Escaping A HURRICANE! You've NEVER Seen A Sailing Video Like This!
When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. When the weather sends you a hurricane, you take your boat and sail away as fast as possible through the squalls that stand between you and safety. When your camera microphone stops working without your knowledge, you get creative. Prepare for some seriously dodgy dubbing!
We are sailing on a very small budget, which means there will be more equipment disasters on their way as we push things to their limit! If anyone has any hints and tips to help reduce the frequency of this as the salty ocean environment destroys everything, it would be most welcome.

The phrase "it takes a village" is a common one, and we were reminded of this as the cruisers and locals of Bequia showed us a huge kindness in this weeks video. We thought our outboard was truly done for this time! The joys of living on a budget and pinching pennies to make things last as long as possible... it's part of the adventure, but not exactly the highlight. Boats, surprise local tradi...

St Lucia! Whilst anchored safely (or so we thought) in Rodney Bay, we hire a car to get off the boat and explore the island. Volcanos, sulphur springs, mud baths, and a whole wilderness for us to explore all on our own! This place is beautiful, and if you go off the beaten path, its pretty wild! This week we battle the rust and explain why, despite the unique challenges that it brings, we chose a steel sailboat to live aboard and circumnavigate on. Seasoned sailors and boat owners already know this, but it's good to highlight that sailing around the world is not all adventure, and actually discuss that aspect within our videos a bit more. Sometimes, we find ourselves in situations that we aren't entirely sure how we got into. This was one of the times. You guys are always fun to watch, but this video may be the best sailing video I've ever seen. Nice work!
Awesome 😎😎😎😎
i was hit by huricane and destroyed
Nice save! Cheers.
@lonnychs779 Thanks you... a save indeed! There was panicked despair initially, but we laughed it off into a positive. Happy New Year to you ✨️
Bloody laughed my nuts off well done u guys Sooooo last year. Take care and have fun, from New Zealand
@murrayrainey9699 we did too 😄 Perhaps found ourselves a little *too* entertaining. Waving over to New Zealand 👋
OMG!!!! This has got to be the best video I've ever seen in my life!!! I loved it!!! I love yalls humor! Tbh, your voice is what comes to my head when something is happening. All I hear is Oh Tony lol
@temanpatterson5345 very glad you enjoyed it... we had no idea how it was going to turn out 😂 We just rolled with the punches/equipment failure, and somehow, it seemed to have come together quite well.
That was funny! So sad for what was to come.
@Catalina58601 we are very grateful that the mic played up here and not during the next episodes, because there's no way it would have been appropriate for us to humour our way out of that! Absolutely, what came next was utterly heartbreaking, but a lot of positive humanity also shows up for it 💕
Well done you guys that was brilliant really entertaining, also love you're down to earth style of living your dream. Mal from the UK .xx
Thank you! We had no choice but to be down to earth... we had to accept that the equipment messed up, and there was no way we were able to rectify it with much grace 😂 But we had a hoot doing it! Waving across to the UK at you 👋
@@CutterboveSailing Thank-you take care ,Happy New year and stay safe.
I’m not sure what to say about the sound effects 😂😂😂 I was having trouble hearing due to the giggling going on, y’all are silly & have water logged your brains😂. Great video indeed❤😘
In hindsight, perhaps we should have scripted it *a little bit* because we all found each other far too entertaining 😂

Just Love u ❤😂❤😂❤
@mariabroms4906 Glad you enjoyed it! A change from the norm, admittedly, but we had a chuckle.
Looks like you made it, Spent 3 months there rebuilding a yacht then sailed it back to Rodney bay St Lucia. Very happy times there, 'have a double' its their tradition breakfast. If you leave don't go along the coast to Panama, Venezuelan pirates they kill and or rob you I've seen the results from sailors who sailed back to Chaguramas. Turn off your AIS if you go that way or as advised sail out to the oil rig and then head westerly direction. Enjoy your stay.
@michaelgreenland4682 oh we LOVE doubles now 😂 it became a Saturday morning tradition for breakfast at the market in Port of Spain. We should probably learn to make them onboard, in fact! Yes, the pirates are an issue around there. We have been keep clear of that area but at some point will probably have to make plans that involve getting a little closer than we might like. Trying not to think about that for now though 😅
Happy New Year !!! Wishing you and yours all the best. Keep up the great work.
Happy New Year to you, too! May 2025 bring you fair winds in life ✨️
not really a sailing video. more like a big pharma infomercial with sailing in the background. lots of slow motion, grandiose background music, and emotional content. would not want to be on this boat in the event of a real maritime emergency. this crew would break out the flattering camera angles and worry about slow mo replays before they would actually sail.
@mikeb-r3y this is a 20-minute video with snippets from over two weeks of sailing. That's a 20-minute summary of what was actually 20,160 minutes. If our editing style isn't your cuppa tea, that's absolutely fine! There's plenty of other sailing channels out there. But there's no need to make personal assumptions about our capabilities, experience, or safety management onboard, based on purely "I didn't like it." Fair winds, Bryony
@@CutterboveSailing that's fair. Have a good one.
@@mikeb-r3y you too, take care.
This is why you get a pilot house /sailboat - people ...
We love our boat, but admittedly, if we weren't on such a tight budget we'd have constructed some extra protection by now 😂 We will have to hope the situation improves before we intend to sail to high latitudes!
Again funny and inspiring vid from you guys

