When doing my captures, I noticed the captures have a little more low end and there's something a bit different in maybe the upper mids or treble. Still love it though
Interesting. I thought it was just an imperfection in my capture but maybe it’s just part of the process
Spot on bro..👍
Thank you!
Sounds great 😊
Cheers!
Finally, a good demo of this pickup
Glad you enjoyed it! Make sure you subscribe for more!
Great walk through! I’m glad the irs are tweak-able as there’s no eq or high/low cut other than the tone stack for captures on here.
I’m glad you enjoyed it! Make sure you subscribe for more!
Putting the drum mics in there was a masterstroke. Great video.
Thanks!
H Ed, compliment to your video! to your question what was the amp and what was the nano cortex I got it right. Nr. 2 sounded rounder and Nr. 1 the nano cortex missed the "tube amp compression". I had the advantage that I have a really good Steavens 4 ch tube amp had with a mesa recto cab and also a nano cortex. So I could hear what was what. I know the sound of my Steavens with the mesa 4 x 12 cab miced by my sennheiser e 609 and I have captures of Steavens poundcake amps ( I haave still to make my own captures) on the nano cortex that sounds and feel close to my amp. The "response feel" while playing guitar is so close to my Steavens amp that is really fun to play. On a silent stage with in ear monitoring I would be happy to play the nano cortex with captures of my own setup. No need to use my Steavens tube amp head with a two notes captor x in "silent mode". That is the new world! I have to say this, although I have a 78 Vox ac 30 reverb and a music man 110 RD 50 combo. I had also an acoustic model 165 guitar combo ( good sounding mesa boogie MK II "copy"). So I know the feel and the sound of a good sound guitar tube amp . All in all the nano cortex sounds really good and more amp like than my boss gt 1000 core especially in the distortion sounds! And I like the concept very much. The delay and the reverb sounds really good. I can´t understand the whole criticism. The nano cortex is made for live use on stage with a pedalboard and as an amp substitute in this context.
Why mono output ? Any specific reason?
It has stereo outputs but I only run a mono rig so I tend to test products in mono so I can compare it more fairly to other things I’ve used
Why doesn't it have an overdrive effect as a pre effect included? Don't understand this. Other modeling software supports this.
It’s a fair question. I guess because you can include an overdrive in a capture or use an overdriven capture. I can only assume it was to reduce the footprint or the cost or both!
i need some guitar lessons from you
You’re very kind. I am doing occasional tutorial videos is the “learn that lick” series that I just started so make sure you’re subscribed to see those!
@@edtheshredclarke Will do. I really like the way you play. I was never that good but would love to learn some new stuff
Thanks! There’s one up already and more to come!
I play a UAFX dream 65 live with delays and verb after it! With trs cable can I do the same with nano cortex?
Yep! And it can do the verb and delay for you if you’d like!
@@edtheshredclarke I know but limited to analog delay, I use polymoon! Can I put that after it?
You can! Need to use normal instrument cables. I’ve been told that the ground lift fixes the noise issue
i had the same issue about the noise with a guitar cable but with the ground switch on the back, the noise immediately stoped ...
Ah maybe that’s the solution! Cheers!
That's a serious piece of kit! Definitely interested and the app looks ridiculously easy. How does it hold up to the Victory V4? I would guess that woukd sound consistent as an in ear feed since it's the V40 in a pedal?
It’s a different kind of thing to the V4. The V4 is hybrid as it is a truly valve preamp combined with IR tech. The cortex is fully digital and allows you to “capture” amps. Theoretically infinite options but the eq is an approximation of how and amp would respond whereas the V4 is a real amp eq…….hope that made sense 😂
@@edtheshredclarke yep totally. I was just wondering why you would use this over the V4 for in ears when you want it to sound like the V40. Or is the V4 also part of the live rig in a different application?
It’s for the tweakability I guess. Just so I can get the in ear sound right as I’m so picky!
@@edtheshredclarke haha! I totally get it. The tone quest never ends!
@@edtheshredclarkeI went Two Notes Cab M for FOH and IEM, so I still get to use my amps and cab onstage. Consistent every gig.
Hm. I wonder if what you're hearing whilst recording is different than the audio coming through to us... nothing sounded particularly thin to me, and it didn't even seem to change that much when you increased the bass on the onboard EQ... Perhaps it's just my listening setup? (listening on Sennheiser Momentum 4s). Anyone else noticing that? Thanks for the run-through - excellent display of what this little pedal is capable of (and fantastic playing to boot!)
