How to Transform The Fiat Panda 4x4 - Installing A Mechanical Coupler
In this video, I will be fitting my latest upgrade!
This is a mechanical coupling unit, which will be replacing the viscous coupler mounted to my rear differential.
The idea is, on road I can put the car into 2WD, and then when the going gets tough, I can switch it into 4WD, which is a mechanical direct link from the front differential to the rear. This is essentially activating a central locking differential. Better economy on road, and better grip off road!
installation time was 3.5 Hours.

Fiat Panda 4X4 - Oil Service : Engine, Gearbox, Transfer Box, Rear Differential
มุมมอง 1.4Kหลายเดือนก่อน
In this video I will be replacing all oils in my 2005 Panda 4X4. This is the engine oil ( and filter ), gearbox oil, transfer box oil and rear differential oil. I will also be showing the types of oil I will be using and re fitting my under tray, as well as carrying out a brief check over. Note: The manual states to use 5W30 for engine oil. But seeing as the car has covered 90,000 miles, it is ...

Is that blue the original rear subframe or is it a newer modified one - if so where did you get it from?
Also - great work!! Looks awesome. Nice to do upgrades before the parts fail…
Definitely a different persoective for me. We ride dort bikes down there all the time. Coleman Green Lane is one ofy all time faves. TH-cam recommedned your mechaincal dif vid to me for some unknown reason but that led me here so I guess it worked out well. You video quality is really quite good. 👍
Oh nice ! So I guess you’re local to that area ? Thanks very much for the positive feedback.
@@PTP4X4 I'm up near Bedford but they are pretty my closest lanes. We often ride the east Herts area into Essex.
Hi, did the mods, engine swap, bigger wheels etc change tax and insurance much or was it minimal.
I have a trade policy which is quite relaxed with mods .. so it didn’t change for me. But I could imagine in a normal insurance policy it would go up slightly
Great channel it's different no one wearing their cap backwards, waving arms and hands all over the place and trying to deafen me. Thank you.
Hahaha 😂 thanks very much !!
In short, you are installing the same device present in 1st gen Panda 4x4 (the ones from the 80s, wich had a manual coupler, instead of a viscous coupler. The 3rd gen, if I remember well, use an Haldex couple.
That’s correct. Towards the end of the video i explained the set up and mentioned it’s very similar to the 1st gen panda. 🐼

