Jason Byrd - Retro Nerd
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 12 ก.พ. 2015
Hi everyone! I am Jason Byrd and I have a lot of things that I would love to share with all of you. I love collecting! I love retro video games, and if you also love them then you are alright in my book. I have so many stories to share about all of this stuff, but no one to share them with because I live in a small town where this hobby is not very popular. Please join me so I can get it all out of my system here on my channel. I live in the butt crack of nowhere and I don't typically have much spare income for collecting but I still sometimes surprise myself with some of the things I dream up to make it work. Becoming a TH-camr is my dream and I am just now able to finally take a crack at it. I would be forever appreciative if you were to join me along for the journey.
Nintendo 64 collecting is more complicated than you may think, and this is why!
I am a HUGE Nintendo 64 fan, and this video is my love letter to the N64 collecting community. In this video I talk about the more obscure aspects of the surprisingly huge world that is N64 collecting, and I try to explain the five reasons why I feel that there is A LOT more to collecting for the N64 than most people may realize. I hope you enjoy. Please like & subscribe if you like the content and it would be awesome if you left a comment to let me know what you think!! I worked months on this video so I sincerely hope you enjoy it!
NOTE-I did not have a good mic for the first portion of this video so I had a very hard time with the sound levels. I got a very good mic eventually so after the 6 min mark or so the sound levels should be MUCH better.
Here is the link I mention in the video of the incredible controller collection.

My Most INSANE Yard Sale Score, EVER!!! Very RARE vintage Sega Store Display Case found in a barn!
มุมมอง 158ปีที่แล้ว
I love a good yard sale but these days finding anything worth while is a pretty rare thing. I recently caught a lucky break and stumbled upon the most insane find of my life. I was lucky enough to find an amazing Sega store display case from the early 90s at a sale in the middle of nowhere, and I was able to get it for only $30. This is the story of how it all played out.
Nintendo Rolling Display Stand/Shelf/Cart THREE-WAY! VERY RARE!!
มุมมอง 411ปีที่แล้ว
These Nintendo rolling carts/stands are well known for how awesome they are but they are straight up legendary among collectors for how rare they tend to be. I have spent the last several years trying to track down one of each of the three size variations/designs so I could bring them together into the ultimate Vintage Nintendo Entertainment Center! A beast with three backs so to speak, one tha...

I have been on a mission since December 25th 1996 to complete a loose Nintendo 64 set. I have always had an image in my head of how I would build the display for the games if the day ever came... and it finally has. Collectors are crazy but very motivated by what we love. Let me known what you think about my long awaited N64 display. th-cam.com/video/KakW4dmqZfc/w-d-xo.html
Nintendo 64 Funtastic Systems and How I display Mine! Playing with your Byrd, With Jason Byrd!
มุมมอง 3012 ปีที่แล้ว
My earliest video game memory is of the Nintendo NES and that bad boy was king. When it was finally dethroned by the SNES it was at the very least clear why we were all bound to make the swap from the NES to the SNES sometime soon. Then the N64 returned the favor to the SNES by eclipsing it in every way. Years after the N64 released in North America we were all ready to hear about the newest st...
McDonald's Trash Becomes Retro Game Display Gold! - Playing with your Byrd, With Jason Byrd!
มุมมอง 1302 ปีที่แล้ว
Collecting retro video games is my passion but displaying those dang things gets ridiculously expensive. Acrylic display cases are just way too much for most people to afford, on top of collecting, so sometimes the only way to get it done is to get creative! In this video I reflect on why I collect, and I tell a story of how I managed to make literal trash into my favorite game room display stand
Winner's Cube vendor made a big mistake!

Key Master Prizes. Real of Fake?
มุมมอง 7K8 ปีที่แล้ว
The number one most asked question I get after winning a major prize, like an iPad, out of Key Master would be "IS IT REAL OR A KNOCKOFF?" and it is a good question. I use my most recent major prize win, and a couple of older ones, to answer that question.

beautiful, congratulations man thanks for sharing looks amazing
@@acquaprimo894 Thank you, I appreciate that! It really is a dream come true to finally add this one to my collection. Thanks for watching!
You'll die and it won't be a forever home.
Do you have the nintendo 64DD add on in your collection?
I do not, BUT I certainly want one, and it is on my personal grail list for sure.. I sincerely hope to add one to my collection in the near future, though.
Super awesome congrats on scoring that
@@hike6670 Thank you! I appreciate that!
I won a Nintendo switch and a meta quest 2 at the GSR arcade in Reno NV on that same game

@damienivy8422 Well, you are definitely not wrong, lol. Thanks for watching!

