We were really excited to try this out, and pretty hopeful it would go PERFECT! 🤣
Some things went right, some things went wrong. I’m going to share with you guys what we liked about this build, and what we’ll be adjusting.

It looks really pretty there, even though so cold :) I like your barn and pen set ups. Blessings!
Thank you!! I’ll be posting tonight how the girls did in the new set up :)
Progress on the barn interior looking good. Hope it works well for you. The animals are looking great with your custom feed mixture.
I appreciate that. I’ve been observing and adjusting feed since they were calves! I’m a visual learning, so seeing cause and effect changing feed has been helpful. I want my Holstein heavier and the steers, but other than that I’m pretty happy all together 😁 I’ll post an update soon how how the girls did in the free stalls…. Hint… you were right! 🤣
@@FaithNFarmstead You tried at least, I grew up with an existing facility, probably from the 40's but functioned for the 4-6 we milked. We were a little more prepared than you. I had 2 Surge bucket milkers, a vacuum pump and a DeLaval cream separator before the calves came.
@@kswaynes7569 We have a machine with a portable pump on it!! I’m going to start using it here in the next couple of weeks :) Just don’t want to clean it twice a day for the amount of milk I’m getting right now. It’ll make more sense with two cows :) We are city folk transitioning to the farm life! Last night we said… “well… we’ve collected more experience!!” 🤣 long story short- we need better dividers.
Raya is learning the halter it seems. After chasing Chester again.. I am regretting not training him to the halter. He still makes me go get him. All the girls come to their names.
@@carsonandclark she still makes me chase her like her mama does, but she’s learning to stand patiently and walk well. I don’t blame you for not haltering him.. it does take some effort to perfect it and hard to decide when you know you’re going to eat em! I did halter train my bulls so I can tie em up someday… the steers I did at one point but don’t want to keep investing the time 😳
-3F in Southcentral Kansas this morning, dusting of snow last night. 29 degrees in Anchorage and they have little snow. It’s Winter in America, we all have to deal with it, one way or another. Animals look great even with the cold. Costly feeding now but well worth it.
@@kswaynes7569 Oh man!!! That’s cold! I’m shivering here at 23 degrees. No snow for us… yet. I appreciate that!! I don’t mind spending extra on feed and having the peace of mind they’re comfortable. 😊

I bet the milk really flows letting the calf nurse along side of you milking. By the sounds of the milk coming out, you are doing great at this milking thing.
@@carsonandclark Rouge lets out almost a gallon more along with the calf! And double the cream 😳 I still like knocking two birds out with one stone and halter training while I milk… I think I’ll start morning halter training, and let Raya calf share at night!!
Yummy. I am still trying to figure out how to use up all the milk. 😊 one of the things I like to do is make a big pot of hot cocoa. It is soo good. Another thing I do is can it up. It is super simple.. And I no longer buy canned milk from the grocery store.
@@carsonandclark ooooooh that’s a good idea!! I need to buy some more jars…. I want to make yogurt and pudding but I’m currently using every vessel for milk storage. You should post a recipe for canning milk!! If you already have one, please tag me ❤️
gahhhh......this feels like a summary of my life. Isn't it ironic how creating content changes us? That saying "do it messy", well, it's true. Ya gotta accept the flaws, evaluate and assess. It's brutal at first, but truly feel like it's made me more comfortable in my skin. Bless you for this video.
@@AngiesCritterChronicles YES! There was a quote that changed my mindset.. I can’t remember it exactly but essentially it said “Do it BAD. It’s better than doing nothing” The man’s used examples such as “it’s better to brush your teeth for 30 seconds than not at all”, “it’s better to do half the dishes than none” and so on…. I had a “perfectionist” mindset… and if I didn’t have time to do it “perfect” I felt crippled to do anything at all. Being OK with being messy and learn as I go … enabled me to do the things I wanted to do!! I imperfectly raise dairy cattle, chickens, etc… but I’m doing it. I’m glad you can relate!! There’s more people like you out there. :) It takes a lot to give ourselves an honest look. But oh it’s so gratifying when you take a step to do the work :)

Hello from Florida! We raise our own meats too and love it! Whatever they eat comes out in the meat and the fat. We are what we eat. That's exact! The main key ingredient for our taste in the finished product is Alfalfa hay. It's expensive but it pays for itself in a happy, healthy animal with no gut health issues because of highly nutritional, minimal processing and it's easily digestible. Here's the awesomeness of it too...the smell of the meat cooking is incredible, and the taste is so good that I stopped eating out. Especially no more fine dining. It can't compare to our home-grown meats. Good luck on your venture and happy farming! :) Blessings!
@@SweetwaterRanchMinistries Awesome advice!!! I may need to try this for my next bull. I have considered replacing our grains with servings of alfalfa hay, just haven’t made the switch yet! Thank you so much for sharing you experience:)

