Why nobody really needs a 303: Making your acid sounds more iconic and less boring with free synths
it seems sound in certain areas has remained stuck in a loop, yet, if you're int getting in that emotional ballpark, modern instruments give you the tools to explore the space of acid sounds in more diverse ways than the real thing or any emulation ever could
if you disagree and you think you really need a 303, hey, it's a great world and a great synth market for you :)

    Hi there! Greetings from Italy (I presume you’re Italian too :-). First of all, I want to thank you for your video on Vital and Surge XT. I really appreciate your style and dedication in explaining things. You might be one of the best when it comes to sharing synth programming workflows! About this video (generative music made with Vital): I know it’s an older video, but have you continued exploring these capabilities? I confess, the soundscapes you created (or should I say the machine created?) are pretty unique and interesting. They have a kind of eerie, unsettling quality, much more so than typical "cinematic" horror music with ghostly voices. Your sounds remind me of something from a sci-fi scene where a computer tries to "remember" something created by humans, recalling wars and disasters. Odd, but I admit, hypnotic in a way. Here’s my request: I’ve returned to making ambient music (I used to make it with guitars two decades ago - see Solyaris Music, Giorgio Robino), and I’m more into tonal or interval "consonances" now (if that makes sense to you). I’d be curious to see how to make something generative like you did, but perhaps more tonal, or a blend of both. Have you already done something like that? Anyway, please keep making videos. They’re absolutely valuable. Thanks again, Giorgio

    Non of this sounds sounded as acid. Some hardware and software clones can sound with distortion lika 303. Some are better without any distortion. Mostly all of my adempts with software synths are sounded more like 303 with only saw waveform and 12-24db filter and resonance high with both filter and envilope filter decay short without any relase and sustein. This sounds in video just sounded gritty and digital and not acid at all.

Has your knowledge come from working with other people has it come from reading books or watching tutorials or just experimenting?

    • @platipo
      @platipo 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks, what an articulated and inquisitive comment :) might take a while to respond properly. To get to your last part first, I had "some" formal music training playing the piano during my childhood and teens, but I was always fascinated with artificial sounds, from pioneering records to the soundtracks of early videogames; got into synths in my late teens, played keyboards in some bands, got a degree and a phd in physics (which kinda helps), and have been "messing around" since, which means little short of 2 decades. I have tried my best to make a living out of music, but so far I haven't been properly succesful at that, therefore even this channel has been dead for a while as I have been busy teaching maths and physics to high school teens, a job I'd rather leave to someone else, but since I'm doing it, I do my best to do it right, so it takes too much of my time and energy. About "additional tips" really I don't have many, most of what I do in this video comes from my own research and experimentation, by interaction with other geeks, either in person or online; apart from that, I mentioned at times a few nice articles and online books (like Gordon Reid's for example, or the excellent VirusC manual by Howard Scarr), hope this helps :) Thanks again for the comment.

    Thank you for taking the time with this video. I've been thinking about getting the Legacy bundle but keep holding off for Zebra 3. This video is now making me think about getting it anyway. You're right, U-He are excellent at designing synths that work well as learning tools for synthesis. I'm in the middle of having set myself the project of doing a 3 track ep only using Bazille - all sounds created from scratch for everything. I've learnt so much in the process as well as the value of selecting one synth and doing my best to learn it inside out and well. This morning I just watched Urs Heckman talking about Zebra 3 at Superbooth. He made a fleeting comment about maybe, just maybe showcasing something at Namm, so I reckon this still gives enough time to learn Zebra 2 along with Zebrelette 3 ready for when Zebra 3 is released. This is the one paid synth I was tempted to buy when it was discounted. But on the other hand I don't think I need to make diverse farts for my music. I have Massive for farts and although I bought it to make farts I don't remember making too many farts with it. I think geeks get obsessed with making farts. However Phase plant may have just the right sound for someone who wants to make nice sounding music but wants to venture in fartland every once in a while. Someone like me.