Cheers! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I was thinking exactly the same when I edited it! I have a couple of ideas: 1) there is an inherent difference when you’re playing a pedal as it’s not just about the sound, it’s also the response and feel. 2) it was just down to where I was sitting at the time! Make sure you subscribe for more!
Sounds good. I like it.
CA stand is probably a California standard (Mesa 4x12?)
Ah yeah maybe! Cheers!
stack them up!
You have a nice technique mate, its aggresive yet soulful..
And yeah bought a strat, thinkin about gettin one of those 59's then you have the swiss knife of guitars...
Cheers!
Why is there a black brown green protein? Is there any difference other than the color?
As I understand it they are all identical internally, just a styling thing!
That really sounds great! I'm still getting to grips with BB style pedals and I'm really liking them as a kind of low gain drive. Like just breaking up low gain. Does that Mayer thing for me and stacks nicely too. Origin make amazing pedals! I gave the Cali76 on my board nearly 10 years I think. Absolutely love it! The big Revival Drive was on my radar at one point too. Great demo Ed!
Cheers man! Yeah I’d love to try a revival drive
Curious question because I’m struggling to figure out my drive set up. Would this be an ideal pedal for rhythm overdrive ? I do have the gold but I’m thinking that’s more for leads?
It depends what you’re going for. Personally, I have a high gain and a low/mid gain before it. Then I have 2 gain options and a third by stacking them together l. Hope that helps!
Great demo. BBs are often placed early in the signal chain, but it's interesting to see what happens when you stack the Halcyon BBs.
Cheers! It’s the Halcyon Gold I’m planning on stacking it with. 2 BBs would probably sound cool though!
@@edtheshredclarke That's a nice idea. Mid hit on the Halcyon BB. I dig your channel. Have a great day.
Thanks! Make sure you subscribe for more!
I've been a fan of Will Wilde for a long time. and of course after this clip, you were also a great discovery for me
Thank you!
Play the exact same thing with a different pick up and A, B it ,
Yes!!! Absolutely incredible stuff lads. Tasty and great feel too. Nice one!
Thank you!
Cool idea! And great playing from both!
Cheers!

Thank you
They were all top notch!! Loved the slide solo myself. But that's not taking anything away from the rest of the lads. Great playing all around.
On the volume level, lots of people like to use an overdrive to push the front end of a tube amp. This gives a whole other tonal palette to play with that modeling amps really don't capture. I use my OCD and Tubescreamer into my vintage Marshall, turning up the output of the pedal really interact with the preamp tubes. Especially if I have the amp set slightly dirty, pushing the preamp really brings out some amazing breakup. Especially with the TS, you can set the gain really low, and basically just use it as a boost pedal.
I totally agree. I just think the amount of volume on tap here is a lot! Perhaps you’re right tho, that may have been the reasoning
JC Custom Pickups are top notch! Only guy I deal with.
Thanks for asking me 🎸👍
Thanks for a fine review. Seymour Duncan definitely got the name right. And your skills bring out the best of this set. I was looking at the Quarter Pounder but my tech advisor at Sweetwater said I might want to take a look at this set. Glad I did. These are like the Swiss Army knife of pickups.
Cheers! Yeah it’s the best addition to a strat in my view!
I have both of them. But my BB is 3rd gen. I had chance for try BB, same like this video in Fender amp. It becomes dirty after 3 o'clock. I didn't have chance try BD-2 much more. I have it since 8 years, but I was inexperienced when I bought it. I had a little chance for BD-2 fender and vox all tube amp in last year, but i can not say i like it. When I have chance I will try too BB into BD-2 with my Vox amp and Fender amp. Thanks, it was very useful video.
Thanks! Have you tried any of the modded BD-2s?
@@edtheshredclarke Unfotunately, I did not. I’m living in Turkey, so no chance for find many thing. Also, I’m ship captain. For this reason all my staff what I have, I bought in Europe when I visit EU Ports.
Love it! I'm putting it to work immediately. Thanks Ed 🤘
Great lead tone! Any chance you could share the delay settings too?
It’s the Line6 Helix Transistor Tape with 376ms, feedback at 40%, wow flutter at 3.6, mix at 29%. Glad you liked the video!