I spent a few days there back in 2013/4 and should have said somethings before you left but Christmas got in the way, I feel guilty. The museum which Tim's (local taxi driver) brother who made models of yachts etc and photos of him presenting our Queen with a model of Royal Yacht Britannia etc. Tim took me around the entire Island in his taxi and stopped off at the turtle centre, the old sugar cane plantation etc however I met up with a lot of kids on the beach sailing the Iron Duke a 140 year old Whaler with sails, next day they said come out with them and they gave me the helm straight away when we left the beech (they trusted me?), well the helm tiller was a piece of bamboo; so was the boom. We sailed around the bay for about three hours with me giving piratical lessons, there were the crew of 6, two trapezing, one on each jib sheet and one on the main plus one bailing out continually! When we got back to the beach I was greeted by Alex who looked after the young kids and he owned the only sail loft on the island. He invited me and my sailing friend Robin (who owned yacht Sophie Ems at the time) that evening to his loft and when we arrived they were eating Macie do's (god I said not here!) but they had been delivered via the ferry from St Vincent. Next day we left to travel south towards Union Island and eventually to Grenada (Prickly bay), but the kids had be given a J24 to work on and that was there task under Alex's supervision. Good times and looks like us at the time 'hurricane due' which thankfully missed Grenada. Later that year I flew back from the UK to catch up with Robin as he had bought a 43' blue water boat in Trinidad very cheap! which I spent 3 months there rebuilding the entire boat from full paint job to wiring and engine rebuild. The worst think happen was when I landed in Grenada he had contracted Daguie fever ie flu which can kill you, transmitted by mosses. So, I sailed his yacht from Prickly bay to Chaguarmus as the doctor said he will get worst before getting better! Prior to all this; my first trip to the Caribbean to competed in the int 505 world championships in Barbados, So, I feel I know what life you are having and you've brought back memories especially in St Lucia which I spent two months rebuild his yacht before we set of Island hopping like yourselves (don't forget the Petons, beer that is. love to you both and look up Tiger in Union Island he's a great guy for towing us off a reef in the herbier and our return visit when we drifted out to sea when the anchor didn't hold at 3am.
@michaelgreenland4682 ah its okay, we aren't super close to real-time at the moment with the videos, although catching up! It sounds like you had a fantastic time there. It is such a special island with the kindest of people. We were sad to have to leave (tomorrows episode covers that chaos 😄). Mayone one day we will get back there. Dengue is nasty, isn't it. We are always careful but do feel our days are likely numbered before the wrong mosquito bites us and we have to suffer through it 😄 We have done well so far! Lots of strong repellent and sensible clothing at key hours. Hope you had a wonderful New Year. Fair winds to you!
Happy new 🎉😊❤

Bequia looks like a beautiful island. I suppose that was hurricane Beryl that you had to flee from...? Good to know that it didn't hit Bequia very hard. I hope you are both all well again.
Hurricane Beryl indeed! Then it's just a few more episodes before we suddenly catch up a bit closer to real time somewhat, which will be nice. Bequia saw considerably less damage than the islands south of it. It's done well to recover as well, which is nice to see. We are doing okay mostly... don't want to give away too many spoilers 😄 But we are enjoying a few weeks of rest and recovery having pushed ourselves a little too hard, we have realised. We want to feel ready for what should be an incredible 2025! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas, and enjoy the New Year ✨️
Asda bag for life, middle of atlanic, love it
That Asda bag has travelled many nautical miles now!
It’s looks like the last place you wanted to be but surely you have to except this on an ocean crossing?🤷♂️
@donalfinn4205 these were very unseasonable conditions for what was the official East-West crossing season, due to a large tropical storm that had formed up north. We always prepare for the worst, but it certainly was not expected, and many vessels/crews struggled a lot more than we did, with dismastings, exceedingly long passages compared to what they'd planned, and an individual rowing across sadly lost his life. We were very well prepared, thankfully, just extraordinarily tired and managing an unwell crew member.
Merry Christmas y’all ❤ Stay safe Oh goodness the fish dance😂
Merry Christmas to you too! Hope you had a lovely day, and have a wonderful New Year 😊 The fish dance is at risk of becoming a tradition onboard...
Was that Le Mer that you arrived? I sailed an Amel Super Maramu from there to Charleston, SC,
If y'all had the since that God gave you.U would check the weather forecast first and not only that you should keep your butts on dry land
It was a perfect weather window when we left. Forecasts weeks out are not reliable, and there is, therefore, always a risk. That's what makes it an adventure.
WTH. Never hire a crew if they get seasick.

please don’t do that to your lens! or even to the filter. I’ve been guilty of the same but it is much better for the lens coating especially or the filter to not use something as harsh as your mum’s kindly gifted flannel
