Combination Review: SRAM Apex 1 + GX 10-Speed + 10-Speed Cassette
The SRAM GX 10-speed derailleur and Apex 1 11-speed shifter aren't officially compatible with each other, and the Apex 1 shifter isn't officially compatible with a 10-speed cassette. Even so, I've been using these components on my bike, and this is my review after nearly a year and more than a thousand miles.

      A CUES shifter should work with a Deore rear derailleur on a LinkGlide cassette only. It likely wouldn't work on a traditional 9, 10, or 11-speed cassette. Here's an example of someone getting that combination working: th-cam.com/video/4uywuXx6Lg8/w-d-xo.html

    Hi. If you can have them, can you also do a comparison of the cable pull ratios of Deore RD M6100 and Deore RD M5100? They are apparently identical according to another youtube video but people seem to have varying opinions regarding it. Thank you.

      Thank you for reminding me about the RD-M6100! I have one, I just haven't gotten around to measuring it. I also just measured the RD-M5120, which is similar to the RD-M5100. However, I haven't made a video just yet. I measured the pull ratio to be 1.1. You can see the pull ratio info here: drivetrainbuilder.com/RD-M5120.htm

    I measured 8, 10, HG 11, and LinkGlide cassettes using a height gauge, 123 blocks, and a flat surface. I found LG to have a 4.10mm pitch, HG11 to have 3.76mm, and 10sp to have a 3.95mm pitch. The LG cassettes are slightly wider than HG11, as they will fit on a road 11sp freehub without a spacer whereas an HG11 cassette will not. I personally found the LG Deore XT mech to not be really great at shifting, it is difficult to get the SIS tuned to shift perfectly in all gears, you give up shifting at one end of the cassette or the other. I just installed an electronic derailleur and shifting is absolutely perfect, haven't had any mis-shifts yet.

    This should work the same with Force 1x11 shifter too, right? I bought a pair of those on sale in a haze of enthusiasm a good long while back and haven't found a use for them. If this pans out I'll make my fast bike 1x10 with a secret subcompact granny chainring operated by seatpost friction suicide shifter; goal being using the same bike for lighter bikepacking as well as practice rides.

    The 10spd gx rd also works well in a 11spd setup. I have use the apex shifter with the gx with a 11 to 42 11spd cassette.

    • @boothsbikeprojects
      @boothsbikeprojects 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's great info! I'd love to see a video of your setup. I actually just tried this with the old Sunrace 11-42 11-speed cassette that was originally on my bike. It worked pretty well in the stand after cranking down on the b-tension screw. I didn't really expect this to work. I think it shifted better than I thought it would because the jockey wheel was so far from the cassette most of the time. I counted more than 4 rollers between the small cogs and the jockey wheel, when typically that number is 2.5 or 3. That extra distance seems to improve the chain angle enough to make it shift well, but isn't such a high distance that it failed to shift at all.

    • @jsca470
      @jsca470 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ it is a setup I did in the past but now have a rival 11spd rd that is specified for a 10-42 cassette. The main reason I went for the 10spd gx was price at the time. The main disadvantage with using the 10spd gx rd with apex shifter was having to use an inline barrel adjuster.

      Ircc, Force10 and Red10 claim not to but I personally didn't find that to be the case. In fact, I found the low limit screw on my Red10s was more of a suggestion than a true limit. That unexpected shift up had struck me enough times at the crux of the climb that I developed a habit of holding the the lever in to buy a moment before the bite. Turns out that putting all the torque on pedals while holding lever is one of those 'doesn't show up in the stand' moments. Ended that ride and wheel real quick. As impressive as the 3x combo is here, my hat's off for fixing the Sram's nasty little 'feature'. To be fair to Sram though, my set had seen some abuse. A couple of trees and one car likely had them rattled, and I suspect they were looking for revenge.

    • @nicozegers
      @nicozegers 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's a "feature" of the doubletap mechanism used on all sram mechanical road shifters. The solution is easy once you get used to it: Whenever you try to shift against the limit into an unexisting gear, just need to keep pushing until you feel a second click. If it feels too hard you need to loosen a bit the limit screw.

    • @jsca470
      @jsca470 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I have been using sram double tap for a while now on 1x setups. I have not had an issue with the end of the cassette. It is probably easier to keep track of where you are on the cassette with 1x11. Took me a while to consistently be able to not grab more that one gear when shifting to an easier to gear. Having said that I have not had that issue I will probably do it on my ride tomorrow 😂

    If that GX rear derailleur has a clutch the 39 tooth is probably the limit. Though they look alike the non-clutch and clutched versions have different limits. I've tested both versions with a 2X GX set up on my stock Surly Bridge Club (11-40). The clutched version hung up on the 40t yet the non-clutched version works (also beyond spec). So goat link going beyond these cassettes. BTW I wouldn't be surprised if Shimano left well enough alone regarding backwards compatibility. If shops found themselves buying Cues components trying to integrate them into shifting set ups only to find things don't work ( built-in obsolescence). It would add to the #thanksshimano exposure. I haven't looked but perhaps there's a compatibility chart. Much appreciation for your work👍.

