Hi Andy, thanks for your informational videos. I'm wondering if this is the same transformer that can be used on the Hunter X-Core. Are Pro-C and X-Core the same? Trying to figure out the No AC problem. We've already switched out the battery. So now, do we need to replace the transformer?
Have you tested the transformer? If not, test that there is 24v (or more) coming out. If you don’t have a multimeter, you can test it using a solenoid. Connect it to the wires coming out of the transformer and it will buzz, verifying voltage.
Thank you!
My pleasure!
Sorry for my dumb question, but what type of sprinkler body can i use a MP rotator on? I was thinking on using the MP3500 for an area of 35'ft.
All questions are good questions! Any “pop up spray” type sprinkler will work. Some exceptions, so look for Hunter PRO Spray or Rain Bird 1800
@@Andy_Humphrey Thank you! this the question I had in mind, because I wanted to get MP rotators! You earned a subscriber!
@@elielcreado happy sprinkling!
I bought dozens of rotary nozzles recently. Front yard ones have been changed and I'm happy with the result. Just be careful the distance rating. The more the better doesn't necessarily ring true in lawn care. One rotator I got has 22-30' rating and it's just way too much lol. Typically up to 15' is all you need in regular house. But the back yard couldn't take the rotator nozzles due to low pressure. I had a leak test guy come out and he said there's a leak under concrete in the far corner of backyard. It must be the sprinkler supply line. Water bill has been high. but I don't see any sign of leak on ground. I don't think rotor will work in the backyard either but I got one this morning anyway to test it out. I think rotator nozzles require minimal 40psi. Rotors may require even more...
Good points, thanks for sharing. Regarding your leak, that is unfortunate. I'm sorry to hear that. You might consider installing a Master Valve so that at least your mainline supply is only leaking while the system is operating and not leaking 24/7.
I ordered the WiFi faceplate and it won’t turn on. It turned on once and then never turned on again. The new faceplate had many more pins for the plug than the original faceplate does.
Is the date code of your controller after March 2014? If not, the controller is not compatible. Another way to check is to check the color of the old faceplate buttons; they should all be blue. If your controller is compatible, I recommend testing the voltage from the transformer - you should have between 24-27vAC.
@@Andy_Humphrey Nope. The buttons are all green. So I think I need to replace the whole controller?
@@mas3ymd correct. Your controller predates the compatible version. Replace it with a Hydrawise or any controller of your choice! Unfortunately, no need for the faceplate you purchased.
Yea diaphragm is 9.99 and four screws while whole valve is removing and cutting pipes and all
True
bramd new controler brand new pumo brand new valves and brand new solenoids and brand new back flow . All brand new and still pump runs
I'm not sure I totally understand your question. Are you saying that the pump runs even when everything is off? A booster pump adds another level of complexity as there are a few different ways to wire & control the pump. You may want to contact your sprinkler installer for assistance.
In terms of actual irrigation volume, are these the same as regular toro heads? If it's more efficient shouldn't you adjust the zone timing to be less? Or do you keep the timing the same, it's just the coverage that's more efficient?
Spot on. Yes, if you are an advanced user and understand the principles of proper scheduling. There are additional factors, such as wind, that this nozzle helps.
Any left, Andy? I need a ribbon cable but can't find the part number for the ribbon cable.
Hmm..we don’t have any. Curious; typically a Ribbon Cable isn’t proprietary, so perhaps you can find an equivalent cable online by counting the number of wires within the cable connection. Good luck and let us know how you make out.
There's one part you didn't mention, which is the o-ring on the base. It fell off when I disassembled my filter, and I wasn't sure how it was supposed to go back in. I think I see it if I freeze frame your video.
Thank you!! Is your filter working okay?
@@Andy_Humphrey Not at this tme. I think I may have damaged the o-ring, or maybe it was just old and streteched out before I messed with it. Unfortunately, I can't just order the o-ring as a replacement part. Have to disassemble it and take another look at it, and maybe order an o-ring from McMaster-Carr or something?
Do you have to reprogram after the old batteries are removed and replaced with fresh batteries?
No, the programming is saved within the non-volatile memory. You will only need to reset the time & date.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO USE IN 200MM HDPE PIPES
This works with PVC, CPVC, PEX, Copper L, and Copper M pipes. For 200mm (4”) you may need to cut the pipe or a least drill and insert an impeller style flow sensor.
