In this video, I demonstrate a technique developed by Lynwood Kreneck called the "No Print". It's named this because in the end it no longer shows any method of printmaking! It involves a wash-away method much like a sugar lift. I saw sugar-lift in the video but it's more of a soap lift. Please check out www.kreneckstudios.com to see Lynwood's amazing prints! If you took the hinge off the one side to make the top floating and added another press arm on that side you could make an even pressure press

    I am just starting out with printmaking having a background in Art Education, however I worry about appropriation and utilizing a tool that is deeply embedded in the home life of a culture of which I'm not a part. I live and work in central California and Southern Arizona, both places I can easily and cheaply grab a tortilla press, but am hesitant due to the cultural implications of using one. Not necessarily trying to get a blanket statement, I'm just curious about your thoughts concerning this?

    • @josephvelasquez1094
      @josephvelasquez1094 ปีที่แล้ว

      The impetus of sharing this video is the expansion and accessibility of printmaking! Though the tortilla press is the inspiration, once you make one it's not like you can press tortillas with it anyway. Also, simply giving credit to Tres Gatos Press, myself and many many others who use this method will show that you've done your research and are considerate and aware of the cultural use and significance. Spread the ink!!

      @@josephvelasquez1094 Thank you for your response! I'm excited to try it with some of my students this year! A baren works fine, but the kids *love* presses. Something magical happens for them when they use one vs a baren. I'll be sure to credit the ingenious and resourceful minds that came up with this. :)

    Hi Joseph. That's an inspiring video. I'm a printmaker here in northern New Mexico. I love the idea of using a tortilla press for my woodblocks and linocuts, but I'm hesitant because of local sensitivities about cultural appropriation since I'm an anglo. Do you have any thoughts/reassurances to share about that?

    • @josephvelasquez1094
      @josephvelasquez1094 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't be concerned with that as long as you give due credit. like I do, and not take credit as if it's your own concept.

    WOW!!! that was so interesting. I really like the way you use just normal objects that one may have at home to use and get the same effect. Though I will ask, must one change the "tortilla" press in order to get the same results??? I was thinking on getting one as is, but now I'm wondering. I love this idea because I'm a crafter. thank you so much for sharing....will go to your website and check out your store.

    Awesome results. A friend gifted me a large trunk, I want to convert it into a portable block printing press as remenicent as old news paper presses as possible. Other than torilla press, do you recommend other small press models I could try fitting in a trunk to travel round with? Weight wise, I'm hoping press can move round on a hand truck or be lifted by two people.

      I have used shower liner vinyl sheeting (thin gray stuff) glued to hardboard to carve custom and bigger sizes and it works pretty well. Bit of prep but it's much cheaper than the cost of large lino! I got mine from the home despot (not misspelled) in a big roll for $33 for 5'x6' and just cut it down. The hardboard tempered panel 4'x8' (1/8" thick) was $13 and the glue was some waterproof adhesive stuff I had. I used a rolling pin and brayer to get the air bubbles out and stacked books while it dried. (You can probably spray or coat the panel with a sealer prior to gluing down the liner, but I don't submerge it when I clean off the ink so I didn't do that.) I just get the front wet, scrub off the ink, then dry it face down with a little weight so it stays flat for the next time I print. It is pretty thin material, but it is SO much cheaper for the big images I want to carve. I use a cold laminator to print the blocks and it works well. It's just a suggestion that might work for someone! @@josephvelasquez1094
