how do you tell a story in a world with no good guys?
มุมมอง 9718 หลายเดือนก่อน
there might be a reason why people like the villains in your stories more than the the protagonists - you've made them interesting. it's the same with your world. making a side purely "good" or "bad" can make your story/game feel like a young adult novel and end up being pretty unrealistic. pure evil is a tool. use it well, instead of painting with it as a broad brush. I think realising studio ghibli is cosy fantasy really opened up my mind about the genre. You feel like you’re in a dream watching those movies, there’s real emotions good and bad but the ending always has your new friends feel safe and secure. Cosy. They deal with big world problems but not from the point of view of the heroes but the regular people who are just trying to live and sometimes are just trying to grow up but change is something they are having to deal with right now. Ie grave of the fireflies. Or not SG but Wolf’s Rain.
I know token stamp tokens when I see them...
Very good points on worldbuilding! If you haven´t read it yet, I recommend Bakker´s "Prince of Nothing" trilogy, it has one of the best and most balanced magic systems out there and its use in warfare is very realistically depicted
I can't believe the ditch guy is featured here, I love him, already liked and subscribed
I'm a huge cozy mystery fan. I will read literally anything by Laura Childs and Lilian Jackson Braun. And I don't mind a romance or two in my fantasy adventures along with all the dragons, but a cozy fantasy??? I have a feeling I won't get any further with that than I did reading Twilight, and I hurled that across the room after the first page and a half. (Symbolically, not literally. I was reading the Kindle version on my phone, and I wasn't going to risk a cracked screen no matter how tawdry and facile the writing.)
I still find attack on titan to be the most impressive positive example for a well thought out warfare with unique mechanics. The mechanics alone, having huge meatsuits capable of tanking and dishing out good amounts of damage and the entire aspect of the 3 dimensional attacks via a hook and gas propulsion system, are already so unique on their own, but being introduced to more and more ways how either these technologies could be used in different ways, building new technology with the available ressources (sometimes even ressources they discover within the series themselves) and seeing how different people work with and against these complex mechanics is just so awesome to see. Yes, there are occasional plotholes and some potential is lost, but it's a farcry from what we are usually used to in media nowadays.
"One does not merely let the opportunity to step upon a dwarf slip away." - An Elf of Middle-earth
😂 Have you honestly never heard of Christmas? 🎄Cozy fantasy has been around for easily a hundred years. Foolish child.
I don't know if it's neccesary at all, but I'm planning on reading the Art of War (both the one from Sun-Tzu and the one from Machiavelli) before writing my book so that I can get a better understanding of logistics and battle tactics. I'm curious about what it can add to my story and worldbuild.
The Yugioh reference "destroying the moon" is so goddam funny lol
great vid! regarding GoT - have you tried using Dune: Adventures in the Imperium? GoT is already so close to Dune and the 2D20 system adjusted to it seems, at least to me, like a great fit for GoT as well
Great work - I give my thanks with the unholy trinity of Like, Subscribe, Comment to feed the Beastly Algorithm,
P.S. Awesome-cool setting you outlined too - I especially like the idea of druid-enhanced Gallic warbands assymmetrically insurrecting all over the place!
For all the budget GoT has, i wish they hired someone who actually understood how medieval battles were fought. There were so many stupid things ive seen both in GoT and HotD, its a wonder why they are not mocked more often.
I absolutely agree with you, this game completely falls apart for me in a second playthrough Also, This style of game iirc is called a "Princess game" (though its VERY hard to search this up considering _those_ websites), the origins of the genre dating to 1991 with the Princess Maker series Though its way more "light" in skill management, at least in terms of a more casual playthrough
Meanwhile, in Arknights, an army of 41 Kazimierz Silverlance Pegasi managed to destroy thousands of Ursus soldiers. Though to be fair, the 41 knights were still "utterly defeated" according to a certain Wendigo who was once that world's strongest warrior.
Harry Potter and Twilight are proves that everything this dude says actually doesn't matter that much
Could not agree more! My favorite and most treasured memories of WH40K was a long running campaign where we created a sector of space and bunch of worlds and actually branched out into Battlefleet Gothic; Epic 40K and even Space Hulk to play out scenarios that all contributed to the ongoing narrative.
"a big f*ck off ditch"🤣🤣 sometimes it's the simple things😂
An important question that needs to get answered is whether or not a shield wall creates full cover
9:25 Because their enemies have a village capable of producing potions of strength?
Wargames are boardgames, always been
I created a dnd world (where all my campaigns are in) where magic is incredibley rare so people don´t have to worry about formation problems and also I was sick of evry priest in other settings being able to heal so I made it so no one knows if gods exist and clerics are priest that belive so strongly in their deity they get their magic through will power and only 1% of priests has that ability.
Rick Riordan also used the eagle standard as a magic shield with his Heroes of Olympus series
Oh my god, it was so fucking stupid when the elves jumped over the dwarven shieldwall in the Hobbit movie! Along with many other stupid things added to that story.
Malazan book of fallen is the best about medieval magic grand scale warfare
Oh my goodness, finally someone raised the question. This is the scene why I don't like The Hobbit. I also really don't like the cavalry charge under Helm's Deep, but at least it didn't ruin the whole battle for me
while i dont like the movies, i think the whole point of the elves jumping over the dwarves was that it isnt tactically smart. like you said it was about elven ego. yes, it wasnt directly said but it was shown time and time again that there is a rivalry between the 2 races and they always try to one up each other. also to be fair elven fighters are pretty much supersoldiers. imagine an army of legolas-es jumping in. its not suicide, its being a show off. the dwarves also dont charge because their allies are in danger but because they dont want to let the elves get all credit. in a way i saw it like a morale boost, just like between gimli and legolas. also you said they should be archers because thats what they are good at. they are good archers for sure, but they are equally as good as sword fighting with some of the best swords and so on. still a good video, just my take on that one sceene
Can I apply the ditch to Foxhole?
