NW Cairngorm and Speyside way all terrain bike loop
A great double loop in the NW Cairngorms, that can be done in two loops, or as an overnight bikepacking trip. You can start wherever suits you best. I have put the route up on OS Maps, it has the same title as this video. the start point on OS Maps is a couple of hundred meters up from the Colymbridge end of Loch Morlich. You can Download the GPX from there, if you wish to give it a go. You don't need to carry much in the way of food, as there are a lot of possible stops for both food and accommodation along the route. So this route should be possible almost all year round. if you can get booked in somewhere. Book in advance or come out of season would be my suggestion. I hope you enjoy this as much as we did.
Cheers and thanks for watching.

Cracking!! love it !
Nice!!
belter of a ride!! well done guys!
Wish I watched your video before I went up there today! Went too far to the right at the bottom, and pretty much went around tiers 1 and 2 on the right. Trying to go up on the rock whenever I could, and ending up going back down with great dufficulty, as it was all wet and slimy. Tier 3, I went up the grassy gully right through the middle, as it looked most doable (another mistake, all loose, wet, muddy and just as steep!). Then the last 30-40 metres I moved over to the left and aroud tbe corner, and climbed up on good rock finally. 2 hours from car park to the bealach below Stob Dearg, and absolutely knackered! I can see, how this can be a fantastic scramble though! I'm lucky enough to live an hour and a half away, so will be back!
Oh man, that was a bad mistake. Yes you really did miss out on a fantastic scramble. Glad you managed to find a good bit at the end at least. Good you made it off safe too. Scramble season for me at that level is almost now, its getting to be too unpredictable unless we get a decent spell of weather. Thanks for watching though, I hope you enjoyed it.
@@ianshaw6112 I enjoyed both the season and your video 🤪 finding myself up 7-10 metres of slippery rock that I was just abot able to makd my way up, and then having to work my way down was scary. Hanging onto a shit slippery hold, and nothing further down, I thought "I have to make a move, or I'll just tire out and fall". Another experience though, don't go up stuff you're only just about able to go up. Hit a wall, and you may not make it down. Sure will check your vids before hitting more scrambles from "scrambles of Lochaber"🤘🤘
Brilliant Ian ..Fantastic stuff mate 😍👌🏻..Not done that section before..Looks brilliant 😍..That’s the best video I’ve seen for the moves on the Curved ridge crux😁👌🏻 It was great meeting you on Sunday and thank you so much for helping with Franks puncture..Hopefully catch you up the hills at some point. Cheers Robert( Murchie)
Thanks Robert. Good to know you too guys made it out okay. Glad I could have been of assistance. I trust you had no more issues. Thanks again and I hope we'll bump into one another again. Cheers
@@ianshaw6112 That was us sorted Ian all the way back😁👍 ..No more issues. Defo mate..That would be great 😁
Hi Ian that was a fantastic scramble, and yeh a bit scary when your buddy slipped. Might get round to doing kedge route some day, about my comfort zone when scrambling. Would also like to say thanks for helping with the puncture I got up in the Fisherfields on Sunday, your help was much appreciated and I hope you had a fantastic scramble up there. A new subscriber👍 ATB Frank
You're very welcome for the help. It was the very least I could do for you. I trust you made it out without any more glitches. Ill be scanning the hills for you, on the promise of that pint Frank hahaha. ATB to you too, hopefully we'll bump into one another again at some point. Take it easy.
@@ianshaw6112 cheers Ian, yeh we managed back ok, just a couple more offs with the bike🤣🤣 yeh might bump into one another at some point Ian👍 My vid of our FF trip is out tomorrow night, you get a mention in that as well 🤣🤣 ATB Frank
The Ben Alder trail is one I definetely want to do although not sure about the uphill hike section just before cottage, maybe consider going back way the same route in, looks like an excellent ride none the less thanks for sharing Ian 😁🤙
that might just be an excellent call. As an overnighter it would be great call. I hope you give it a try.
