Noticed you have a different torque approach for the head bolts. Have you experienced any issues going away from the Subaru guidance?
@@robertf4572 This was Actually Taught to me buy one of the best head mechanics in my state for subaru’s and i have never had any customers come back for head gaskets except if they blew a radiator or hose and drove it till it shut down but then they needed a engine cause everything warped beyond repair.
is the purpose of gradually torquing bolts to just seat the head 1st then to get a final torque where the head is bolted to the block with maximum clamping force?
Even Force and to keep head bolts cool so you can get a even torque and yes on all 🙂
Those are for yesteryear 😂😂
@@jonnysanchez3833 Just call me Old
I have a 1/4”, 3/8”, and 1/2” collecting dust in my tool box
@@deanjet I only got this 1/2” and only gets used for head bolts 🙂
It is called a speed handle.
sure is just had to do a tool check🙂
This is a Brace, commonly mated with a Bit making a Bit and Brace. When I think Speed Wrench, I’m looking at a ratcheting box wrench
whoops
Yes, a Brace has a chuck on it, but a speed handle has a square drive on it per the size sockets used. Thank goodness for power drills.
Hi Matthew, Sorry to bug you here, I would love to hear your expert Subaru insight for a used Forester that I am looking at. If there is a better place to reach out to you for this chat, please let me know. Here's the summary of the Forester for sale: - 2010 Subaru forester 2.5XT Limited Sport Utility 4D - Mileage: 128k miles - 2 owners - Most records kept - No Oil/Fluid Leaking - Consumed only Premium Gas - Exterior damage from hail (resulted in total loss, salvage title) - New Tires with 1k miles - Timing Belt replaced at 98k miles - Valve Gaskets replaced at 118k miles - Head Gaskets not replaced (seller shared Turbo model does not have HG issues) This is all the info I've gathered through text only. I'd love to hear your thoughts and any stand out items I should look out for (or ask) when I inspect + test drive the car. Thank you for taking the time to read this. - Blake
@@blakeXYZ Check subframe front and back for rust. Be prepared to replace turbo and i recommend replacing oil every 3000 miles because of turbo. If it automatic change fluid and filter if it spin on external filter and if it don’t have it just change fluid and not flush and be prepared for wheelbearing but i recommend none turbo for reliability and turbo for fun 🙂
Thats totally unnecessary hoing up by 10 lbft incriments. Theres a torque process where you torque down to like 30 then loosen all the bolts then torque to final torque and the muddle 2 bolts get a little more
And that’s why i do a good job cause i don’t skip on details but the full video is on My Channel of showing the correct way to do it and not the chilton manual
At worst, it makes no difference. It can only help to clamp the head more evenly. It is literally a difference of a few minutes. Seems like a ridiculous thing to insist people skip out on.
@evanchi9460 Skip out on what ?
@matthewwhite4799 In reference to Kevin suggesting it's just a waste of time. Skipping a few extra 10ft/lb steps.
with something as easy as this i’d rather be safe than sorry, as the other person said the worst it can do is nothing

@@AleksanderSzadurski 5 Dollar homie
Speed handle, still got one. 😅
@RogerDurham-v9s Tool Check 🙂
Great vid. Does this work when using new TTY head bolts??
Now that i do not know because i always reuse head bolts and Thank you 🙂
Good series. One question: would you recommend/consider leaving the intake off until the torque converter bolts are installed? Seems like you'd have better access and less chance to drop one of those 4 bolts without that piece in the way. Of course, cover up the ports with rags or whatever to prevent parts and debris from falling in during engine install.
You can on some years without the egr tube but with this one it would be a pain to tighten the tube but still possible but you could stuff a rag down where the torque converter bolts are so you don’t loose them and Thank You 🙂
SteinFab Garage has a better method to manually resurface head block.
That’s good everyone needs to find a way that works better for them 🙂
So the 2009 leak coolant and oil externally ?not internally? How many miles this engine had?
@@FreshMikeable yes the leak externally because of a design flaw with the head gasket and when they actually overheat and blow the head gasket it pushes exhaust in to the antifreeze and it has to be real bad before it mixes antifreeze and oil but by then you might as well junk it because of too much warping and damage 🙂
is that a subaru head ?

I always cut the heads off a couple of bolts, cut slots in them and use them as studs for gasket and head alignment.

Hey Mr. Subaru, would you recommend getting an oil analysis done on a EJ253 around 280k with a recent head gasket repair if you did the job yourself and kinda already know you fucked it up? Asking for a friend.

We only lubricate fasteners if the maintenance manuals tell us to. And if they tell us to, we lubricate them with the specified lubricant. Screwing with K-factor can lead to parts more than 2x over tension or under tension design.
@@EchoConstellation Instructions are good but the teacher is always better
As a high performance engine builder .. this is absolutely bad practice You don’t install fasteners or studs with any form of lubricants Or the torque sequence will not produce adequate , and accurate results
@@nickfoy7430 well this is definitely not a high performance engine but i would still do it my way got to have that smoothness 🙂
I've learned my lesson the hard way, head bolts are never reused.
@@paisleyprince5280 and i have never used new on a subaru now other vehicles are different
I just installed that same headgasket on that same motor lol
Should mention it’s not a universal thing. Some call for clean and dry, or wet. Be sure what you’re supposed to do for each application.
never heard of that on head bolts
Dry torque........ That's why you clean and dry everything
definitely not right
Always make sure your application calls for a wet torque or a dry torque
Everyone doing anything mechanical deserves some instruction in what nut factor is and how it affects indicated torque vs bolt strain.
yes but never heard of dry torque on head bolts
@@matthewwhite4799 all depends on application, some Honda engines call for a dry torque on the head bolts
