger changed everything. With a simple affirmation-"You're clever, ain't ya? Why wouldn't they want ya?" on the way to an interview at another medical school, Marion found the confidence to shine her brightest. She passed, embarking on a lifelong career in medicine, and has been making a difference in the lives of others for over 60 years. This heartwarming story reminds us of the power of connection, encouragement, and how small gestures can ripple through a lifetime. Thank you for sharing your story Marion.

Please don't. I have shut myself off from most of society because it sends me into panic attacks when strangers talk to me. It's easier to be alone than live through that. It hurts some of us.

Some of us don't want to be talked to. I'm sure you think you are being kind but strangers talking to me sends me into panic attacks. This is why I don't leave my house. Please don't do this to everyone.

Hey @muhcherns, we are happy to hear what you have found what makes you happy. Loneliness is subjective. Some need more connection, some need less. As long as you have what you need, then this message may not be for you. The research that has been done in various locations has not been specific to introverts or extroverts, thus we are sure that there were some of both in the samples, but again, everyone is on their own journey, so take our message the way it helps you most. @@genwellproject It was even better, because he has to pay for the time of who brings him places (he can't see well, uses a red-stripe cane, and can't drive). He didn't think twice of doubling the time that he's with him, and even bought me coffee!

we need someone to start a match up programme between seniors and younger people. I used to be Candy Striper at the Oakville Hospital and my favourite part was talking and reading to these seniors on the Long term care floor. they simply loved having a younger person to sit and chat with them.
