Convertible Top Cylinders and Lines Replacement
มุมมอง 26K2 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video I put the rebuilt motor and pump assembly back on my 68 Cutlass convertible. Next, it’s a total replacement of the power top pieces to include hydraulic cylinders and hydraulic lines. While it didn’t start out this way it ended that way. It really wasn’t that bad to replace the necessary parts. So, if you want to see what’s involved please watch the video. You can buy the cylinder...
Convertible Motor and Pump Rebuild
มุมมอง 13K2 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video I demonstrate how I refurbished my convertible top pump and the steps I took to inspect and freshen up the other half the electric motor. The pump rebuild was easy. The electric motor inspection and cleaning was decent but just requires a little of time and patience. I still feel this can be completed by most do it yourselfers.

My issue on my '77 GP is the fast idle is fine but recently I can't get the idle to step down until its just about completely warmed up. If you can offer a suggestion on what to check let me know!
If yojr dash is lit up lile Christmas and or power steering jerking pulsating while turn this may be the culprit
You the man Dan !!!
This guy puts the serpentine belt on incorrectly. He has the belt grooves against the smooth idler pully on the right side. He didn't follow the diagram he digs up. Actually there is a diagram in the owners manual. It shows the mistake He made.
I just replaced the Coil Packs + Sparks plugs Now I have Code indicating Fuel Pump
How much did you spend on the 4 brand Injectors?? We have the Turbo same year
Yeah, the gremlins start showing up when you think an issue is simple. It happens, but it's good to have seen it checked from top to bottom! Great job!
You skipped right over the hardest part. Getting the alternator out after disconnecting it? It pretty much makes the video useless!
Brother, you gotta let that thing heat up a little bit so the solder will melt. What are you doing?
Awesome video, thank you! As a fellow Floridian and first-time old Mustang owner: I am having the same issue. If you've driven around this blistering hot summer, how have you found the spacer to have worked so far?
Thank you for making this video. A lot of great information.
thank you .Trying to pull and save a speed-o and clock from a 1968 Cutlass S ragtop that what is left will get scrapped soon. I hope to find them a new home for them .
Just completed this job. Taking out the bolt on the top right of the alternator makes for a slightly easier removal, however, it is still a major pain to remove with A/C lines in the way. After enough maneuvering, it will come free
Doesnt anybody do a front bench seat on a 66 chevelle?
My first time attempting interior every othwr video made it seem impossible thank you for this gem!
Mine just started to sound like that I thought it was just a pulley
Nice job! Do the posi once you get your trans sorced .! Thx
Where the 3rd bolt come from, bottom?
Man I just went through the same process with my 2012 had my buddy run his scanner and cylinder 2 and 4 were misfiring changed spark plugs and coils among other things that needed replacing and now she idles fine. Thanks for the video. Not to many people explain things to people who no nothing about mechanical stuff 😅
What else did you replace? I have a misfire on 2 & 4 too. Ive replaced the spark plugs the oxygen sensors and the cat it’s not the coils anything specific you replaced that fixed it?
@@itdoesntmeanathing I’m basically experiencing the same thing I’ve replaced the o2 sensors, catalytic converter, fuel injectors and new coil packs and new spark plugs so the only thing i know haven’t replaced the gastric high pressure fuel pump , and I probably need to clean the intake ports so if y’all have any advice im open to hearing them thanks 🙏
I need a rebuild kit for my 2006 Chrysler Sebring Touring Convertible.
1.6 you mean ?
Very helpful vid thanks
I hope you’re not trying to educate people how to do it on the concrete
set it on a piece of cardboard?
Just bought a 68 cutlass as my first restoration project... I'll take all the help and advise I can get, so thanks !
Why the groove in the rotor?
That groove in the rotor was from the factory it was a wear indicator. If that groove was to disappear or get very shallow you would know it was time to replace the rotor.
Did you just pull the fuel rail really hard to get it out after removing the bolt?
I don't remember having to pull excessively to get the fuel rail out. Just make sure you have all four retaining bolts out.