Is it like this every year ?
No Unfortunately. it comes and goes very quickly. you have to be in the right place at the right time. Last winter was dreadful. however 2013 we were still boarding in June.
I really don't know why D Gully Buttress only gets one star as it's brilliant.. Here's a bit of video after we climbed Hell's Wall - th-cam.com/video/3rZDrq8tHVg/w-d-xo.html - which is definitely Severe!
No I'm not sure why either. The route quality is very good. It is mostly secure good holds.
yeah, it should be a 2 star at least. I watched that short video last night actually. Have you been up north butress?
@@grainneshaw3164 Yeah - I took the left hand exit at the top (which was interesting).
@@tommybinson There were definitely few runners. I got four pieces in including one off the belay (and a very dodgy sling on a 5mm spikes to exit). And yeah, final exit pitch is quite thin for a scramble. Definitely Diff, thin and exposed. I've been told a left line on the last pitch might be steeper but more secure.
Beautiful and breathtaking!
It really is a very special place.
That route is affectionately known as the Bealach Bawbag route, its a dissapointing slog up to the Bealach and and quite a crappy descent to the Loch and a bogfest alongside it. Much better loop from the chapel at the estate house and and follow the shore of Loch Ericht to Ben Alder Cottage and up to the Bealach Dubh.
Looks like it definitely deserves two stars. Hope you enjoyed the apple.
hahaha, you noticed it in his bag. I'm sure he enjoyed it.
That looks like a brilliant combined route. That sky is awesome. Great video.
Thank you, that was back before the weather broke.
Man, that weather.
Big miles done there, I've done some sections, but not that sizeable loop...excellent video 😊
Thank you so much. It is very easy doing the miles. It is very easy to get distracted and forget your STILL pedalling up hill lol.
Fantastic video Ian, thanks for sharing. Do you have a .gpx file of your day you could add a link to ?
Hi Colin, I just took it off of my Paper maps. I'm not very computer savvy, sorry.
@@ianshaw6112 No problem Ian, I did them on 1st August, and had a great day apart from the face plant off the bike when the front wheel went into one of the drainage culverts across the path 🙄
Looks like a really enjoyable ridge. Wowee cloud inversion, so good.
It's well worth the walk out, probably Less than a kilometre
I've been to Rum twice - might have to go again!
First time on rum, but definitely want to go back. Fabulous place.
It really is the best rock. We will definitely be going back.
Did this in the snow and honestly thought was going to die 😂 first mountain climb. Took us 5 hours to get to the summit. 9.5 to get back to the car
Nice to hear some real bag pipe music
Thanks for sharing, I’m planning on doing this in July for my first ascent of Ben Nevis.
Inspiring
how long did it take to cycle out from the summit
Just over half an hour, but that's right back to Craignure
the old wire bridge was a right of passage......shame it has gone!!
Great vid looks so fun
great wee video
You pick some amazing routes. There can’t have been many that have trod before you. Whilst it didn’t look super technical it certainly looked as if it was greasy and in that sense way more of a challenge. What a little gem. Thanks for sharing.
Looks to have been stormy up there before you visited. Looks like you were cycling at an angle at times along the forest track.
We had smiles on our faces watching this knowing the thrill you had doing that, can't wait to get back up there roll on January 👍🏻 great video sending love, peace and good energy ❤️🙏🏻
Top speed of 46kms to shabby 👌
Not too shabby I meant
I doubt it was on the really steep bit though lol.
nice
Bloody hell, fair play to you both, the exposure on the crux was severe and that slip was scary AF. Takes composure and courage to immediately just crack on after that. I would have definitely taken you up on your offer of roping up.....as a mid level scrambler theres no way I would dare to attempt that without protection. Awesome weather you had as well! Great vid. (Cant help but feel if you titled it 'Close call on Ben Nevis' or some other such clickbaity title you'd get an extra 50k views)
You might be right. Yeh Olivier is a pretty cool customer. He would never have slipped if he wasn't trying to rush. My advice to all is, stay cool never rush it. Also never go up anything you don't think you can get down from, if your not using ropes. We practice down climbing at our local wall all the time.