NICE playing and demo Bro, thanks and ROCK ON........!!!!!!
Thanks! Make sure you sub for more!
You can raise the tone of the BB a bit more.
What's the track you were playing on?
It’s Break Me by my band Brave Rival: open.spotify.com/track/3cRWto0Pv5XtpQN5Ugda2i?si=i6IitbfuRA2tFLxljqA-0A&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A4Ba1ejC3poNiDFPMBCZwy8
The modification was an accident rather than deliberate.
Great Review ! One of the best and honest. Thanks and best regards from France 🇫🇷
Thank you very much!
I really like dual overdrives. I have a Duellist which is absolutely ridiculous. Love stacking the TS side into other drives and the bluesbreaker side is really growing on me. The Mad Professor Supreme is also another incredible pedal too. I've never tried a preamp pedal or D style. I know the Zen drive is supposed to be very good. Great video Ed 🤘
Cheers! Yeah I have a bit of an addiction to overdrives!
@@edtheshredclarkeme too but I'm ok with that 😂
That sounds really really good! I've been considering getting one as a backup and also for gigs where the "stage" is absolutely tiny and I could go ampless. Might also be a cool option for a stereo setup direct to the PA. Have you used it live yet?
Yeah I’ve used it alongside the V40!
@@edtheshredclarke very cool! Did you go direct or into it's own cab?
Just started playing around with D style and nearly went for the Dude but went for the Wampler Euphoria …great sounding and really versatile and really worth watching Brian (Wampler)’svideo on how to use it. Use it into a Fredrick effects Blue Admiral ( Blues Breaker type) but has a treble boost. Using a Mythos Mjolner into either of this pedals is great fun too.
Also a great pedal I considered! Brian’s video is really good too
I’ve tried em all!!! OCD is hands down the best!!
3:22 How can you test/review a pedal plugged into a modeller? Are you imagining that it is going to react like the front end of a real tube amp? Sorry, you failed and i must disregard your opinions.
Thats an understandable thought, your opinion is totally valid. I actually used the OCD with amps and modellers to form my opinions. The modeller is just easier for the demo. In todays world the behaviour into a modeller is just as relevant as into a tube amp in my opinion. Thanks for watching the video none the less.
What's the blue pedal?? And is the PJD guitar the latest addition? It's a beast!
It’s a Mooer Blues Mood. Essentially a BD-2 Keeley Mod. Yes that’s my new PJD Custom Shop Carey Elite. More to come on that…..
@@edtheshredclarke awesome! Looking forward to seeing more of it.
Thanks this demo has pulled me a bit closer toward swiping the debit card through the copper sound payment portal
It’s a cool pedal!
@@edtheshredclarke yea I am stuck between the strategy 2 or the kingpin, have you played both?
@@keithfranklin7489 I'm afraid I've never played the Strategy. Only criticisim I have of the Kingpin having gigged it since doing this video is that it has quite a high noise floor. I would suggest playing both in a store if you can
The best upgrade is to buy a Telecaster.
😂😂 I disagree but well played!
Awesome shred ❤🎸🎸🎸
Thank you!
They really can’t make 12o’clock unity gain matching the bypass signal because every guitar has a different volume. If 12o’clock matches your Strat volume when the pedal is bypassed, it’ll be too low to match a Les Paul’s natural volume. Likewise, calibrating it to match unity with a LP means it’ll be too loud to match the Strat.
That’s a good point! I’m not sure it’s the entire explanation though because the 12 o clock volume is so loud that you’d need crazy output pickups to reach it
You are not making sense. Unity gain is the gain of the device between bypass and activated and has nothing to do with the strength of your pickups: a les paul at unity gain should be the same as it's bypassed level... thats what it means by definition.
@@rockdanger different kinds of pickups have different outputs levels. So the bypass signal of a LP will be louder than the bypass signal of a Strat. Therefore finding unity gain will require different effect volumes for different guitars.
I would warn people that the tones are highly dependent on the version you pick up. I have picked up one in Candy Apple Red (v2?) that I never got along with. Solid it and bought one that was voiced to match the original before Mike closed shop and changed operations. KILLS. Will never leave the board!!
Yeah it’s a valid point. They do sound different. I guess the v2 didn’t suit your amp maybe!
