Was the Lincoln Continental Mark V the Ultimate Land Yacht?
The Lincoln Continental Mark V is one of the most iconic luxury cars of the 1970s.
With its designer editions, bold styling, and extravagant features, this car defined an era of elegance and excess.
Today, we take a closer look at what made it stand out!

Bring it back. Add 29 computer modules and a 3500 lb battery pack! Rip out the dash and put a 42" wide touch screen in there.
4 front wheels may have been necessary for the weight of the nuclear reactor...
Worked on these back in the day doing Collision Repair one of the easiest well-engineered bodies you can ever have to repair,, much easier than the really complicated Cadillacs...
What famous people had one?
President Trump had one!
It’s like you don’t understand the concept of worlds fairs or concept cars. They are about exploring new ideas and pushing what is possible. Your snide disdain shows that you will publicly punish any new idea.
My 1970 Eldorado is over 18 feet long 😂
Please think about the rest of the world and add the metric units of measurement. Thank you in advance.
My 2012 Expedition EL is 18.4' long, has a modular engine, and included gps. I would be so happy if I could add a nuclear power plant.
Ah, the way to have a good idea is to have lots of ideas, knowing that most will be discarded anyway. Oh, at 6:17 you played "Waltz of the Flowers" from Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker" - so delightful. Merry Christmas!
I once rode an armoured car with double front axle steering. It went through corners like a dream, in spite of its size and mass. So the theory is actually right. The only problem is that it makes things worse in all other aspects, as there are: size, weight, cost, complexity, efficiency, etc.
About the part on downsizing the Mark V, I made it a bit more dramatic to keep things interesting. From what I found, Henry Ford II wanted to downsize the car, but Lincoln eventually decided to stick with its original size. So it wasn’t exactly like the designers told him off or anything like that. If anyone has more details on this, let me know!
She was a handsome beast at least😎👍🏻
Ahh glass, of course, the best way to block and not magnify the negative effects of UV and bright light in general, as all greenhouses can attest 👍🏻
😂😂😂
Your belittling of engineers' ideas and concepts is truly amazing. Who are YOU to come off this way? Learn to appreciate work from smarter more accomplished people who are (and in this case were) trying to realize their creativity and move the US automobile industry forward.
I try to add some humor to my videos to make them more interesting, and I truly believe the Seattle-ite XXI was a really interesting concept car. But if some of the comments came across as belittling and not funny, I’ll keep it in mind for future videos. Thanks for your comment!
THAT'S THE HOMER !
Did this come before Gerry Andersons Lady Penelope limousine?
From what I know, it came before, as I think the first appearance of Lady Penelope's limousine was in 1965 🚗
This is awesome I'm subbed
Thanks so much for subscribing! I'm really glad you liked the video ✌
Ah yes. Alternative powerplants. EVs with toxic batteries that explode when they get wet or get jostled too much. At least we can be thankful they aren't nuclear! The Seattle-ite bears quite a resemblance to the Panther Six (of which only two were ever made).
Remove the front wheels, move the secondary front wheels back a bit, shorten the rear end part that is behind the rear wheels and make the steering, motor and interior more normal and they could have had a real cool looking sports car.
It was called the 1962 Ford Thunderbird and it was a cool looking sports car. A friend of mine restored one a few years back.
Amazing CAD model! Which software was used?
Lol!
@@martinharris5017 What is so funny? It is an old concept car but the interior pan at the beginning looks like it was created recently with a CAD software! I would like to know which was used : Blender, 3D Max, Maya, touched up by Photoshop?
@@dipling.pitzler7650 Sorry i thought you were joking about the model having been created in CAD. Thanks for clarifying.
@@martinharris5017 No problem..I wonder though why there is no answer..either the CAD/CAI illustration was " borrowed" from another source or the perfect imaging was created by AI using vintage photos ..which to me would be both amazing and disturbing !
@@dipling.pitzler7650 Thanks for your comment! Since I don’t have a lot of time for 3D modeling, what I usually do is search for free models online with a CC BY or CC BY-SA license (which generally means I can use them as long as I give credit). That's why I add the (1) in the left corner of the video when showing the model and include a Google Doc in the description with the proper attribution. Once I have the model, I import it into the software I need, anything from Blender to Davinci Resolve, and then I shoot the shots. This way, I can work with pre-made models and tweak them to fit my vision. The shots are not AI-generated ✌
even today so many people believable in questionable ideas like battery powered vehicles, while completely ignoring all the drawbacks. same with micro nuclear reactors in the 60s. But, it might be funny to see how things evolve if and when nuclear batteries will hit the market. This could bring back the fantastic idea of almost limitless clean power for vehicles.
