New Bedford Preservation Society Grove and Hawthorn Tour
Join Bruce Barnes on this New Beford Preservation Society walking tour as we view historic houses on Grove, Hawthorn, and adjacent streets. Many of these are seldomly seen and represent a fascinating slice of New Bedford history and architecture.

00:26 - Grinnell Mansion, 1897
04:57 - 1-3 Anthony Street, Greek Revival w/Victorian Porch, 1843. Built on land that was once the Delano Mansion. Interestingly ornamented Colonial Revival built to meet the needs of the exploding textile industry, 1897
09:13 - Dr. Tierney house, Gothic Revival, 1840s, Clinton Place development built on land from the Dr. Abbe / Gilbert Russel mansion in 1897.
10:45 - Best paint job, Victorian 1890s w/Gothic and Queen Anne features. . The William J. Rotch Gothic Cottage, 1846.
12:57 - Colonial Revival from the 1890s with fancy stone wall.
14:36 - Massive Colonial Revival with gambrel, built by Frederick Stetson in the 1890s. His wife, Helen, was a Prescott, the family who gave the Tiffany stained glass mural to the First Unitarian Church.
16:21 - The William D. Howland mansion, built in the 1880s. He was the founder of the Howland Mills in the South End. He committed suicide in 1897 when he ran into financial difficulties. The mansion was built on land that was originally owned by his parents, Matthew and Rachael Howland.
18:18 - Specacular Queen Anne Victorian on the corner of Hawthorn and Ash. Very nicely ornamented and a good example of Queen Anne features.
20:25 - Bluestone walkway example. New Bedford began flagging their walkways in the 1820s with bluestone. After the Civil War, the city moved to flagging with concrete.
22:52 - 1830-40s Greek Revival house was once the home of Basil Brewer, the influential owner of the Standard Times newspaper.
24:56 - Louis Destremps designed house. Louis Destremps was a well known South Coast architect that originally came to New Bedford to finish the work on St. Anthony of Padua.
27:09 - Nat Smith designed shingle-style duplex house built in 1897 for Agnes Wise.
