    These SPA rear calipers seem to be on intergalactic backorder from any source other than the dealer (where they cost an arm and a leg). This video is worth it's weight in gold. I was worried about the parking brake but it's great to see that it installs/removes from the piston and caliper easily. I tore off my dust boot to brush the rust off the piston and grease it so it moves again, but the dust boot appeared to be bonded to the caliper instead of sitting in a slot? Can you confirm that I'm wrong?

    • @Northern_
      @Northern_ หลายเดือนก่อน

      So I finished the rebuild and it's not bonded, but instead of the boot being in a secondary slot inside the caliper, it mounts in a slot on the outside of the bore and a metal ring in the rubber boot holds it in place. The metal ring means it doesn't stretch, so installing it was a little annoying. Just need to hook it on the inaccessible side, then work it over both sides while holding it in place, then force the final bit over with a large flathead screwdriver.

    Just had this happen to me on a VW Mk7 rear caliper, but I wound it out manually not knowing what was about to happen. It had 72 bearings, 8 small springs and both the different length long springs. I'm not 100% I didn't drop any, but could see anymore. Anyway, used your video and put it all straight back together, longest spring 6 balls, small spring, 6 balls, etc and finished with the other long spring. Pretty easy once you recover from the initial panic. Thanks👍

      How did you manage to do this? I have a Mk7 Jetta and and the rear passenger rotor sheered apart, flung out the inner brake pad and fully extended the caliper piston. Being a dummy aswell, i took off the EPB motor from the back and thought i was winding it back in when i was really winding it back out. It came apart and shot bearings and springs everywhere. Except unlike in this video they don't have that outer sleeve that goes over the screw. The screw goes directly into the piston. Plus somehow a few of the springs are trashed and some of the ball bearings are smashed. Im starting to think i cant actually fix it. And for some reason you can not buy this caliper anywhere except directly from VW. Ive checked every part store in town and no one carries it and no one can even order it. VW wants 280$ for it so i guess im gonna have to bite the bullet and get a new one.

      @@timgreenfield8879 It works fine actually, i have a MK7 Jetta and just did it manually. Pop the motor off the caliper, wind back the shaft by hand. Open the bleeder valve and the piston retracts with ease. I wouldn't waste the time to try and apply voltage to do it electronically. Its just two simple torque screws to remove the motor and takes like 10 seconds to wind it back by hand.

    Thanks for this heads up. I used it a basis to rebuild my Ford Mondeo electric caliper, which seems to have the same adjustment mechanism. I too made the mistake of using the parking brake manually, with the motor removed, to eject the piston. However, I did catch 100% of the bits by tipping the whole lot into a magnetic tray. There are 70 balls, 10 small springs, 1 long spring and 1 extra long spring. I'm pretty sure the extra long spring goes in first (because I found it at the front of the carnage. I too spent some time rebuilding it, in the same way you did, but I did remove the back plate to get full access to feed the bits in. I decided to put the extra long spring first followed by a group of 8 balls, then a small spring and 6 balls repeatedly, and finally 8 balls and the long spring. I found that applying some downward pressure whilst rotating clockwise, helped in moving the balls down the screw, to make room for the next ones to be fed in. I then made sure the back plate went on in the extact position, that locked the machanism, with the back plate against the adjuster, but without any pressure able to be applied to the back plate by the screw motion. I then put on the holding clip.

    Well, the day this video helped someone fix the same issue is today. I did something similar to Patrick here. I knew you had to take off the back and unwind it manually, which I did, but I kept turning until the piston popped out, well I was like, no problem (well, not exactly, shit my DIY brake job is going to cost $$$$) I'll just push it back in, I did that and nope the handbrake sound was not nice afterwards, it would not engage and warning on the dash. This weekend I finally got the nerve to lift up the car again and take apart the caliper as per your video, and low and behold, that was obviously the issue. I had one more problem, one of the springs was nicely bent up, so I had to fix that first. As you said really wasn't hard to get the 'pusher' back together, the main issue was the piston into the caliper - found a cheat for this, took some plastic, made a funnel to leave it into the boot, then the piston in took the sleeve out and worked like a charme. Thanks for posting this video, it gave me the confidence to give it a try.

