On Feb 1, 1964, I Want to Hold Your Hand hit #1 on the American radio charts, 8 days before the Beatles first performed live on Americas top Sunday Night TV program, The Ed Sullivan Show. 73 million Americans tuned in. I was nearly 5 years old and watched the Beatles (with my 2 hysterical older sisters and unimpressed father and older brother. My mom was too exhausted to care :-) It is impossible to overstate the impact I Want to Hold Your Hand had on the American public. Hi! Liked your reaction. It has been nearly 54 years since her death -- which still stings -- and people are still talking about her. This song was released on "Pearl", Janis's fourth album, which came out posthumously. It went quadruple platinum -- as a one-hit wonder, that is quite impressive. Her voice is unforgettable, and her wild musical expression has never been equaled. She is not easy listening, because she tears your guts out. The song is a bit different than most of her other repertoire. It is an understated, folk-country ballad, but most of her work was straight blues. Part of why it hurts so much to listen to it, is that shows another direction she could have gone, that we never got a chance to hear more of. There are the four studio albums, the live releases, and the bootlegs. I love her early recordings when she was singing the San Francisco clubs with Big Brother and the Holding Company. Check out her version of the Gershwin classic "Summertime." It is definitive.

One hit wonder? No, that is not the case. She is an ICON. She just died very young, so we can no longer hear from her. She played Woodstock in '69, and was pretty much adored by the fans! If you like, I can provide you with a list of hits she had while she lived...but she was huge in her time, and still is with those that still pay attention to the older music, which is far better than anything you'll hear from new artists.

Thank you so much for reacting to this. I was in high school when this song first came out in 1979. I remember it well. My girlfriend at the time and I loved attending concerts. It was one of the things we loved doing together. There were a huge number of wonderful groups at the time and concerts were not very expensive to attend. Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Boston, Journey, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Triumph, 38 Special, Foreigner, and many others. I cannot describe to you what a wonderful time it was to be young then. We were happier, relationships were closer, life was more carefree, and the music was spectacular. Our 4 adult children (28-33) love 70’s/80’s music just as we do. My heart just aches that young people will not get to experience life as we did as teenagers in the 70’s/80’s. Again, thank you so much for posting this video. It was a wonderful treat.

The honest truth is that the Beatles have so many great songs that you could probably react to a different song everyday for a year or more. They have so many greats songs that it is hard to remember every one. Their music runs from genius down as far as almost genius.
