And the zen-like skirting! Love the ipe inlay pattern - I built two mondo adirondack chairs out of that with 12--inch wide arms and 3-inches thick. Dulled my blades - it's not called ironwood for nothin'! Paver paths are impressive and look sweet too. Was curious, what was the overall cost? Anyway, great vid and congrats on the completed build! @@stevejensen3471I know. I did the series and then spent a while with friends doing the pavilion and it was hard to film. And time flies. Two years later I finished the lower deck in a month or so and then decided to do a recap of everything since I failed in my documentation skills. Cost = more than I car to say. lol. The pavilion kit was somewhere is the region of 20-30k. I bet all in both decks 50-75K$. Maybe a bit more since lower deck wood costs were still pretty high. IPE was crazy expensive.

    Nice job. I’m a DYI person and I built my first deck 20 years ago. It’s a green superstructure and a white cedar 5/4 top. The deck is cantilever from the home with a double 2x10 beam with a 1/2 green plywood inbetween, and an extra 2x10 wherever the 2x10 beam has a union that’s not on a concrete pier. The deck is 16’ x 48’ long, supported by 13 concrete piers (even with the ground) that are 48” deep (code was 42” deep, I’m in Chicago) and 10” in diameter with rebar. The whole deck is built with 2x10’s. It is blocked in the center. I used colored nails not Phillips head but square hole (new at the time) and also some galvanized Phillips head. Used galvanized hangers at each end (2 per each 16’ joist), with tico nails. The deck is about 19” off the ground. Finished level of the deck is 1/2” below the sliding door. Two staircases, on in middle and one the further corner. Built-in seating on both sides on the farther corner without backrests and can be seated on either side. The end closer to the center staircase has a 4’ high fence, as a safety measure around the table (fence is 16’ both ways from the corner). I ran a 1/2” black steel gas pipe for a natural gas grill, with 2 in line shut-offs (15’ from the deck on the deck, the other in the basement). Also ran power with 3 outlets in the deck. Access to connections is with removable deck boards with round holes. Two years ago I had to replace a 6 deck boards, the superstructure was like new. The deck boards sudffered the most damage where they were screwed on the ends. A professional suggested that I replace the decking with decking that goes diagonally, using on piece decking, with no splices. My old decking was 3@ 16’ , next row 8’, 16’, 16’, 8’, then 3@16’, etc. My 48’ I beam was sitting on 13 posts and was on the ground inbetween. On the ground I placed a black covering made to keep the weeds out and then about 2” of #8 washed stone. The ledger board was drilled and I used 1/2” galvanized bolts 6” long with 2 washers and a lock washer, every 16” (code). The deck was inspected twice, with no problems. Bids for this deck were a low of $6000 , mid bid was $15,000 and the high bid was $25,000. Cost was $2200, labor was free. I started the deck in March of 2004 and completed it July of 2004. I worked on the superstructure during the week and weekend. My 9 year old grandson helped with the superstructure and the planking and stairs were done in one day with my brother-in-law and 2 nephews. I used dog eared cedar planks to cover the bottom, so no skunks or other creatures could call it there home. It was a satisfying build and has lasted a long time and is still going strong!

    Love DIY vids like this! Nice house and back yard on a clear blue sky day with birds chirping, a great fence, a greenbelt beyond, and a homeowner who gophers all his own materials, digs the footing holes, likely mixed his own concrete, uses the right lumber, waterproofs the post/joist tops, uses mondo Simpson Strong-Tie (SST) exterior hardware, wife helping out, and takes his time doing it right! Love it! Did this myself back 7 years ago and then got under our 1923 bungalow's 5-foot crawlspace and seismically retrofitted the home's foundation by replacing all the old posts with new pressure-treated posts propped up by screw jacks and attached the homes sill plate to the concrete stem walls with SST universal earthquake plates. A real sense of accomplishment beyond my using mondo seismic hardware compliant with 3rd floor seismic codes! Given the home was in San Diego and had previously gone through a 7.1 mag quake in 2017 that shook the hell outta the place, I'm surprised the home had never slid off the concrete stem walls over 100 years. Like your solid deck, that home could now go through a mag 10 quake and would likely be the only home standing in the hood. We sold it in one day for 1M in 2020 off a 320K purchase price in 2006 and the deck and seismic retrofit were two of the things that cinched the dealio.

    Did you treat the cut ends of the PT lumber? I just learned that you need to do that or it will rot, never knew, so curious if that's something you learned in 9 years since the original was built.

    • @woodworksbysnyder3456
      @woodworksbysnyder3456 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Technically the treated wood is treated throughout, not just on the outside. But what I did do was seal the cut ends with anchor seal and that is holding up super well. Plus used all stainless steel screws after using the rubber tape or deck joist tape where the screws went in. I was just under the new deck yesterday and all joists and beams and posts are looking fantastic!

    Remarkable work. How did you determine the height to cut the post to ensure the joists are leveled on the beam?

    • @woodworksbysnyder3456
      @woodworksbysnyder3456 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Lots of string and string levels. It will depend if you have joists running up against the beams with joist hangers or if, like mine, you set the joists on top of the beams. So run your line on the height of your joists and start subtracting measurements to get to you ultimate cut of posts then beams then joists and then finished decking. Measure a bunch so you only cut once.

    What’s your deck size and how did you decide how far from the house to set your first post for your beam?

    • @woodworksbysnyder3456
      @woodworksbysnyder3456 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roughly 20’ wide and about 16’ out from the house. So the first posts for the beam closest to the house was dependent on the overhead pavilion that sits on top of the deck. I had to set the pavilion 5’ from the house. So those posts and beams are roughly 5’ from the house. Maybe a little more because the pavilion roof line or overhang/eave needed to be 5’ from the house. Reasoning is if I connected the pavilion or covered portion to the house, it is considered an attachment or enclosure and therefore my setback becomes 20’ from the property line. That would have left me a 6’ deck basically. So no go on that front. The loop hole was, no attachment to house and ingest the deck size that works. But there is a dash from inside the house to under the covered pavilion portion when it rains. 😊