I have the original Hunter Pro-C so swapping just the face plate is not an option. Can I replace my pre-2014 Pro-C with something like a new Hunter Pro-HC controller?
Absolutely. Easy DIY project. I recommend taking a picture of the wiring inside your existing Pro-C, then wire it back exactly the same way with your new controller. Done!
@@Andy_Humphrey Thanks for the reply Andy!
how do you know if the transmitter is out of batteries?
If you’ve tried everything and can’t get it to connect, and it’s older than about 5ths, it’s likely the battery.
Of the two common sizes, a 3/8” pipe to a 1/2” head would require the smallest ID. To use that same ID fitting on a larger 1/2” pipe with a larger 3/4” head would be restrictive IMO. It’s a flow compromise for the convenience, I’m sure.
Great point. Flow could be, or is, restricted. my guess is that the restriction is marginal and is less than the nozzle size, making it inconsequential. Could be something EF might pursue in the testing lab. Thanks for sharing!
I wish there was a way to get this controller to activate two solenoids at the same time. So far I have been unable to accomplish this when hooking two wires together at the solenoid or hooking two wires together on a single zone. Please advise.
I have not tried this, but from a power perspective, this unit should operate 2 DC-latching solenoids at the same time. I say this because the controller is capable of operating both a Master Valve + Zone Valve, which is the same as operating 2 zone valves. To rule out any wiring issues, I would remove 2 solenoids, wire them together, and then wire them directly in zone 1 at the controller. DC Solenoids have polarity, so be sure to wire red/red to Zone 1, and black/black to the COM. Best of luck and let us know how it works out for you. -Andy
@@Andy_Humphrey - I’ve attempted connection both wires at the solenoids together as well as attaching two wires if the same solenoid together at the controller and still can’t two control valves to come on at the same time together. I don’t want to have to excavate it the valve box and reconstruct the irrigation lines together to accomplish this. There has to be a way? Any additional thoughts would be appreciated. (I’m using an XC Hybrid controller) Thanks.
What is the reason for needing 2 to operate simultaneously?
@@Andy_Humphrey - I currently have 12 sprinkler heads watering my lawn, being operated by 4 separate valves which takes forever. (e.i. three sprinkler heads on each valve station.) I want to operate 6 sprinklers at once operated by only 2 valves at the same time and the other 6 heads operated by 2 valves also at a different time. Having four separate valve stations takes forever to water everything. Water volume and pressure isn’t an issue at 70 psi.
It’s possible the output power from the terminal is different (not enough) to engage 2 latching solenoids, vs an AC powered controller. Is there a specific reason you need a battery controller? Another option would be to switch all (or 2) of the valves to something like the Hunter NODE, and program them concurrently. If you have a spare wire you could add another controller, and program it concurrent with the other controller. With 4 zones you have options 👍
Thank you - this was very helpful!
Thanks Bruce. Have fun capping!
Easy to follow, and covers all ways to cap a sprinkler. Thanks!
Cool, thanks! Happy sprinkling
How to program it please? What is the start time1, end time2, start time2 and start time2? The run time? The soak time?
Example::::::::Start Time 1: 10:00am, End Time 1: 10:30am is a 30min cycle.
Completely lost on wiring instructions... yes, two yellow go to 24V. Then I have white, blue and orange. Everywhere I look says something different. Any help? PRO-HC
If your system is already programmed will it retain those settings once you connect to the Wand?
Yes! This is a great question. Your programming will move to the cloud. Then you’ll always have a back up, so if something happens to the controller, and you replace it with a new one, you’ll still have the programming as well.
@@Andy_Humphrey thank you. I finally decided to use the Wand with my X2 and I’m just learning how to program it. Your video helped tremendously. Would hate to lose the set up as it is perfect.
Awesome. Have fun with it!
Helpful video here, good to know! 🏆🏆🏆
thank you. If i missed anything let me know, happy to help!
Can I just place something heavy on the sprinkler head till I can get the flooding issue solved?
I found this to be a pretty informative video. the explanation of the concepts was very clear and easily understandable without making it overly, complicated. now i just need to find a table of standard friction losses that includes valves.
Thank you for your kind words. Every valve has a psi friction table available. This is typically found on the product Cut Sheet or Specification Sheet. This link is an example; scroll to the bottom of page 2 to see the friction loss. -Andy www.hunterindustries.com/sites/default/files/CA-Cutsheet-1-Inch-PGV-and-PGV-Jar-Top-US.pdf
@@Andy_Humphrey great, thanks! I guess I should have thought of that myself.
