Westgate Mall | Spartanburg, SC | A Neon 1990's esque mall that's starting to struggle.
The Westgate Mall, in Spartanburg South Carolina, opened for business on October 25th, 1975, originally featuring Meyers Arnold, Belk Hudson, and Sears. The mall would expand in 1977, adding JCPenney, and again in 1995, adding JB White, Dillards, a new food court and a 8 screen movie theater. Westgate mall's existence indirectly hurt the newer but ill fated Hillcrest Mall, and itself had to renovate and expand to prevent the Rouse Company from building a mall in Spartanburg nearby. By the time of the 2010's though, cracks begun to form with the Westgate Mall. Anchor store closures have left the mall fractured and vacancies are starting to appear. To make matters worse, as of May 2024, CBL & Associates have sold the mall to Namdar Realty. The fate of the Westgate Mall is unclear, however, today it stands as a mall that hangs in the balance between alive and dying.

I worked at Meyers Arnold when i was in high school. When i was a kid, my friend and i rode our bikes around the old woods before the mall was built! While exploring one day, we stumbled across the old Franklin family graveyard, located roughly where the Firestone store is now. When they built the mall, they had to track down family members for permission to relocate the graves. My favorite store was the Hobby Shop.

This is my childhood mall from my hometown! I have so many memories of spending time here with friends in high school. Almost every day we’d go and hang out in the food court. Good times. The mall is actually quite lively on weekends and during the holidays! I went last Friday and it’s still got a decent amount of the parking lot full. If this place went I don’t know what I’d do.

We used to go there after UGA games in the 80s and 90s then eat nearby as traffic cleared out on the surrounding roads after the game. Most kick offs were at 1:00 before everything was on TV. I purchased hats and die cast cars from stores in the mall. Downtown was doing fine in the late 80s IMO before I can't comment.

I appreciate your efforts in getting pictures or film clips of a mall in its hey day. I will never understand why a mall owner would put carpet in a mall. I wouldn’t even put carpet in the ground floor of my house. It’s ironic how the old pictures of these malls before their “renovations” look so much better than after the renovations. This is especially true for malls that first opened in the 80s. Mall designers got it right in the 80s. My mall was the Cutler Ridge Mall in Cutler Ridge, Florida in the 1980s. It was an absolutely gorgeous mall until hurricane Andrew totally destroyed it in 1992. When they rebuilt it in 1993 it didn’t look anything like the original. It looked cheap and cheesy with the low quality cheap looking pastel colored floor tiles. Malls designed in the 90s and 2000s did not have the same level of class and aesthetic beauty that malls built in the 80s had. The original Cutler Ridge mall had beautiful marble floor tiles and a warm, personal, aesthetic appeal. The rebuilt mall after the hurricane felt cheap, impersonal, campy, and cheesy. Typical of 90s and early 2000s mall designs. Today the mall is called Southland mall which is appropriate because it looks nothing like the original beautiful Cutler Ridge mall.

If I lived there and this mall wasn’t a pain to get to I would shop here. Especially if it had an electronics store. I don’t know why places like Fry’s and Radio Shack went out of business. Sure, places like Walmart sells electronics but the customer service there $ucks. I used to love electronics stores in malls like Babbages.

My mom is a Hiawassee native and this building's original purpose was the town's elementary school. Mom's first year attending in that building was in the fourth grade, so it would've opened in the mid 1950s. She can't remember off the top of her head when the school moved and the building became the mall, but it was probably sometime in the 1970s.

@@TheMallFoxNo problem! I spent a lot of my childhood in Hiawassee visiting family and I remember the building when it was at its peak "mall" in the 80s/90s so I can add a little more detail. The interior halls looked much more like a school back then, with standard linoleum floors and the same cinder block walls that are there now. The wider, walled off hallway did extend all the way to a main entrance at the front of the building. You can see those doors in the 2011 google street view so you are right on with your comment about that. Most of the front right was a Super-D store and I always thought it was cool that you had to go into the mall via those doors to get into Super-D. A Fred's store later replaced Super-D and that was probably the closest to a name-brand store there. As far as I know, the rest of the mall was smaller shops and professional offices that could only be accessed through the interior hallway. I think the Towns County Herald had its office there way back then and looks like they are still there so if you ever go back, someone there might be able to answer more questions.

So sad. I grew up going to this mall in the 80s and 90s. There was a Piccadilly near Sears that had these conveyer belts for tray returns. They would run a train on a circular track in the center and I would beg my parents to let me ride. My aunt worked at the full sit-down Chick-fil-A before the Food Court addition was built. There was a store for kids clothes that had an indoor play area for the kids. My grandparents lived close by and often when the family came in to visit at Christmas and Thanksgiving there would always be someone going to the mall. My aunts took me on shopping trips. So many memories.