      Thank you for sharing your real-world experience! I think Shimano has made it clear that CUES is replacing lots of down-market groupsets and making it so shops don't need to carry so many SKUs. • @boothsbikeprojects
      @boothsbikeprojects หลายเดือนก่อน

      Interesting idea! The trick is actually installing the new plastic piece. Shimano parts are not known to be easy to disassemble without destroying them. You might be better off simply cutting the stop. Besides, I'm not sure a 12-speed CUES shifter would be very useful. The 11-speed cassette is already very wide, so I'm not sure there is space for a 12th cog.

    • @levrider9558
      @levrider9558 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@boothsbikeprojects Right, in this thought experiment, we'd have to shoehorn another cog between the biggest cog and the spokes. 12 speed cassettes would be of limits, as their spacing is narrower. Maybe someone somewhere at some time made a derailleur with a fitting pull ratio, but now we are already in finicking territory, where we could just use friction shifters if we want it to be difficult. But I still think it's interesting that we could, in theory, have 17 positions, and it's only a plastic cover who hinders us from using them.

Because old 9 speed MTB Shimano derailleurs with high ratio 1,7 and shifters with low 2,5mm cable pull was very sensitive to hanger straightness, quality of cables and temperatures too.

      I almost put cues derailleur on a 9 speed non cues shifter😂

    Righto, so it seems that Dynasys and Linkglide are likely the same pull ratio, and we are entering back to (some) Shimano cross compatibility (at least at the MTB end of the spectrum) ...

    Impressive! I tried to do the same for Microshift's Advent X, but my setup was much less precise. I ended up with garbage data with too much noise. I see that you've measured Advent X already.

      Yeah, it's tricky to set up a rig to track the jockey. I want to CAD up my rig and do a video on it.

    How do you determine where the second largest and second smallest cogs sit in the derailler's range?

    • @boothsbikeprojects
      @boothsbikeprojects หลายเดือนก่อน

      I really should do a video on this since a visual explanation would be helpful. Basically, I know where the jockey wheel is in relation to the mounting point/dropout. I assume the dropout is about 8mm wide, and that the smallest cog is inset about 3 mm more. To find the second smallest cog, I just add the cog pitch (ex 4.05mm for LinkGlide). For the second largest cog, I just keep adding the cog pitch for each gap in between.

    Nice! I am really curious, the Campy rep told me they changed the Ekar GT pull ratio, so the shifters and derailleur are no longer compatible. Ekar has always been finicky for me, I wonder if the cable pull was increased across the board, or maybe just the big cog

    Hello would this shifter work with 10 speed cues u6000 derailleur? I only want 9 speed and need clutch function.

      I'm sorry I can't give you an answer on this, since I haven't measured that specific derailleur. I think there is a good chance it will work, but I don't have any direct evidence to say yes or no.

    interesting to see so much variation in the middle gears. Do you think this has something to do with the 13 speed cassette? Or is it just manufacturing tolerance?

    • @boothsbikeprojects
      @boothsbikeprojects 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question! I would like to know the answer as well. Unfortunately I don't have access to an Ekar 13-speed cassette to measure it, and I don't feel like spending $240+ to buy one.

    May I suggest place a short explanation description in areas like deraileur pull ratios that explains what that means to those that don’t understand Example: Deraileur pull ratio is the amount the deraileur moves relevant to the amount of cable pulled by the shifter. Couple this with your desired shifter to see if you get the right amount of shifting width to accomodate your cassette spacing. It may be ok to have a shifter exceed the number of cogs on your cassette but make sure you adjust the limit screws to prevent mover shifting into the dropout or the spokes. It is recomended you test the combination thoroughly befor committing ,to any setup.

      So, are we pretty confident that CUES, Dynas-Sys and SRAM MTB11/12 RDs have similar pull ratios at around 1.1?

    SRAM introduced these rd designs with their 1X systems. To me they seemed counter-intuitive. My first thought was why would any manufacturer drop the slant from the parallelogram (pun intended)?. The early marketing graphics that show how the it works are really too simple in explanation. It's now 10 years since introduced. Does an observation of built-in yaw mean that the parallelogram is uneven - so slightly trapezoidal? There's a lot going with these mechanisms. Great work - interesting and engaging stuff to follow.

    • @boothsbikeprojects
      @boothsbikeprojects 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I assume that the parallelogram is indeed more like a trapezoid. I don't see any other way to produce the yaw. That being said, I've noticed this yaw on a lot of slant-parallelogram derailleurs as well.