Haha, now you know. Pass it on 🤙
Imo. Those things are just a huge upsell and just make a bigger target fir mower wheels to hit. And when they do get hit they just transfer the force directly to the plastic head and it breaks anyway.. now you need your contractors to reolace the head and a new useless doughnut.. again big upsale more money. The key to making you plastic lawn sorinklers last a long time.is.... to set the Sprinkler properly in tge first place.. they need to be set in tge ground perfectly right from the start. Straight.in line with the grade of the ground.. and A half to 1 inch deeper then grade.. if they are cocked sideways. Or sticking up above grade they will get damaged..! Its only a matter of time.. if tgey have doughnut around them they will get damaged.. again only a matter of time..when a head is set properly and the soil is thoroughly compacted around them.. they should be a half to 1 inch below grade when retracted.. being down in tge ground a half inch or so when they are off is what keeps them safe from damage..if they are visible / sticking up or have doughnut around them they will be damaged . Sooner or later they will get broken..tucked away below grade when not in use is the key to making them last..ive been installing irrigation for 40+ years and without a doubt proper setting of the heads is key..maybe ill start a online irrigation how to site once i retire..
What you don't mention I'd if the Sprinkler I'd on the end the line .or the end of a branch line..( connected to a 90 deg fitting) not a tee fitting.. and you live in an area that requires the system to be blown out for winter. There will be no way to get the water out of that particular line and it will freeze and break over the winter. IF the head is capped off the water in the line can not be blown out without digging the head back up and removing the cap every year in the fall..
Swapped the entire valve but it still doesn't shut off . I flushed it too . Is there a chance that it's water pressure related ?
Does this make the controler WI-FI ?
Nailed it! Yes, there is Wi-Fi integrated into the face panel. Thank you for pointing it out; guess I forgot to mention that. Happy sprinkling!
I just pulled the old transformer out and the wires were just twisted together in a wire nut. I did not have to cut them. You mentioned in the video they would need to be cut as they would be connected like they were soldered. When I connect the new controller should I solder the wires? Or just use a wire nut?
Nice work. Wire connectors are fine. Depending on your model controller, or year (if not this exact model) it could different. Perhaps the transformer was replaced at some point in the past.
I have serious doubts about these rotator nozzles. I’ve Inherited a system done with these and almost all of them DO NOT rotate.
Is the rain sensor for the X2 in the controller already or is that something additional to purchase?
Hi Matt. Controllers require an external rain sensor. I recommend using a wireless option to place it in an optimal location. Here is a link, this rain sensor has the 'Direct Response' feature, which will shut down the controller immediately rather than wait for a specific amount of rain to accumulate: sprinklersupplystore.com/products/hunter-wrclik-wireless-rain-sensor
I think I know this question but I want to be sure. I have the 5000 series Rain bird sprinklers can I use the 1800 retrofit to do drip irrigation in my garden or is the a 5000 retrofit kit that is have not seen on the internet?
Hi Robert. Yes, you could. However, the kit is not a direct replacement because the service fitting on the 5000 is 3/4”, and the Retro Kit uses a 1/2” fitting. With this in mind, you might consider feeding the drip by removing the sprinkler and connecting directly to the 3/4” service fitting.
Hi sir can you help me in my design in irrigation..what is the best pipe size for irrigation with a 12 hectare rice field sir..I hope you would answer this question.. Thank you very much in advance
Hello. I wish it was a simple answer; however, this is complex and requires additional information about your water source, existing pressure, and how you plan to irrigate the rice crop. If you are interested in technical design assistance, please book a consulting call using the link in the description.
My house has a sensor but in the two years I’ve lived here I’ve not been able to find it. I just have it set to bypass since I haven’t been able to locate it. I just wish I could find the dang thing haha
Hahahaha. Good chance it is gone! You can remove the receiver and place a jumper wire between the terminals (a paper clip will work) if you're tired of using the bypass mode. Sounds like a good time to replace it!
another video that shows the basic overview and i still don't know how to switch between programs.. :( .. unless mines broken idk ??
Which brand of MPs are most reliable.
This depends on who you ask. My observation is that Hunter MP Rotators have the majority of positive responses from professional irrigation contractors. Hunter's technology was acquired from Walla Walla Sprinkler Co (NelsonIrrigation.com), who invented the technology.
