This film is a rough and ready edit of a conversation recorded at Beesands, with Graham Lynn, John Crocker, Winkie Steer and John Hutchings, for the SW willow project by Anna Pope. We have uploaded it so you can settle in with a cup of tea and listen to them yarning about village fishing life.

David Sales - A Lyme Fisherman

David Sales was awarded the Churchill fellowship, which saw him take a trip to the US and Canada to study their lobster fishery. He brought back the way they measures lobster - and its how we do it today. He also spearheaded the campaign to designate Lyme Bay as a marine reserve.

    Really nice having this craft documented for later generations to see , the craft is still practiced by a handfull of us and the pots used for fishing still, hopefully more will want to learn and take up this way of fishing again

    David was a friend of my late fathers. Dad was a boat builder and did some work for him down in Wests bay many times. Wasn't it David who had the isle of Purbeck BD45 , built by Appledoors . by god the man could catch crab and lobster

    When I was seventeen, a long time ago. I was with a couple of older fishermen shooting long lines for skate. I asked one of them , whats the marks for this bank Artie. He says to me , see that lighthouse back there? . Yes Artie, he says you see that field to the left of the light house?? . Yes Artie, well he says ive had many a good s**t in there . End of conversation. Happy days.
