Philip II of Macedon's First Victory - Battle of Methone | 359 BC |
Philip II of Macedon is a king generally overshadowed by his son, Alexander the Great.
Though Alexander would owe much of his success to his father, who would use shrewd diplomacy and masterful military reforms, to win a series of battles that would catapult the once Greek backwater into ruler of the known world.

My family has a house in methone by the water at night time the mosquito's come out in full force, And go to town on you

Btw, Methone today is a touristic spot with great seafood
Excellent, commendable work. I do have one objection though: the repeated mention of "Macedonia" and "the Greeks", in a way that it might sound as if Macedonia and "Greece" where two different entities. The fact is, that there was no unified Greece at the time, the race of the Hellenes consisted of a plentitude of independent City States, sharing a common Ethnicity, language, worshiping the same Gods etc. The fact that they were fighting amongst them, creating alliances etc., was a historical truth, but that was how things were at the time. Philip's greatest achievement in my view was to unite all these City States one way or another and thus form the so called "Hellenic League", under the commandership of the City State of Macedonia (the militarily strongest Hellenic City State at the time), the main objective being, through the concept of synergy (1+1=3), to deal with the Persian threat once and for all. His son Alexander went on to achieve this goal and spread the Hellenic civilization to the then known World.
Thanks for your comment! I'm sorry if you got the impression that I was trying to unify the southern Greeks into a singular entity. My intention was to compare the different situations that each were faced with. As the southern Greek city states had many similarities to each other; Military Tactics, Religion, Geography. While the Macedonian Greeks had vastly different Geography and were surrounded on 3/4 of there sides by "Barbarians". The Macedonians also used vastly different military tactics not adopting the Phalanx until under the reign of Philip II. But you are right, after rereading my script I can see how someone could easily get the impression I was referring to them as a more unified entity, I will be sure to pay more attention to this in the future, thank you.
@kingdomofhistory1 Thank you for your truly learned response. And for not having taken my observation, which was written in good faith, as a criticism for the whole truly excellent work. Best wishes for the New Year!
IMO the notable book “By the spear. Philip II, Alexander the Great, and the rise and fall of the Macedonian empire”, (Oxford University Press) by prominent Scholar Ian Worthington, is the best study over the legacy of the Ancient Greek Kingdom of Macedonia.
A list with some notable history books by credible Historians, regarding the legacy of the Ancient Greek Kingdom of Macedonia; “Alexander the Great. Man and God”, Pearson, Harlow 2004, by Ian Worthington. “The Miracle that was Macedonia” by N. G. L. Hammond. “By the spear. Philip II, Alexander the Great, and the rise and fall of the Macedonian empire”, Oxford University Press by Ian Worthington. “The Rise of the Greeks” by Michael Grant. “Alexander of Macedon, 356-323 B.C.: A Historical Biography” by Peter Green. A historical and academic treasure.
Excellent work. Perhaps a little more attention on your narration style.
Thanks, I'll work on it
Well done man , a very good video with great editing as well .but if I would give you a piece of advice i would say you should focus on the forgetten battles and generals

@kingdomofhistory1 He was asked by the dardanians to lead them, he was the king of enchalei-dessareti, prior to war with macedon he had subdued all greeks up to Aetolia

Thank you for the great video. What is the name of the music? 8:35
It’s called Agent by Ben Hayden, it’s available for free on filmstro.
Phillip was a political hostage,he didn't escape from any kind of captivity he simply returned to Macedonia
My main source for this comes from Diodorus Siculus' Library of History. When he recounts the events he states, "Philip his brother, who had escaped from his detention as a hostage, succeeded to the kingdom." this can be found at the end of 2.4.
Finally someone is really covering Philip
Yes please for god love please make this a series. I always love Philiph more than Alexander. Always wonder how Alexander got the "great" while philiph didnt. More people need to know who the true "great" was. Subscribe.
I will most definitely be making this a series, I plan on it being a 4 part covering all his major battles.
This is one of the greatest history videos I have seen on youtube
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good video man you deserve much more attention.
Philip II is truly a great man, easily on the level of Alexander for what he had to compete with and what he achieved.
I would say Philip was just as capable if not more than his son. Alexander was at the head of an army that Phillip trained and built. Phillip made it possible for Alexander to be the Great.
@kaiza9184 Agreed, however I don't think if Philip invaded Persia instead of Alexander he would be as bold, he would have taken a peace to consolidate his holdings and definitely would have taken the marriage. Just my thoughts however, would have been a more stable empire
@@kaisertog7685 You’re right about that. Phillip was very patient and calculated. I don’t think he would have invaded Persia. If he did he I also believe it would have been very stable under his leadership. The world might have been a little different if Phillip was never assassinated. 😬
Amazing quality, love it all! great work!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen this battle covered before. For a matter of fact I don’t think I’ve seen Philip II covered much at all except for the battle of cheorenea.
I feel Alexander is so focused on. People generally forget about Philip.
And then the goths caused absolute chaos in the Roman Empire especially the east
The Huns set of a massive chain reaction by there conquests.
GREAT WORK! I was wondering How can i reach out to you?
I just responded to your email, I apologize.
Great channel. Definitely enjoy the old history more than anything. Don't like to say ancient because 2000+ years in the grand scope of things is not that much. Demetrios would probably be on his way to be top dog in the Diadochi arena if he had at least one ally.
Glad you enjoyed it! I think the same for his father Antigonus, They both were constantly fighting coalitions.
Men think of Rome The Strongest think of Alexander

You deserve this comment
Good video. But not a good idea to rip custom textures from other creators. It's only a matter of time before they notice.
Thanks for your comment. Can you let me know which texture you’re referencing? As far as I know all my textures I have either made or have come from free online sources.
I am also a creator and want to make maps like you, can you guide me. Looking forward.for your response
I make all my maps in Photoshop, but there are plenty of other good free alternatives if you don't want to pay for it. For my political maps I use an Esri Shaded Relief map which is free online to get the physical features. Then I color the terrain, mountains brown, Grass green, Deserts a lighter brown. Then I add my political borders or cities and names. For my battle maps I have a few texture I can use for the ground and then most of the assets I have built myself. However if you are looking to make battle maps quickly I would suggest Inkarnate I personally don't use it but it is a free website and can get you pretty good results quickly. For Political maps I would suggest using a program like Qgis which is free (I personally use) to get base maps, you can then export them into your video editing software to add your animations. If you have any more questions please feel free to ask.