Interesting perspective! I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how things evolve 🚗
There is nothing questionable about battery electric vehicles, especially since there are millions of them driving around all over the globe. Besides, BEVs came first. It was internal combustion that was questionable since you had to hand crank cars to start them. It was only due to the development of battery powered cars that led to batteries that could crank start dirty, complicated petrol engines.
@@RealBLAlley I refer to batteries as a questionable energy storage in the sense that it is considered by many people as some kind of The holy Grail of sustainability and environmentalism. Electric propulsion for vehicles offers its set of challenges and problems the same as internal combustion engines
@@rieger.design No one thinks that about batteries. That is a strawman argument the EV haters attribute to supporters of EVs. EVs are superior in every way except for the batteries, specifically the size and weight and the recharge times, and to a lesser degree the chemical makeup and availability of said chemicals. The difference is that internal combustion peaked decades ago, but battery technology is improving at an exponential rate.
Did you control one of the tracks, with your console lever? And your wife, the other track with the other level? You would sure need a good cooperation with that type of Panzer-steurung... But certainly crazy with style&flair! If you saw this car (they only made a 3/8 model?) In the days, you would sure think whaaat??? Then the car would not get out of your mind... A good marketing stunt in that way... In every way 100% opposite to a Cybertruck.
Thanks for your comment! Yes, they only made a 3/8 model, but even then, seeing it in person back in the early '60s must have been mind-blowing 🚗
1:02 sec is 4 seconds of Sydney harbour, likely taken on a super 8 mm video camera . Sydney opera house on the left of shot. shot taken while standing next to the stone column to the right is the base pylon footing on the northern side of the Sydney harbour Bridge
Wow, nice catch! It is stock footage, but yep, it's from Sydney. Thanks for your comment!
So much negativity kinda takes all the fun out of it.
I try to add some humor to my videos to keep things fun, and I really do think the Seattle-ite XXI was a cool concept car. If anything I said came off as negative or not funny, I’ll keep that in mind for next time. Thanks for your feedback!
Very innovative, forward thinking indeed, also, check out about another mindlowing Ford concept called „Nucleon“ with this name, you may already guess, totally amazing!
That's another cool concept car by Ford! Might make a video about it in the future 🚗
Most whining commentary of 2024
let's say 2025
My groovy childhood.....thanks for the excellent effort. When I was a young gearhead, the 1968 Hemi Dart was available for purchase from The Chrysler Corporation. It was not street legal, a factory drag car with acid-dipped doors and no window crank mechanisms to trim weight. Straps were included to open the windows. Just a suggestion.....Car and Driver might still have something in their archive, and good luck! Subscriber 18 awaits your next video...
Glad you liked the video, and I really appreciate your comment! The 1968 Hemi Dart sounds like a beast, I’ll definitely check it out. Thanks for subscribing, and I’m excited to have Subscriber 18 on board for the next one 😆🚗
Funny, Formula 1 banned the 4-wheel steering because of its amazing responsiveness & traction giving unfair advantage to those who wished to race with it.
It indeed works. The Tyrell formula 1 car which had it did however not perform that well overall. For the reasons see my own remark. So was it actually banned or is that just an assumption?
Never could reason the 6 wheel layout. Were the designers watching the john player special 6 wheel grand prix car?
I don’t understand it either 😂
You mean the 6 wheel Tyrrell p34- it was done t improve aerodynamics - it also improved the brakes - it was a successful design winning a race and 14 podiums - and also steered exceptionally well - "The steering is so gentle and absolutely free of reaction that you might have thought it was power-assisted!
The Elf Tyrell 6 wheel GP car was from the 70s. So this came first. After came the panther Six which was a real road car. The 4 wheel steer give superb steering and roadholding but at the cost of weight and complexity.
🤔 *The six wheel configuration reminds me a bit of Lady Penelope's custom Rolls Royce, **_Fab 1._*
Nice catch!
or the panther 6, especially the larger v small rear/front wheels size
Looking at the timeline I am quite sure this directly inspired it. Only a few days ago I saw a video about the Thunderbirds on the TV 21 channel where you can actually see super 8 video’s of the Anderson’s visiting an US fair looking for inspiration. I’d have to check if it was actually the same one but I wouldn’t be surprised. But even without knowing that the similarities are simply too strong to be coincidental.
Century 21 Films channel. “Filmed in Supermarionation - The rocket powered story behind Thunderbirds”
@@marcbrasse747 Agreed...
Ford didn't "make this car"; they MADE an unpowered 3/8 MODEL.
Just came across this in my recommended and wanted to say great video, especially for a first upload. Subbed and excited to see what cars you cover next!
Thank you so much for your comment! I'm glad you liked the video. Are there any cars (from 1950 to 1979) that you'd like to see me cover next? (Since I've only posted one video so far, there aren't too many cars I've covered yet 😂)
