Building & restoring Toyota Land Cruisers since ‘96
OEM Restoration | 1988 FJ62 Toyota Land Cruiser
Our latest build is for a customer from California who wanted an OEM restoration + a few key upgrades. In addition to stripping the Land Cruiser down and rebuilding it to a condition better than when it rolled off the factory floor in '88, we also handmade a bespoke interior with subtle styling that's intended to look like it could've been from the factory.

LS is cool but question, why put the brain and heart of a Chevy instead of putting in a 200 series V8 to keep the reliability up to par? Assuming reliability is still what people want in a resto….
Loved the built very much and loved the attention to details that you give to the built, could you pls let us know how much a built like this cost, very interested
Thanks! Feel free to email info@tlc4x4.com to discuss what you're looking for. Our builds start at $250k, but can vary according to your goals.
What computers are you guys using to run the engine and transmission
6L-80-E transmission?
What’s the mpg just wondering lol
Good lord
What’s the suspension and tire set up?
if I win the lottery, you won't see any lambos in my driveway, it'll be at least one of these
nice to be able to spend 250k on something this well executed....I can't but it sure would be nice...
105 series 😂
This thing is sick
昭和平成の日産サファリに挑戦してほしい。今となっては金持ち連中の車になってしまった。
😍💯😍
What did i just watch? A waste of life and time
don’t hate bro. you wasted time just writing that comment
You witnessed an awesome Toyota. I was fortunate enough to see this in person. Absolutely stunning.
Should have kept the chrome.
Where can we buy some of these parts
We don't sell any parts - we make them exclusively for our builds.
Cool 💪🏾
Great job!
My father had two of these as a kid. We had a 82 then a 88. These are such Iconic trucks. Great Build.
Beautiful build!
Cool
Any Cummins R2.8/ZF 8HP80 swaps in the future? Looking to compare your work with others before committing. TIA
You guys do beautiful work. This is identical to my '90 model only much nicer.
I see a lot of videos saying that people use the LS3. Watched a video yesterday saying it is one of the the worst LS engines. I always wondered why people to stick with Toyota for the engine. Is it a parts thing, or people aren't actually Toyota fans. Nice build.
60 is best looking but 100 is probably the best
What size are those Amp Research Steps?
My guess is lincoln navigator console I own a 1995 fj-80, just got it. It's rough shape now, but I'm mechanically slowly bringing it to life. If I ever decide to complete rebuild it I'll keep y'all in mind.
Great stock looking stuck. Still prefer the mountain hatch rear tailgate cover to the carpet. sweet build
80 or 100, tanks for sharing your job
I have two questions: why the LS swap seems to be a popular mid instead of using the OEM engine and supercharge it? The second question is why not put the later TOYOTA v8 engines from cars such as Toyota Tundra?
Have you seen availability for any of the factory OEM engines and transmissions? Lots of parts NLA. They can buy a brand new LS3 and 6L80e from Chevrolet. Swapping in Toyota engines and transmissions require a lot more trickery to get working (i.e. electrical engineering / computer engineering / computer programming) to get the modules working. Most shops don't actually have those kinds of skills.
I believe Ward himself said something like trying to allocate Toyota crate motors was much more difficult than the plentiful GM crate options that also had warranties. on top of the already wide aftermarket support for the LS and LT motors that helps ease the swap into these Toyota chassis, parts availability is simply more available for the American V8 and any mechanic worth their salt can work on a chevy V8 as for the first question, it's literally not worth the time and money to look for an older OE supercharger, rebuild it and install it along with the old OE motor. as well as the money to performance also wouldn't be worth it. to get base LS3 power from the supercharged OE SC engine would be astronomical when a chevy V8 already has that power and a GM trans can handle it just fine.
The new one is pretty cool
How much are they?
225$
225k$
What’s even better about AMP Research steps is they won’t sell you parts that fit your old Toyota, even though they exist here. It’s awesome!
🇯🇵🎌MADE PARTS ENGINE ETC SHOULD HAVE BEEN USED FOR THE RESTORATION OTHERWISE ITS COMPLETELY NON GENUINE LANDCRUISER🤡
I'm guessing Land Rover Discovery console, but I'm pretty late.
The charger console is fascinating. Got me wondering if I had the ingenuity to make that work.
Console is a Lexus I think maybe Rx
I was hoping there was a boxer motor under the hood to keep with Porsche theme😊
@mnshttnt nailed it! The center console came out of a Dodge Charger. Almost plug and play, but did require some modifications.
What year was it?
That's awesome.
Looks like a Challenger console
Yeah it’s a dodge brand console. I’ve seen them in the 2015 generation model chargers
You're close - and while the Challenger may have the same console, this came from a Charger!
Unbelievable FZJ!!!
Dodge charger
You got it! Good eye. Email mbest@tlc4x4.com with your shirt size and address and we'll get your shirt out to you.
VW passat b7 center console?
Kinda looks like a first gen Sequoia or Tundra console...
Beautiful and tasteful 80! We need more 80s like this in the world!
All that work to only put in a non Toyota engine is weird to me. It makes a Land Cruiser not a Land Cruiser. Plus those made in china aftermarket wheels look like they belong on a jeep. Oem all day. No factory lockers too? Not my money.
Shut up
I did think it was kind of weird he glossed over the wheels to not mention the brand. Looks like Mickey Thompson which is a classic choice, but based on the centercap from the brief look I'm going to guess they are ION 171. But didn't mention the wheel size or actual tire size. Just the vague 33" sizing. Maybe they were embarrassed by the wheels.
Every Icon product for the last decade + has had an LS. Lighter weight, more power, better mileage, less emissions. It would be more expensive and less maintainable to put a Toyota 4.7 or 5.7 in, and for no benefit over an LS. It hasn't been weird for a long time.
@@lwclarkit’s not a Toyota
Sexy!
The 2JZ swap is interesting for sure. But I have to ask why? Why not turbocharge the 1FZ?
Growing up in my teens, my next door neighbour had one and I have always hankered after one. Hopefully I will get you guys to build me one but with the Toyota 1VD-FTV 4 litre V8 diesel engine. And with bench seats on each side at the back. Hope when I am ready, you guys would be willing to take up the challenge. Excellent work guys. Maximum Respect