I know you have to make a living but these videos reinforce my choice not to eat meat. The idea of eating flesh grosses me out
@@leighkerster3019 I don’t make money off of selling meat. This is an animal we raised ourselves to feed our family.
Proud of you and the life you’re living! Faith that in Jesus you are loved.
Thank you so much for your kind words and support! 😊
I guess it’s just a difference of opinions but I don’t agree with your thought process in this video. I’m 41 and for all my life I have loved steak, burgers etc. like loved and there is nothing better to me than a juicy NY strip or ribeye. With that being said, I’m getting older and I realized that I don’t want to live the rest of my life knowingly causing harm to animals if it can be avoided. I stopped eating steaks, burgers, pork, chicken, turkey and now only eat fish. I’d like to even stop that at some point but I’m taking baby steps. Those cows trust you, share a bond with you, and you may not realize it but the slaughter process is pretty brutal and you should ask to view one of the animals as it is being slaughtered so you really see how inhumane it is. There is a farm in Germany that I saw ina TH-cam documentary and what they do is have a kill truck come and while the animal is out in the field eating, minding its business, some sniper essentially shoots it from a distance and the animal has no idea it’s coming. One minute it’s here the next minute, poof it’s gone. They then have someone go to where it went down and certify the slaughter, they load it up on the truck, and then take it to be processed. At least that’s humane, I get that you like meat but seriously ask the place that processes your cows to watch the whole process for one including the slaughter so you can see up close and then if you still think it’s fine that’s up to you but then at least you’re fully aware of what happens. I think the way the German farm does it is the most humane, the cow never sees it coming, no fear no anxiety just here one day gone the next. It is more expensive to do it that way but it’s much more ethical and you can feel good that you didn’t cause an animal unnecessary stress and suffering. Just my 2 cents but I hope you read this and take my advise ce, ask to see the whole process, I think it might make you rethink some of your beliefs. -Will
@@willlazenby1050 As stated in the video- Miller was not removed from the farm to be slaughtered. He was slaughtered right in front of me, with the exact method you explained. Our bull was absolutely content when he passed, and had no indication that it was his last day. Unlike some places, he was not required to “fast”. He got his favorite meals all morning, fresh water, and no stress. In my opinion, Miller had an excellent life. He stayed with a herd rather than isolated like many dairy bulls. He was loved, lived a high quality life, and never had a bad day. It seems like your opinion is not based off of farming, raising animals, or spending significant time around bovine creatures, but rather from random videos over the internet that you at have watched that support your current ideas on animals. I respectfully decline your advice. Let me ask you this- with the current condition of the world, what do you purpose we do with all the bulls in the world? If they aren’t to be eaten, what becomes of them? Do we stop breeding them? Do you castrate every bull? In my opinion, by choosing to breed my 5 heifers to a bull, which others deem as very unfavorable having under 20 cows, I gave a bull who otherwise would have been a steer or eaten sooner… a chance to breed and live with a herd on pasture. Which is a bulls ultimate highest potential in his life. To be loved and adored by us was a bonus.
@@FaithNFarmstead I did not see the part about him being put down in front of you, if that is the case then at least you are doing it correctly and I am sorry for that. I am not against eating animals for food. Just as a little more background on me, my grandfather had an Angus farm in Alabama for over 30 years and I was up close with many animals, have been to livestock auctions right at our own barn, worked on the farm every summer, etc. So I'm not saying any of this just randomly. You are making assumptions because you don't like what I have to say, but you should perhaps not rush to judgement either. I don't know your age so I won't assume to make any judgements based on your age. I just know personally for me, as I have gotten older, I now have a different perspective. Take it as you will, I'm just stating my own experiences, beliefs and opinions. As you have stated you can choose not to take my advice, but at least you can be aware of it from someone who has been there and done that. Anyways, I appreciate you taking the time to respond, and hope you have a great weekend. -Will
@@willlazenby1050 I suppose we both made some quick conclusions, and I apologize for the assumption I made about you. Sharing a little bit more details and having some more insight into where you’re coming from, I think I can connect more to why you feel the way you do. I’ve been to auctions many times, and I’ve always felt uncomfortable there. The people are kind and helpful, the food was great, but the energy coming from the animals themselves is what I couldn’t get past. The animals were always so scared and I could feel it. The worst for me were the dairy cows who probably been around humans for years and were trusting and cooperative, and had the sudden realization they may not be “safe”. I am young and new to this. I do understand that things have been done a certain way for decades…. And I think that’s the way you’ve been exposed to. Please correct me if I’m wrong. I don’t want to do things the way that they’ve been done, that’s why I’m choosing to raise livestock. I want milk from a cow who doesn’t have to sacrifice her baby. I want meat from a cow that was never knee deep in his own manure. If I choose to eat meat- I want to be apart of its full life cycle if I can. I never want to use up all their resources for myself without being completely certain I gave them something equivalent to what they’ve given me! -Ashley