Ty for the great info I have a well system 2 zones 30 mp heads on each zone uggh. Well anyway the head are constantly getting stuck or spin like crazy can I put old school reliable rotar heads instead of mps
Yes, that is possible. You will likely need to add zones (to 4+) to accommodate the increased flow rate of the rotor heads, so I wouldn’t recommend switching them out, 1 for 1. Partial redesign may be required.
@@Andy_Humphrey ty for your generosity of knowledge
Very helpful and well done, but that clicking sound effect after every word is very annoying
How do you shut off a Rainbird 3500 though?
Gracias Sprinker Nerd Andy, great vid!
Outstanding video. Thank you…
Thank you, Scott! Standing by to assist if you need any support with your system.
Are you able to control the sprinklers with app if you have a pump start relay installed?
Yes, just remember configure (assign) the Pump Start to all programs. Here is a screen capture: www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/43zh11j0eomxgk6snscoq/Hunter-X2-Pump-Start.png?rlkey=pidn0jjv03j7ucacfsqpdal1l&dl=0
These caps don't work. They leak. Tried plumbing tape, orings, everything. No use.
There should be an o-ring that is factory installed by Rain Bird. Sometimes they fall out, or are loose in the shipping bag. Assuming you are aware, just double checking. Thanks for sharing.
@@Andy_Humphrey thanks! Yes I do have the oring like you showed in the video. But water still leaks.
@@elexhobby Interesting. Have you tried other sprinkler bodies? Curious if this is related to only 1 sprinkler, or if it is a pattern across all of your 1800 model sprinklers.
I have a strip of grass between the sidewalk and the curb. We are slowly converting the lawn to rock/bark/pavers for decorative purposes and to conserve water. I am capping off the majority (there were 7 sprinklers) and then converting 3 to drip some decorative shrubs and a flower pot. Will this cause pressure and drainage issues?
Should be fine. Remember to consider that everything will operate at the same time, so give some thought to the precipitation or flow rate of the drip emitters, vs, any turf grass you have remaining in that zone. If that’s not an issue, hydraulically, you should be fine.
Attention everyone. Few realise how crappy their wifi routers work in a neighborhood surrounded by others all competing for the same wifi bandwidth. Plus most wifi routers are factory defaulted to 'AUTO' wifi channel selection, resulting in channel mobbing & mob reselecting next channel. Every time your wifi router changes channels there is about a 7-15 second wifi outage while it reconnects. There are 2 options: set your wifi router to not 'AUTO' & manually pick a least used channel & stay there; or use wired devices to bypass wifi altogether. Don't blame your device or your ISP for your own lack of wifi channel management. Its up to you.
I see it all of the time here in AZ. I hate it so much.
It’s ridiculous
Hi, I have 3 zones sprinkler and when side zone starts it doesn’t stop or change to another zone. Timer is working fine but when side zone is on then it doesn’t stop even if I turn timer off. I have irritrol 2713 1” valve. Should I just change solenoid or whole new valve?. Thanks.
I'm 22 and I want to create my own garden irrigation system using microcontrollers. Mr.Andy sir your channel is a nugget of gold and pure diamond for that. So much information so well presented and told with such a passion and interest. Thank you so much for what you're doing. I really appreciate your work!❤ Here's your crown 👑!
You are very kind, Thank you. Good luck with your garden adventure!
Same with jacuzzi, drives me insane
Haha
Seems like the first two methods only apply to pop up spray heads, not to rotary gear drive drive sprayers. I have not been able to find a housing cap for the Orbit Saturn 3 or the Rain Bird 32SA rotary sprayers. Also, I have not found a way to disassemble the internal mechanism to separate the cap form the mechanism for the universal cap/plug. Did I miss something? I'd rather not dig out the outer housing to access and cap the 1/2 in-ground fitting.
You are correct. If capping rotor, or temporarily turning it off, you might look at switching to a rotor with a built-in shut off, like the Hunter I-20, or K-Rain SuperPro. You’d still need to dig it up to replace, but then you’d have the on/off control.
@@Andy_Humphrey Thank you for the quick response and for these alternative solutions. I see the the K-Rain K2 Pro also has on / off control.
@@JohnBraatz-gx1kc I believe the K2 is an older model (could be wrong). You might also look at the RPS75i (must be the 'i' model). This sprinkler also has a built-in shutoff. th-cam.com/video/6cnlVdGMLdo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=sh7A6zPoVkEzqYqQ - www.krain.com/rps75i-rotor-with-intelligent-flow-controltm