Do you own this machine?
@kidclaw11438 I do not. I live in a very small town and this was the only machine in our entire town at the time. Sadly, it no longer is located here though.
@@jasonbyrd-retronerddo you know who the owner is? I would love to contact him on inquiry of buying his key master miniZ
Did you own that key master mini from the how to beat key master videos?
@kidclaw11438 I do not. I live in a small town and it was the only machine in town at the time. I won nearly every prize it paid out while it was there though lol.
It isn't normal gray on the stadium 2 cart. It is sparkly, as well.
I've got a not for resell of the first sonic. Not that I would sell it but I wonder what it's worth
You forget super Mario 64 2
@michaelpramudhita-te2xh Oh how I wish that were true lol.
I use officially licensed Power A. Controller & Joy Con charging station
Neat video well made
@@GreeneryForTheScenery Thank you!
I dont get it. Usually, the common ones are the "fixed", and the older version that has the bug is usually the rare ones which is sought after. Everybody would have their bugged version sent back to get it fixed while the updated ones will be sent out and continues it production, making the bugged one rare due to its number. This issue is also common in other media as well, such as music. Like Iron Maiden's Number of the Beast album, they originally pressed like a hundred copies of the first issue, but there was an error with the prints that's why they re-issued it with fixed colors. Same with Bathory's album. Book misprints, day 1 patches in games, etc. these are usually rare and considered treasures. I wonder that's the story with WWF No Mercy.
@jessepinkeye2339 It is an unusual situation, but I will do my best to explain in a little more detail. In this case, the version of No Mercy with the "bug" was sold originally in HUGE numbers, and by the time anyone realized the game had a problem, most everyone already owned the bugged version of the game. When people started complaining about their saved data getting deleted, the company offered to fix it for free, but the customer had to pay to ship the bugged game back to the company for an exchange. Not very many people bothered to do the exchange though, and because of this, very few copies of the "fixed" version of No Mercy exist by comparison to the "not fixed" version. I have literally bought and sold hundreds of normal copies of No Mercy over the years, but I have only seen two "fixed " copies in all my time doing this. It's the extreme rarity of the "fixed" version that makes it so desirable to us weird collectors that care about such things, not the fact that the bug is fixed or the improved save functions in the game. I hope this clears it up a bit.
@@jasonbyrd-retronerd Crap, I don't know where my reply earlier went, it was very lengthy! It pretty much tells how I went in to a rabbit hole and found more answers. The fixed game version were less accessible as customers should reach out to THQ, instead of cancelling the bugged productions and recalling them and replacing the stores with a fixed one. A former employee got a hand of boxful of WWF No Mercy when they moved offices and sold them on ebay. Somehow I cannot post a link here to show where I got that info. Anyway, thank you very much for clearing that up! It made a lot of sense. This has been VERY interesting. (I'm just gonna leave it here because for some reason, I can't leave a reply on my previous comment 🤷♀️)
No problem at all. It really is an interesting subject for sure lol. Thanks for the awesome info too.
This video is AWESOME!! Thanks!
You forgot donkey kong 64 and Diddy kong racing
@maelbarraud3087 You are not wrong, and I do mention those games in the video's description, but I decided not to include them in the actual list. There is definitely an argument to be made for them to be on my list but the games DK64 and DDKR do not really have anything to do with Mario games on the N64 aside from DK as a character being in Smash and Mario Kart 64. With that in mind, I decided against including them to avoid any potential confusion, but I 100% know where you are coming from.
@@jasonbyrd-retronerdi see what you mean and one thing that is true is that most of the game that include donkey or Diddy as the or one of the main character of the game doesn't feature mario, exept for Mario vs donkey kong
“Could you tell at a glance which one is which?” No, once again, the devil is in the details.
Nice you got the fixed save cart. Congrats. Thats a holy grail for me. No Mercy is still the best wrestling game of all time.
What state you from?
I want to know too. It's really hard to guess with that subtle twang.
I am from Kentucky.
@@jasonbyrd-retronerdlol, kentucky is an easy one to to guess. I love this state.
@@jasonbyrd-retronerd I was thinking Tennessee. I've lived in Arkansas for the past several years. I'm starting to pick up an accent myself. Haha
Plot twist, the game is shit
Forgot mario paint
On this one, I was just going for Mario games on the Nintendo 64. Mario Paint was a masterpiece for sure, but it was on the Super Nintendo.
The surfing pikachu from Stadium/Yellow was amazing.
Yes, it was!! I also like the cool little surfing Pikachu nod in Snap. You can lead Pikachu to a surf board with apples, and he will hop on to pose for a picture, which I thought was just awesome, lol.
So that’s why my game would always erase randomly. That shit would frustrate the hell out of me.
@Sergesauce That is exactly what was going on. They would have swapped it for the fixed USA-1 variant if you sent it in to them, but I do not think many people knew about that offer back then, I sure didn't, at least.
@@jasonbyrd-retronerd I had no clue until now, I was like 10 with no internet at the time either. I wish I knew.
imagine actually wanting to pay that
It sounds crazy but there is always a collector out there willing to pay up for the rare and obscure stuff. I found my USA-1 variant in the wild for cheap so I got super lucky, thankfully.
@@jasonbyrd-retronerd those people ruined game collecting super hard to find a decent deal now and days cause everyone goes off eBay prices
Where Donkey Kong 64
Might as well include Diddy kong racing js lol

