@LorneBalfe - His Dark Materials - 60 MINUTES OF FAFFING ABOUT!
Ok -- this is a total experiment. Here's a recording of me faffing about trying to finish off this piece from the amazing score to His Dark Materials by @LorneBalfe . If you literally have nothing else to do with your day, watch how terribly I put music together :-D
The track I am attempting to recreate here is called Asriel's Republic. This was recorded spur-of-the-moment late one night while I was trying to work on the second "verse".
Let me know if you like seeing this sort of thing. Maybe next time I'll even put myself on the screen and talk about what I'm doing :-D
WARNING: The reference track plays back very loud compared to my rough mix!
0:00 - Intro and playing down where I'm at
0:39 - Time to fix this bad chord
2:30 - Tweaking the Brass
3:37 - Tweaking the Strings
4:50 - Yes, I am lazy and use Ensembles more than I should...
5:25 - Referring to the reference
5:40 - High Strings
9:45 - Back to the reference and working the Bass line
11:00 - There's always a synth under the strings...
12:42 - Something weird going on with synths.. Work it out later!
13:00 - Winds
16:48 - A High Winds idea comes to me...
17:50 - Fixing Sparkling Winds negative track delay
18:35 - Can you hear the Cellos rushing during the build? Something's off...
19:30 - Found the problem! 1/16th out!
20:30 - Quick reference check -- I'm thinking about those big Brass lines...
23:50 - Progress review
24:30 - Wrapping out low strings
26:50 - Celli divisi
28:47 - Hear the annoying Trumpet? Cinebrass glitch!
29:20 - Fixing it!
29:25 - Review
30:30 - Time for the big Brass lines
31:22 - But first, throw down some Percussion
33:50 - Ok, NOW the Brass
37:35 - Hot tip -- Double with Trumpets for the wide HZ sound ;-)
38:25 - Bones and Horn counter-melody
45:00 - Big Brass bottom end
47:55 - Brass chords
50:40 - Review
52:10 - Choir
55:30 - Checking Choir voicings against Strings
58:37 - Don't forget The Ladies!
1:03:40 - Auto save... could be a good time to review :-)
1:04:21 - Let's clean up a few loose ends in the Brass
1:05:33 - A last minute harmonic idea for Bones
1:08:45 - Last play-through for the night...
1:09:30 - End
And that's it. Some insights into the way I make music in MIDI. I've you've got this far, congrats and thanks for watching!

I've been slammed a bit of late with this: th-cam.com/video/LT7h6sUeUhU/w-d-xo.html ... but that's another story. One of my OTHER favorite composers of old is the late James Horner. For the past few months I have been watching a WIP edit from a TV series I've been working on with a temp track playing behind a magnificent scene, and I finally asked the editors what the music was. Turns out it was this piece from the ill-fated Matrix revival, Matrix Resurrections. Is there a more seminal work from this eccentric musical duo formerly known as @daftpunk than the Tron Legacy score? I think not. And sure, while there are some questions about who really did all this, it is certainly a thematic work that has stayed with me since I first saw the movie. Recently (like, a day ago), I tore down my template and started anew. Then I threw this together to take it fo...

@@craigwentworthmusic Thanks Graig, I hadn't seen it. Beautiful Mockup, I actually have almost all your midi files, they are in my personal collection, I had a subscription to your Patreon, then for an important reason I had to cancel the subscription. Anyway, okay, Chevaliers de Sangreal and James Horner - The Rocketeer would be missing, perhaps for a purchase separate from the subscription. ? Thanks. Graig, have you ever thought about making a mockup on the main theme Honor (main theme of "The Pacific") by H.Zimmer?
can i borrow for a batman fan film? this is so accurate to the og theme, i couldnt tell the difference tbh
i will give credit of course 😁
I would expect nothing less! Go for it. Have fun with it!
Amazing. A Version of "Disc Wars" would be awesome 🙏

Great job! I wonder what strings library you used for this.
Well done!
Thanks!
Nice one, Craig!
Thanks @PeterSatera !
Awesome! would it be possible to get the cubase project?
I think this soundtrack has defined the sound and style of Hans Zimmer. Your mockup sounds fantastic, great Job Craig! Thank you so much for this, please don't stop. :)
I won't! Thanks for the kind comment!

Thanks Craig for showing also the backoffice :) I know nothing about this but I can imagine how wonderful it must be to create your own music with these tools. The software looks amazing 👌
This is so good! It weren't just great film scores in the '90s. The movies itself were so, so much better...
Hi man. I'm a beguinner, but always wanted to play this solo on guitar. Can you send me Tabs ? Would be awesome Great work btw <3

Your mockups sound so great, brilliant work! Can you maybe make a mockup of "The Ludlows" or "The Gift of Mortality" someday? I'm so in love with these classic soundtracks of the 90ies :)
Shucks! Thanks for the compliment. I'll have to give those scores a listen! I'm not familiar with them. Do you have any particular favorite cues you'd recommend?
@@craigwentworthmusic Thanks for the reply, Craig! Both are cues and from the movies „The Legend of the Fall“ and „The Bicentennial Man“. They are both in D Major and from Horner 🥰
FUN FACT: Shirley Walker, the same who did the Final Destination movies, Turbulence, Mystery Men and some Batman cartoons, conducted and orchestrated the score. She was also Zimmer’s mentor as they worked together in scores like Black Rain and Backdraft. Can you do a MIDI mockup of some track from Turbulence? It’s one of my favorite Shirley Walker movie score

Hello, You have made a really nice cover here ! Would you mind if I use it for a TH-cam video ? (I'd like to use it to illustrate rushes of the roller coaster Gotham City Escape at Parque Warner)
I don't own the copyright to this, but you can try. Perhaps just credit Danny Elfman for the original score, and a link to my channel would always be appreciated 👍
