I'll be Posting this on July 4, 2023 "The Star-Spangled Banner" is the national anthem of the United States. The lyrics come from the "Defence of Fort M'Henry", a poem written on September 14, 1814, by 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships of the Royal Navy in Outer Baltimore Harbor in the Patapsco River during th...

3 wrongs were done against the south. The first was the electoral college stealing their vote in defiance of who the people actually voted for and casting it for Lincoln. The second was crushing souths right to leave the union as was allowed when the country was founded. The third was leaving the south in ruins after the war after they'd burned farms, looted towns, and destroyed infrastructure. Say it was about slavery all you want, Lincoln's only intention when first starting the war was to force the union to stay together. It was only near the end of the war when he needed a cause and a way to keep England and France from recognizing the confederacy that he stapled on abolishing slavery.

Let slavery rot in the grave forever and good riddance, but I think there's reason enough for the South, Midwest, Great Plains, and Hawaii to start considering...shall we say an exit plan after decades of incompetence, corruption, and using our brothers and sons as cannon fodder in foreign wars.

@@joshuadunford3171 True, and for their time, that made sense. I originally wrote what would probably be TLDR version but for the bullet point version: 1. Slavery was only opposed on an international level fairly recently. Britain and France has only ended the practice a little over a generation beforehand while the movement had actually started in England around the end of the 18th century. To put things in perspective, Banister Tarlton, a notable British veteran of the American war of independence, was a main opponent of the abolitionist movement in Britain after the war. 2. Prior to that, slavery was a common practice throughout human history, with it being an ancient practice even when the Sumerians began writing down their myths. As such, it was a normal part of life for the Southerners as it had been to people around the world up to this point. To show what I mean, after Britain had even blockaded ports in Africa to strangle the slave trade despite claims from African kingdoms that profited from it (something they get little credit for, I might note). 3. Slavery had long been a major part of the South's agrarian economy, especially the cotton industry. Emancipation was naturally going to mean a loss of labor and major change to their economic model, but it also meant a large influx of cheap labor which threatened the interests of even those who didn't own slaves. To see what I mean, consider how cheap imported labor has often been the means to undercut negotiating power for unskilled labor, or how often in strikes during the 19th and early 20th century, it was fairly common for employers to just replace strikers with a whole knew team. 4. Having read decent number of writings by southerners during these debates at the time, a lot of them were afraid of former slaves becoming armed and revisiting their former owners to...discuss their opinions on getting lashed as a form of punishment and whatnot. Throw it all together, and even if we're morally repulsed by slavery today, the concerns they had at least make sense when looked at for what it was at the time rather than today. As for modern fans of the southern cause, in my experience, they tend to look back on the confederacy fondly for being a time when their ancestors thumbed their noses at federal authority, rather than for fondness slavery or the idea of racial supremacy (for the overwhelming majority: not saying there isn't the very occasional white sheet enthusiast, but nothing like in decades prior).

@@joshuadunford3171 Yes, and that made sense for the time, given the institution had been around since the dawn of civilization, and the movement to destroy it had arisen in England less than a century prior. That's before getting into the economic fallout or concerns over those newly freed wanting payback. (I had a short-essay's worth of elaboration, but for...some reason, it's gone, and I have to watch my wording to keep it from happening again.)

Is everyone in this comment section delusional? The confederacy only existed to defend the terrible institution of slavery. It’s not something to be proud of. Learning about it is great but do not make it seem glorified. Any man who fought for the confederacy, fought for slavery. I say this as a South Carolinian we need to get our facts straight people.

@@ThymariVanRaalteI appreciate you having a (no pun intended) “civil” debate unlike the other commenter here. The issue of the raising of troops causes me to ask the question “what did those states fear those troops would take from them? Their slaves?”. And the issue of tariffs is a valid topic of discussion. I will further research that topic before saying anything about it.

Yep. Slavery was on its way out. Lincoln needed a reason to go to war to keep that revenue from the South coming in. Funny how slavery wasn't brought up as an issue until nearly halfway through the war 😂. They even offered the South constitutionally guaranteed slavery. It was all about the money! Nearly every war in history always has money involved as the main motivator.

Lincoln never stared anything, he never even wanted to END slavery. He wanted to stop more states from becoming slave states. When he was elected the rouge boys at the south thought that he was gonna take their slaves and destroy the south’s economy!!!!!!!!! So they seceded and the rest is history.

Lincoln didnt start the war, his political speeches said he would contain slavery, not destroy it, he hoped he could contain slavery and it would naturally phase out, but southerners thought he was going to take their slave's, even after he stated he was not, they still declared independence from the US, And the CSA started the war by attacking multiple US forts and seizing them, Lincoln only mobilized 75,000 men in defense, but then the CSA attacked fort Sumter and started the war.

This song just feels hypocritical. What did the Patriots do in the Revolutionary war? Secede from a Government they thought was tyrannical. What did the south do? Secede from a government they thought was tyrannical. Yet the Northerners get pissed about that? How do you think you got your country in the first place? Due to secession traitors who no longer wished to bow to a king.