Thank you so much for the awesome feedback. It makes me SUPER happy to know that my video brought someone joy and I plan on doing many more N64 related videos in the future. Thanks for watching!!
@@jasonbyrd-retronerd My wife (who isn't into video games) thought you were hilarious when you mentioned that you had more fun during your vasectomy then playing a certain game!
The SNES stack is so satisfying to see.
look at all that e-waste collecting dust
It ain't waste if it's in a loving home, and his wife made him dust all of it! 😇
Just FYI something wrong with the color on your camera or just maybe your ambient lighting. Those yellow 64 controllers look straight up orange on my screen. While the magazine picture of the banana controller was a proper shade of yellow on my screen enjoyed the video
Thank you for the feedback. During the filming of all the various scenes over the several weeks I was working on this I was at the same time installing a new light set up all through my game room. I was experimenting with different lighting, and learning what works/what doesn't work as I went, and it unfortunately the learning curb shows sometimes in the video lol. This is what led to some scenes and moments where the lighting mucks things up a bit. I have a much better understanding of things now so hopefully moving forward these issues wont pop up as much on future videos. Thanks for watching!
Tragically my mom sold my pikachu N64 for $20 at a garage sale ment years ago lol
Oh man, I hate to hear that. Sadly, that happens far too often with childhood treasures. Sometimes, when I find an amazing deal at a yard sale, I wonder if there is someone that is going to eventually realize that item is missing from their room at some point and be crushed. Thanks for watching!
Great video! Just started my Nintendo collection with CIB NES power set & SNES Super set, next console will be the 64. Video was funny and very informative, thank you! Liked & Subbed
Thanks man, and I appreciated the awesome feedback! Congrats on starting your collection and welcome to the retro video game community. Thanks for watching!!
Very impressive collection.
Thank you! I appreciate that.
Weirdly, here in PAL territories, everyone looks for the non-revised version of No Mercy. Not sure if it's the same for the NTSC version, but while the revision did fix the memory leak, it also removed blood. You can still do a First Blood match in the revised release, but no red stuff actually appears, making it look like you magically won because reasons.
That is interesting. I know, here at least, the USA-1 is sought after big time BUT mostly by collectors and the occasional reseller with some game knowledge. A NTSC USA-1 is seriously hard to luck into here and collectors love to hunt them for that reason. Is there a large price difference between the two versions in the PAL territories? Thank you for watching and for the comment!
WAIIIIIT! they did revisions of n64 games!?!? Learned something new today
my new favorite youtube genre is gamers with a lil bit of a southern twang. You got yourself a sub

Its not really that complicated....if u put the game in the console and it works its good....btw nice n64 labels love it.... love how u stated that the wife said "her " house sounds like mine
Well, you're not wrong lol. At the end of the day that is the just of it I suppose. Thanks for watching!
Thanks man, I appreciate that. Yea she loves playing that card against me. I play it here like a joke but it's 100% her favorite threat lol.
the dust on ur consoles hurt me a bit
Yea, it hurt my wife too lol. She is still mad at me for not dusting them off first but I had major time constraints for filming and just didn't think about it, grabbed them off my shelf and went. It may help to know that she made me deep clean them all after she saw it so they are currently extraordinarily clean. Thanks for watching.
I'm a ps2 fan.
I may prefer to collect for the N64, but I LOVE me some PS2 on the side for sure!! lol
At first, I thought you were gonna say you were collecting every n64 third party controller. There’s gotta be at least 50 different variations and is uncharted territory. Not to mention severely undocumented. Sometimes rare controllers from places like the UK pop up that are have only been seen in magazines back in the day.
@HighFuel90 I have collected several different third-party controllers over the years but I still have a ton to learn about them for sure. I have no idea how many are out there though lol. It would certainly make for a great video if a person could document them all. Thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching!!