Hi Do you need some great lighting for your car to help you better driving, off-road. We're the pro auto lighting company for nearly 20 year and we're looking forward to do some sponsorship with you!
I am in need of some LED’s for my headlights.. get in touch with me on instagram and we can discuss further! It’s : @ThePanda4X4
Unless you put freewheeling hubs on the rear, rhere will still be some friction loss from the rear differential.
I agree, but this set up will improve things
What FIAT should have fitted in the factory not the fluid coupling. Awesome mod.
I agree !
@@PTP4X4 I remember the 4x4 system on the original 4x4 Panda engineered by Steyr Daimler Puch. The parts were huge compared to the standard car's front wheel drive train. And it was all mechanical.
Very cool!! I own a 4x4 Climbing with the incredible 1.3 mjt and Haldex rear diff. It’s incredibly unstoppable. I strongly recommend the diesel engine. Original it has about 145 Nm, but with easy mods can arrive easily to 180 Nm!! After all, you own a really cool build, really like this!
Thanks !! Glad you are a part of the Panda 4x4 world !
I like how you repurposed one of the cup holders as a mounting spot for the lever lol
I thought 169 4x4 are permanent 4x4
The viscous coupling always sends some power to the back wheels, but when it senses slip, it will fully engage.
can't wait for the black and white paint job getting done ?
I'd like the LSD that they do. Because when you're struggling for grip, you can tell not all 4 corners have power going to them.
I think when the clutch next needs changing I’ll look into one !
purchase link?
I contacted prometeo meccanica direct on their Instagram. But they also have a website you can contact them.
Most interesting... Been thinking about something like this for some time, not realizing someone actually already made it! How about a LSD for either front or rear? Do somebody do that? I have been toying with the idea of splitting the handbrake into two levers to be able to brake one rear wheel.
Yes the same company do make an LSD for the front. And there is a company developing a locking diff for the rear. But for now this set up is brilliant
@@PTP4X4 thank you for the response. We got two 2006 models. One was supposed to be a spares bin for the other, but ended up fixing the spares bin and now got two 4x4 Pandas!
That's a great kit. I have seen it before on UK panda facebook page also but what I wonder is that doest it effect the brain or abs of the car? Because I have got a suzuki swift 4x4 and its ABS system is linked with the 4x4 module and the brain. Some people here disconnect the shaft but they say the car jumps when first starting like not good to do. Yes its more fuel efficent.
Because my car didn’t have the ABS system linked in with the 4WD system it’s absolutely fine ! But I would think if it was then it may create issues. Most likely wouldn’t though! I’m not experiencing any jumping
We asked the man AND THE MAN DELIVERED IN ABUNDANCE 🎉
Ahh thank you! 🙏🏼 appreciate it!
Oh, I've seen those! I always thought they were a lot more expensive! (As in: don't even bother asking expensive)
Yeah not too much really !
great work!, is there available for the panda 319?
I am not too sure you know.. I don’t think so but I could be wrong !
@@PTP4X4 can you send me the link from the company?
Sadly no
prometeo meccanica. I contacted them on Instagram.
@@PTP4X4 let us know
I'd say 500 euros is a bargain. You'll probably save that on fuel and diff wear over the next few years being stuck in 2WD when not off road.
I agree .. for the quality of the kit and the work that has gone into designing it, for €500 you can’t complain !
Hi, what was the cost for that product?
Around €500
We need a video about it !!
This will happen soon!
Brilliant stuff! Please excuse my ignorance, but does this do anything for managing torque 50/50 like a centre lock? Either way it's ace to see some proper mechanical bits in Pedro! Very cool to see
Thanks ! No it purely replaces the viscous coupling that was on the car. So now when I am driving on road I can have it in 2 WD, and then when I’m off road I can lock it into 4wd which acts like a central locking diff
@@PTP4X4i dont think Is a good idea Eliminate viscous joint because Is automatic (you go Always in 2wd with Panda and only when you dont have traction transfer couple on rear wheels)
It’s slow to respond and can cause issues if all of a sudden you need 4wd. And even with the viscous engaged there’s still too much slip for my liking.
Isn't that 4wd system mandated by ecu originally?
No it’s done by a viscous coupling on the rear differential.
@@PTP4X4 where did your new manual system come from?
Enjoyed the video 👍💥
Thanks !
Zombie apocalypse absolute weapon well done 👏
Exactly ! Thanks 🙏🏼
Wild 💪
Was wondering about your opinion on the diesel version of the 4x4.
I think they are ok if they have been remapped. The problem with those 1.3 engines is that there’s no power low down, and then there’s a big chunk of power, which can cause wheel spin. But once remapped they are better
Would it not have been easier to make the 100hp a 4wd? That's what I been thinking of doing... Love your car!
No way of mounting the rear subframe to the body unfortunately.. only 3 days work to do the engine swap
Hey pedro, american youtuber iwrocker as seen some of your vídeos and loved your car
Hey ! Thanks very much for that . Appreciate it

Haha i know this place all to well

Great build. When your channel gets bigger bring him to New Zealand on tour. We'll go wheeling and test him out on some of our tracks.
That would be a dream to do that!
What a great budget build. Just goes to show you don't need a big Landcruiser or Landover. Not sure how you'd go off camber? It looks tall and narrow.
Thanks ! Yeah I can imagine if the roof rack is loaded it will be top heavy
Great video!! The intro is really really nice it looks like you drive in sweden or in norway 😁
Thanks !! Was Scotland actually ! But yeah deffo throws off Nordic vibes. 🤙🏼
Great Video as always . Good to see Vito the Vitara in action also
I agree. Thanks for the continued support 🤙🏼
Please drive a little more responsibly when green laning, videos of ploughing through puddles & spraying mud & shit everywhere go against the Glass code of conduct & is not doing the hobby any favours. Pedestrians use the lanes as well as equestrians & cyclists so just take it gently.
Wetwipe
Okay Karen . You must be so much fun at a party .
😂😂😂😂😂
@@skipontour1980 To be fair, GLASS are half the reason that most the green lanes are still open byways. But on the flipside, these aren't 2 tonne Discoveries and Land Cruisers, these are little and light, and crucially need momentum as they haven't got low range gearboxes. If they crawled through these bogs, they'd be the green lane
Great story tell it again 👏
What’s the ground clearance on it? Love the vids 😊 Edit: on your panda
I have not measured this yet, but the car is a 30mm lift kit. Currently working on a bigger left kit and then I will measure the ground clearance
@PTP4X4 if you lift further maybe take the spare wheel off, your centre of gravity is already too high. Also don't over load your manufactured roof rating. A Panda roof rating is very low. Keep up the good work.
Great video!! 👍👍😀😀
Thank you !
😀
Technical video on how you find and plan lanes?
Good idea on a video. I’ll add that to my list
Buy a local O/S map and just go for a drive.
Awesome wee weapon of a car, love seeing your adventures with Pedro. Love it💙
Were can you buy dlrear diff, and prop shaft bearing covers ?
Prop bearing cover is factory fitment. The rear differential cover was from sump guards UK