Always wondered what the crossing from the Bealach Dubh to Loch Ossian would be like... and now I know, you rode it so I don't have to, cheers! Do you reckon there's any value in riding this route in the opposite direction and taking the push as an uphill slog to get that nice descent on the other side?
100%, definitely. Id say the descent to the bothy will be absolutely amazing.
Bloody hell that section from 08:58 isnt messing around, proper G3! Was thinking of looking up this route until I saw that section lol. Great video!
Get someone to take you out on it. its maybe not as bad as you think. the rock is fantastic, really really grippy. You should give it a try if you have a friend to go with that is maybe a little more capable. I don't think you'll regret it.
@ianshaw6112 Thanks for the response, going to try to blag my climber friend to come with me.....
Great video, looks like a good route. Really enjoying your vids working through the Glen Coe scrambles. Have you any plans to try No3 Buttress on nam Beith? One thats caught my interest but i dont know anyone whos done it. Anyways, great content lads.
No, I haven't looked at it yet. maybe we'll look into that next year. Do you know what grade it is?
there is a couple of scrambles on stob coire nam bieth. we'll see how the weather is next summer.
Wish the go pro didnt distort the picture so much.
Great stuff.... It reminds me when I did the 5 ridges on one sunny day years ago..... I was knackered doing Castle Ridge as it was the last though I didn't follow you're route. 👍
Brilliant video thanks Buachaille Etive More is my favourite hill I have climbed it but never done curved ridge or what you guyes have done so thanks from an old guy
Yeah it is a great hill. So many routes up it too. Handy for us too as we live in the Fort. Hopefully get up the curved ridge before the winter.
Awesome!
Awrite there crackin vid, stob coire nan lochan my fave mountain I always ascend the ridge up.. Top of the nan lochan trail then left or western ridge up to the summit bk down the eastern crest to the bealach . Looking at these gullies I fancy upping it a bit.. Would u recommend dorsal arete or summit buttress to start off.. Cheers
well defineatly summit butress before trying dorsel fin. needs to be really dry, it had been dry for a while when we done this but it was still damp. Dorsel fin is a moderate, think this was a grade 2.
It looks like a playground! I'll save it for a dry day though.
Definitely. There will be loads more options on a nice dry sunny day. It should be in the sun in the morning, shaded in the evening.
Great video Ian, looked like a great route 🚴♂️👍
It was a lot of fun. Thank you.
Hi Ian, great video, track looked knarly in places. How long?
Which part? The walking part is about 5k. The single track was about 7k
Another great video Ian 🚴♂️👍
Great video Ian 🚴♂️👍
Thanks 👍
This video answered my fears! Didn't think it would be easy getting between paths over the pass and you confirmed it You can do a different loop if you head to Ben Alder cottage and climb back up Bealach Breabag but it's a rough climb. The decent from the lochan back towards Culra bothy is lovely though.
I wanna do that soon. Thanks
Well Done Ian loved your video
Thanks 👍
Done the whole ridge on a Saturday and the sisters on a Sunday 40 years ago real hot day on the Saturday not to bad on the Sunday came off the sisters down the scree near the Shiel Bridge hotel nice memories also done the forcan ridge and the Saddle man I love that area
Yeah Kintail is a fabulous area, quite a few scrambles and ridges to do there too. That's the 2nd time along that ridge. I'd like to do it again in perfect low light conditions.
Great to get out in the back of beyond in Scotland, need to plan a big bike ride somewhere before year is out, thanks for the inspiration Ian, beatutiful scenery and all the best.
Well there are plenty places to go, lots of maps to pour over. Enjoy your big adventure. Thank you.
I need to get in there. Great looking scenery.