A battle that always drove me nuts, I've gotta criticize one of my favorite movies of all time: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Specifically, the battle at the Black Gate. Aragorn's strategy: distract Sauron to give Frodo time to destroy the ring. Aragorn's tactic: use the Palantir to contact Sauron immediately after a battle Aragorn miraculously won, just moments after Pippin brought the ring to Gondor (as Sauron thought Pippin had the ring). This made Sauron think that Aragorn had the ring, and by arrogance of its power, he would be able to use it against Mordor, but Sauron knows you cannot use the ring against him. This is good. The strategy and purpose of the battle is not what went wrong, but the battle itself. After Aragon assembles many Gondorians and Rohirim to ride with him to Mordor, they challenge the dark lord without any siege weapons. For no reason at all, Sauron opens the gate and sends his army out to meet the foe in a battlefield, despite his gate being impenetrable. After Sauron sends out his army, Aragorn, Gandalf, Legolas, and the entire army dismount and send their horses away to battle on foot. Although Aragorn is there to buy Frodo time, he charges the enemy. Blunders: 1.) Aragorn lays siege without siege weapons. You need a way to tear down your enemy's gate. 2.) Sauron opens the gate freely. You want to defend your troops inside a protective gate; it's the whole reason you have a gate. 3.) All the good guys dismount and send their horses away. The horses have many strategic advantages in such a battle. 4.) The good guys charge. They're there buying time; you want to prolong the battle, not get it over with. They should have brought siege weapons and bombarded the Black Gate. Maybe Sauron could have sent out his forces by hubris, not caring how many orcs died, but confident of his victory, or else intending to kill Aragorn and retrieve the ring. When Sauron does send out his forces, Aragorn should organize a fain retreat (on horse back), acting as a means to prolong the battle, better their survival, and draw the orcs further out of Mordor for Frodo and Sam to sneak by. I think this is more in line with how it played out in the books, so they had the source material. I can forgive hand-waving the logistics to capture a cinematic charge, but you just showed the good guys on horses and the bad guys behind an impenetrable gate. It begs the audience to ask why either side chose to get rid of their advantages to fight on foot.
concerning the battle of the five armies, it's a peak scene cinematically, but once you've watched it over a few times and really think about what the soldiers were doing, it all falls apart lol
Taking pieces out of Blades to help you play 5E is like taking pieces of a Ferrari to boost the performance of a Lada.
This kinda makes me appreciate Malazan even more. Yeah there probably were mistakes, but Erikson being a historian gave better care to Battles involving massive armies and sorcerers on both sides. Highly recommend
I tend to think about magic in war like I do air defense in modern day. It doesn't matter how big or powerful you think your "hypersonic" missile is, because you're never going to get past Patriot, Iron Dome, or especially Aegis. If you invest enough points into countering anything offensive that the other side's mages can throw at you, you force them to fight conventionally. From there, it's all about who has the better army, and you're free to supplement your martial units with magic in more subtle ways that can give them advantages in unit-to-unit confrontations. At least, that's my general philosophy, though it of course all very dependent on your setting.
This such a cool idea. By the way i may be crazy as i am making this even smaller by having armada battles but whenever the figters collided we go to an x-wing battle.
i am also redhead. i am also dnd nerd. i am also running a Rome game. hello brother :)
Im so glad I watched this before my homebrew D&D world
A fantasy universe with working fantasy magic like Elder Scrolls just completely changes warfare.
what the hell are tehse comments?
ya the elves jumping over a really solid interlocked shield wall was the stupidest thing I have ever seen topping the light Calvary charge against the night kings army
It's cute that you call WH 40k, etc "war games" LOL.
I don’t know, I’ve played war-games for about 25 years, only twice I played in a competitive environment. I play mostly for the fun and enjoyment of weaving a story on the table (for example TooFatLardies games are perfect for that). Lately I’ve been playing a good amount of cooperative games like Rangers of Shadow Deep or Stargrave. Those are all miniature and even scale agnostic. The issue is that’s they are pretty obscure. The thing is, big companies (like Games Workshop or Warlord Games) focus on selling competitive wargames because its where they can make big bucks. In competitive environments players always seek the meta which the companies make sure to keep it evolving so people keep buying new models of their strongest stuff. That allows those companies to expand, have stores everywhere with many organized events. That’s where many people get their first contact with wargaming.
Quality video man, I think you will blow up!
imagine writing something so people could argue about it on reddit jfc go outside and talk to actual humans nerd
Have the 300 and give them a couple mages and were golden, absolutely winning anything.
why the romans wouldnt have mages?
Just watch how MMOs fight in Guild Wars for example. It has a game mode of World Vs World Vs World. Three servers acting as armies to vie for control over four maps. Also has siege equipment and defenses plus all the AOE magic you can think of.
World War z did or video essay that yet?
Personally I like historicals for exactly the complaints in this. Narratives can be played out in a single battle or a series can be strung together without needing every single participant
My favorite showcase of a fantasy army is from Tanya the Evil. It realistic in how magic would be used in warfare. The other aspect is how they recruit mages by testing everyone at young age. In his story based around Rome I think Rome would go all out in recruiting mages or just stealing them from others and raising them in Rome like what Rome did in real life with some barbarian clans family or easier one which is buy mage slaves cause there definitely gonna be mage slaves during that time period
Warhammer Total War, it will have all the answers to your question. lol