Seems that you put the belt going different side of the pulley instantly after the alternator main pulley/freewheel? (compare on time stamps 4:38 8:59 )
You have a good eye my friend. I did not put that belt on according to the diagram I showed. The belt is now rolling the different side of the alternator's fixed pulley. She just drove it on 1500 mile trip with no issues. But I will give her a heads up if there is any squealing that could be the cause.
Dan do you have a video on how to replace the side panels to get to the cylinders? Also how can u tell if the pump is ok. I’d rather not replace that if I don’t have to
Sorry I don't have any video but you should be able to see all the screws and remove the window handle and then panel comes off. If the pump turns on and spins most likely it can be saved.
Thank you sir very kind of you. You video was very informative thank you
Nice video. It's good to see someone else having to make several attempts to achieve success with these little projects.
It's been 2 years, are those Chinese parts still working?
Yes all is still working with no issues!
Greast Video. I have owned my 72 Supreme Convertible for 30 years and having the same issue. I tried stacking 2 of the composite gaskets together as I had an extra with a rebuilt carb I got with the car. Helped some but did not correct it. I will order this gasket and try it. I see your dashpot is missing the plunger. My original fell apart last year when I rebuilt the my original carb. Can"t seem to find the correct replacement.
Here is the dash pot you need www.ebay.com/p/179055168 . However it wont be useful if you put on the thick spacer like I did. The carb will not align with it anymore.
Just bought new lines for my 67 GS400 due to wear/breakage. Wasn’t going to replace the cylinders but now thinking twice about it. Thanks.
Amazing video..keep it up!
We will!
What did u have to remove to get to there? I see the belt may be off the alternator, what else was removed?
Right we pre-removed the serpentine belt, and air cleaner. I belive that was it.
Hey Dan - GREAT video! Thanks for the much needed education!
You bet!
Seems to be the season to be doing this on the early Velosters. About to do this myself, although I'm doing it in the opposite order you did kinda. LOL. Coils first, then plugs and I'm about to replace the injectors. It was a good video. Thanks for posting it.
Skipped the part where and how many the bolts come out.
Watched all this just to see how you got it in but of course it gets skipped
Great video brother helped put alot!
U joint
Dan, may I ask for a link to these clamps?
I think these are the same only a different color. www.lowes.com/pd/IRWIN-QUICK-GRIP-2-Pack-12-in-Mini-One-Handed-Bar-Clamp/1003172498
68 olds is the best car ever made ,hands down.🤘
Thank you that was great and realistic how it would be for me also great steps and advice to do it all not just one side
Nice ride! Good job nothings ever a bolt on! I'm having a similar issue. I'm wondering what your thoughts are now. Did the spacer help? Did you have to readjust idle mixture? Thank you.
Yes the spacer took care of the carburetor issue when starting a hot car that has been sitting over 10 minutes. I don't remember having to readjust the carburetor after, but I may have, I just don't remember now.
Great job and thank you for the education!
Thanks for watching!
You could have cut the wire at the corners, it would allow you to hogring the remaining holes..great job!
Great idea!
I have an 81 vette. My drivers mirror is just like this. I looked up the mirror in the assembly manual and it does not show those two interior screws. Unfortunately I need to take my door panel off as well as loosening the glass etc…..big project. Do you think that an 81 vette would have those two interior screws? Thank you
I looked around on eBay, I enlarged one of the pictures and it looked to me there is a screw and maybe a hex head nut in their so it definitely looks like you can tighten it up with one or both of those options.
Thank you. I was in hopes of it being easier…. If and when I get it apart, I am going to make sure that I put some lock tight on the screws
You had to remove both bolts to slide it up. No way you just moved the AC lines enough to get it out.
That is true you remove two bolts, one on the top and one on the bottom. Remove one nut on the top then pull the alternator off the stud and through the AC lines. Sorry the video didn't record the actual removal of the alternator :(
I didn't think it was possible, loosen up the bolt holding both lines then pray and pull...
Just did this on my coworkers car. Didn't have to loosen the AC lines. Just had to rotate the alternator in the right spot and it came right out.
