make an adjustable self-tie bow tie part 3
Here is the thrilling conclusion of my video series on how to make an adjustable self-tie bow tie.
I make these out of rose fabric (cotton) to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis research to help my niece (the nickname for CF is 65 Roses- did you notice they sound the same?). The basic template, which I have modified (watch the video!) comes from Sew Like My Mom, and excellent blog: sewlikemymom.com/mens-bow-tie-tutorial/ . My addition is to make it adjustable to fit all sizes (assembly will be in part 3)
In this video: Pressing and assembling your bow tie. Enjoy!!
PS the adjustors I used can be found at the SewingSupplies Etsy Store:

My latest project: spiral scrubbies for a shop in Hawaii. Thought I'd take you along as I make one, so you can see the process! Many knitting techniques involved, including provisional cast on, knit 2 together, knit front and back, kitchener's garter bindoff, and cool shaping techniques. Ask me if you'd like a shorter video on any particular technique.

      Hi Kaye- this is a video I made many years ago, I do not have access to the pattern anymore, the link I used may not exist anymore, and I do not know the measurements of what I made anymore. Some of the other comments may address your questions? Apologies I cannot help, I haven’t used my sewing machine in years.

    What a painful way to make a bow tie. Best to iron on the interfacing to the reverse side of the material then lay the finished size of the bow tie pattern on the fabric and trace the outline on the interfacting. Then all you have to do is sew the stitching right on the line to make it perfect. Once that is done simply cut out the bow tie from the fabric leaving an 1/8 to 3/16 inches all the way around. Next reverse the bow tie and use a knitting needle or semi-pointed chop stick to smooth out the edges. Best way to secure the back is to use a 3 piece clip readily available at a sewing shop. If you use this type of closure or even velcro you can tie the bow tie and never have to untie it again. Simple undo the clip or velcro and it's ready to wear next time. This is a big time saver since you dont have to painfully retie the bow tie each time you want to wear it.

  • @jfhspike
    @jfhspike 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Terrific instructions. For those who asked: the finished tie, despite the size of the pattern, comes about about 2-2,5" wide, with the strap being about 1/2-3/4-inch wide. And the "swoopiness" of the bow isn't nearly as extreme as that of the pattern. A hint to those who were confused like me: it's easy to get the impression that you need two "long" pieces of interfacing, but you actually need one long and one short; you apply interfacing to the wrong side of one long piece, and the wrong side of one short piece. I also find it's worth backstitching at the "thin end" before you invert, as the stress of inverting may make stitches loosen up in some slippery cloths like silk. Another suggestion: if you have some Tenara or other invisible but strong thread, you can lay a piece down the middle between the two right sides, and sticking out from both ends of the tie, and when you're stitching, make sure it's really snug-ly held in place at the wide end of the tie (a loop with its TWO tails sticking down the middle might be a good choice). Then you can evert the tie by pulling on the thread to drag the fat end out through the narrow end without having the extra volume of the chopstick in there, and trim off the "puller" thread when you're done. Last but not least: if you can get a piece of plastic that's a bit like a tongue-depresser, but much longer, you can insert that as a way to flatten out the "strap" portion of the tie while you iron it -- it goes amazingly quickly. And a final hint: if you're doing this with any cloth that doesn't have a good deal of structure, cutting your pieces on the bias is a huge help; if you try to do this in silk without cutting on the bias, you'll just go crazy (unless you're way more talented than I am!).

      Hi, I'm making a self-tied bow tie for 19" neck. I started with 39" length. Because the design on the cotton fabric is 90 degrees from the selvage plus it doesn't provide much stretch, should I add add extra inches to the bow tie?

    When you printed this, did you scale them image or keep as is. I printed the original but it seems so big lol but ive never seen a bowtie template so is the pattern spouse to be this big?

    • @bexterdesigns5532
      @bexterdesigns5532 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used it the size it printed out, on cardstock so I could keep reusing it. It may seem big, but if you sew a 1/4" in from the edge as a seam, it sizes up nicely, it will be 1/2 inch smaller than the pattern when you turn it inside out.

    I was thinking of trying to knit a scrubbie since I e already crocheted a few but this looks like a whole lot more trouble so I think I'll stick with crochet. I've made them with scrubby yarn I wouldn't have thought of using acrylic yarn. I think I will try it.

    Is there somewhere you can buy JUST the adjuster clips? I can't seem to find anything but the 3-piece sets that includes the hook and eye that would be on a pre-tied tie and just one adjuster. Suggestions?

      @bexterdesigns5532 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ian- if you check the description on my video you can find a link to where I got just the adjusters on Etsy- it was a pack of about 50 or so, but did not include the hook you are talking about. She may have smaller packs......

    Stevie- be careful to keep the stitches at a tight 1/4" from the edge- it is tough for me to turn as well, which is why I use the chop stick and knitting needle to help me turn. I also inch it down slowly, especially on the longer side. I'll start at the bottom, push up a little, work what I've tuned down, then push it through a little more, work it down, etc. if you try to push too much through at once, it will get stuck. The closer you get to the top opening, the tougher it gets. Once a little gets through. Grab it, and work the end down. If I get a chance, I'll try to make another video!