    • @kraftwurx_Aviation
      @kraftwurx_Aviation ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen the CFD analysis of the MKII tail, and the problem is the fuselage shape and wing to fuse transition. At high angles of attack, the wing root and low pressure area aft of the cabin create a very disturbed pocket of low-pressure turbulent air that disrupts the flow over the tail. The Beluga mods address the drag for high speed but NOT the low-speed steep angle descent problem. That beautiful coke bottle shape is its own problem. As for the NLF 215...it's fine for clean VFR flying but not so great when dirty with bugs. I think the Lanciar Legacy airfoil addressed some of the behaviors with the outbound airfoil change, but it was not ideal, and they did not address the root issues. Although design is always a compromise, I've been wondering if I could use a different airfoil for an all new wing design and use CFD-based topology optimization to cure the aft low pressure problem and smooth the airflow back to the tail. My advice to all Lancair pilots is to use less steep approaches because they exasperate the tail turbulence issue. The MKII tail is just wide enough to get some of the outer section outside of this high drag turbulent airflow and restore some control authority.

    • @tinolino58
      @tinolino58 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kraftwurx_Aviation the NLF 0215 is more or less s sail plane airfoil. It has to much camber. In cruise it needs lots of reflex. NASA somply screwed up!.. Yeah coke bottle shape was corrected by most Reno racers. Glassair the other design of the same time period uses the GAW-2 which is a aft loaded camber profil with high pitching moment. Again NASA simply screwed up and both designer as well.

    "Beacuse I was a moron..." I love your commentary and I'm so glad you made this video! Because I, too am a moron and did exactly this on my 2019 XC60 when changing the rear pads and rotors - right side replacement went great but on the left side the EPB kicked in with the inner pad removed and overextended the piston as yours did. The piston did not come all the way out of the boot so unfortunately I thought I could simply rewind the EPB manually by using an E12 (I think?) external torx bit to turn the EPB shaft clockwise to unwind it and then re-compress the piston after that. While re-commpressing the piston I heard a number of cracks and pops and the piston would not fully retract to be flush with the boot, so I'm certain that some of the intrernals were damaged and it looks like a replacement caliper is in my future. My first experience changing brakes on an EPB-equipped car - live and learn.

      DA appears to be doing just that. It's embodied the wishlist of every EAA pilot, except price. But has added the Pilatus style landing gear for absorbing harder impacts and rougher strips. And split flaps for low tech, flutter resistant, mild lift enhancement. I personally like split flaps, I like seeing them return. It is going to be HOT though. Much hotter than the moderately-high wing loading might suggest. (For reasons relating to Reynolds number and the chosen airfoil family) And it's Vr is going to be breathtaking at max gross wt. Barely any fun off of grass, I suspect. It's probably tailored more for >4,000' paved.

    Hi Chris, I am just completing my 360 fast build kit that was purchased 4 years ago with most of the major fabrication completed. I purchased a Baluga modification and installed it on the fuselage. I hope you understand how much work you have ahead of you. I suggest you begin a procedure that will allow working on multiple projects in the same time period. For example, wings, control surfaces, and fuselage components. You should be working on all of these components at the same time otherwise building will take forever. In addition, prepping finish components for paint also takes a lot of time. Also, figure out exactly how your antennas, major components of your navigation system will be located and installed. You should know where it all will be located. I would also consider building the backrest of the seat assembly to be removable to make it easier to work in the area behind the seat. Install your landing gear pump behind your seat and not behind the bulkhead behind the luggage space.. I also did not install the header tank in the cockpit instead main tank was enlarged to a max capacity 40 gals. Your videos are outstanding, please continue. The major fun to me about building a complex airplane is to research how other smart builders have solved many of the very complex issues building this airplane. The Dark aero project is also using the same engine you are planning to use but non turbo. You are making the airplane a lot more complicated with this choice. Is your project an R&D project or a build project? Turbo mods on 360's have just not been successful. I would definitely spend a great deal of time researching about how you are engineering the complex issues of turbos and intercooling. I hope your enthusiasm remains intact throughout your project.
