Exhaust was stock on this M2c didn’t mention in my video but might be nice to try different mic placements too (in the cabin, under the hood for turbo noises, etc). only thing if you don’t have 32bit float is to watch those levels!

if i’m rolling make sure to breathe lightly through my nose. i’m a runner so this is natural haha. might take some practice but if you’re a loud breather, it’ll probably pick it up.

i’ll be honest, this hadn’t once crossed my mind but it’s a totally valid callout. Probably should have included a disclaimer in the video about this possibility. i’ve opted against some head restraint gopro mounts in the past as i didn’t want a pointy piece of plastic or metal pointed at the side of my neck in the event of a crash. Not to most fun thoughts but good to keep them in the back of your mind and play it safe!

haha i’ll have to give this a go (maybe with a microfiber in between?) i seemed to have solved this issue by going with some proper suction cup mounts from smallrig / seasucker and adding a little moister to help create a vacuum. will put out an update video with all my latest insights 🙏🏼

downsampled this video to fit the rest of the footage filmed but otherwise, it doesn’t hurt to have more resolution to play with 💪🏼

definitely going to be a bit grainy as gopros aren’t too great in the dark. would recommend tossing a small light in the cabin of the car to brighten things up (just not too much to make it distracting when driving) 👍🏼

Yea seriously, the whole time I was like why wouldn't he just run the mic through the trunk instead of putting tape all over the outside of the car and then have to worry about the mic falling off?

in hindsight, with this car, routing the line through the interior is entirely possible and might have been a better option provided the seats fold down. this may not be possible with every car but where it is, id say save some tape and route through the trunk 👍🏼

ah just a cheap camera suction cup mount. id suggest buying the gopro suction mount as they work far better for smaller cameras

Hey there! Exciting to hear you’re going to start capturing the audio from your rides! In hindsight, the info in this video is a little dated and probably due for an update but here’s the essentials: It helps to invest in a higher quality mic. Whether you use the in-built mic or run a line out, note the quality of microphone and it’s limitations. (H1n stereo mics are far superior than my cheap Lav mic) I typically lay the audio over my video in post however you could run a direct line into a gopro just note the cables you’re using are correct and that you will only get the audio from the line-in and not the gopro mics (this will likely lead to an easier workflow and save you some time line up the audio but at the cost of being able to mix in audio directly from your camera; which i prefer) Unsure of the H4n however i’ll likely be picking up a set of Zoom F2s in the future as i was blown away when using them for an 812 vs F12 video. Also, i didn’t mention in the video but be sure to set your mic to the maximum bit depth possible for the most range and flexibility in post. Hope this helps, lmk if you have other questions 👍🏼

I use a tiny deadcat! I have a tutorial on my channel (albeit it’s a little dated at this point) but if you set your audio right, you shouldn’t have too much wind noise in there 👍🏼

Thank you! The MOVO was the old mic I used on my camera for better audio when talking. The Zoom was for all of the exhaust clips 👍🏼 hope this helps!

All of the above are possibly correct. I prefer shooting out of a minivan as this allows you to get closest to the floor which gives the clips a sense of hastened speed with the increased motion blur from the ground. In most cases, hanging out of a car window is the only option but still works wonders 👍🏼

Great question! The a7sii is pretty well regarded as the low-light monster but an a7iii should fair great in low-light when paired with a fast lens (35mm 1.4 is my choice 😉). I’ve had super impressive results from my a7riii in lowlight as well. With these “older” cameras, I’d recommend shooting in Still for your picture profile as slog-2 is really used for higher dynamic range scenes. So where there’s less light in the scene, it’s not so imperative that you capture in a flat profile. MakeArtNow made an awesome video on this showing that the Still profile performed best in lowlight situations. (I’ll link his video in the description for you) At the end of the day, probably the biggest factor is that he’s externally recording to an Atomos display which I believe allows him the ability to record in 10-bit color. This flexibility in post combined with awesome composition, edit pacing, amazing cars, and smooth / curated movements lead to an insane piece of art. Hope this helps! Awesome question! This would’ve been shot on his a7sii which has been hailed as the Low-Light King for some time. Also, provided he has his Sigma 35mm f/1.4 available (which would be the lens I’m assuming he’s using for a majority of the shoot) I’d say he’s probably pushing iso slightly but not over doing it. With that camera, he’d probably only need to be around the 1600 to 3200 range is my guess? This is why he’s able to keep the noise levels very low, practically unnoticeable. I used to film all of my cinematics on my a7riii which at 4k 24p had very similar low light performance to the a7sii. I was able to get night shots on my 35 1.4 with the aperture wide open, no problem. These are all just assumptions but they’re also educated guesses from my personal experience 👍🏼 Hope this helps!

@@apexpixel ah okay thanks man! I bough a a6500 yesterday. I also want to shot in low light but its pretty hard.. do you also have great pictures with ISO 1600-3200? I got a lot of rush with 800 iso.

Ah yeah, transitioning to full frame will help a lot with night shots. What kind of lenses are you using? I’d say the biggest thing is to be selective with your shots and shoot where there’s some sort of light source. I invested in a set of light tubes and those are amazing for night shots too!

@@apexpixel Thanks first of all for the answers! I use most of the time the Sigma 35mm.but also have the series lens (18mm-55mm). Now it looks much better than at the beginning :D Which Picture Profile do you use in low light & which in "normal" conditions? Hartnett doesn't give me an answer for the 6500 & I think that's the hardest setting. Have 2 favorites by now, but would like to know what he or you use.

@@xtaatix9729 back when I used my a7rii to film at night (probably only slightly better performer in lowlight than an a6500) I would shoot in a custom “still” picture profile that makeartnow discovered. This resulted in significantly lower noise in darker situations (I’ve linked the video in the description) Now with the a7siii, I shoot exclusively in Cine3 + Slog3 for my color & picture profile. Even in the dead of night, the dual iso means I can shoot at 12,800iso and get a super clean image! In the daytime I prefer Slog2 / Slog3 for the highest dynamic range 👍🏼