      It is, as I sure mentioned, a very capable synth, and to my knowledge, the only modular VST which doesn't try to emulate some rack thing, or has some other wires and similar concoctions, apart from my beloved Zebra, yes, there is Zebra3 coming, but at the time I made the video, it was nowhere near sight, and Zebra2 was already over a decade old. The fart topic in itself, should deserve a more nerdy approach, I might make a video on the topic sometime :)

    I'll mention few free synths that may not be too diverse but are good sounding and definitely worth checking out. GR 8-it souds amazing even before you put filters and effects. One trick pony but a good one. One by Kilohearts- it looks simple but it sounds very organic and it's very straight forward. It has a litle bit of FM, morphing between some basic wave shapes and a voice filter which adds some intrest to the sound. Apricot-cheesy sounding and basic but perfect for trance plucks and some trance leads. There is more, but for someone like me who doesn't want to get bogged into deep sond design and still want good sounds these are good synths. If you dig enough in the depths of interwebs there is more obscure synths that got forgotten that sound amazing but I will stop here. Of the shown in the video Odin is for me. I can easily open one generator and make some basic wave with unison, open second one and make another wave. Blend them together and put a litle bit of LFO and bam-new sound.

      This video was focused on wavetable synths, not free synths in general, at the time I made this, the ones I mentioned were the only ones I could find which were reasonably recent and feature rich in my view. Yes, Odin is a nice little thing, it does have a few unique quirks, and it is incredibly light on the CPU for how nice it sounds, but honestly, I don't find myself reaching for that nearly as often as I do reach for Vital or SurgeXT.

    Great intro man & informative comparison, came here because I'm debating whether to get Serum because of the price

      As I mentioned in another video, if I was on the market for an "old workhorse synth" with some money, but not so much money, today I'd put it into Zebra Legacy. Thanks for the comment :)

      I was utterly convinced I had replied to this quite some time ago... Anyway, sure, just have some patience, unfortunately I don't make a living with music, and teaching maths and physics in a high school takes away most of my time and headspace; last year too, I mostly released during summer, this year is being a lot more stressful than last one... Anyway, I'm full of ideas in the "background", I released an album in december ( Here labyrinthinecrew.bandcamp.com/album/contemporary-ancient-music I made a "community" post about it on YT, but it got zero engagement for some reason unknown to me), and I have more than a few ideas for new videos, also, Zebra3 is coming! Thanks for the comment, the patience, and the support :)

      Made a lot myself, it has been my go to synth for quite a while, I wish I could say they were successful. Would you share a link to some of your work?

    I use Bitwig Studio (DAW), which you might know. Bitwig Studio contains a modular environment to build up ... almost anything from simple effects up to real modular all in everything modular patch... well, that's not my intention. But all of Bitwig Studio's oscillators inside this modular environment come with different kinds of pitch/frequency control. Most notably there are a Pitch In and a Phase In, which tell basically their intended goal. Most users don't really use FM, because using the Pitch In with linear signals realizes a quite non-linear (and btw non-symmetric - in no understanding)kind of frequency modulation with odd sound, not "pitch-true"... not really that good musically controllable. But... almost all of them overlook a very simple method, which can be used to re-calculate the modulation signals in a way, that makes the concerning oscillator behave as if it is controlled by a linear frequency input - hence enabling _ t r u e _ ( =linear) FM, which can even quite simply be patched, so that you can control a value, which you might know as "modulation factor". In my understanding linear FM has a very ugly disadvantage: If you modulate crossing the "0 Hz" barrier, the sound begins to behave more and more like exponential FM, which doesn't keep the pitch played, because the generated frequencies are not longer "symmetrical" to the carrier frequency, which otherwise is the case fore modulation factors up to 1. Although linear FM in my ears at least sound more "warm" than phase modulation (PM), this disadvantage especially begins to limit it's use in case of the need for exact pitches... this said: Linear FM used with high modulation factors might give interesting sounding sond sources for all kinds of technoid music, but... as long as it is supposed to sound "smooth" and "tamed" this modulation factor has to be limited to 1. This symmetry though remains in PM - independent of the modulation factor - up to very extreme sounds - making a much better musically controllable sound... which imho was the reason, why PM has made it's way as _ t h e _ preferred modulation method against linear FM. This linear FM might be interesting to "thicken" an otherwise too "silent" sounding deep (pure sine) bass, but... that can be achieved using PM and some filtering (presumed a pitch-following modulation depth as well as filtering).
