Zeitgeist's The Spirit of the Time: Episode 39 with Craig Russell
Passenger 38: Forty-one-year veteran of Walt Disney Imagineering who has overseen design, engineering, production, construction and project management of Disney parks and resorts all over the world, Craig Russell.
Craig Russell joined WED Enterprises in 1980 as a project coordinator on Tokyo Disneyland. After a brief stint with Sequoia Creative and the 1984 LA Olympics, he returned to oversee project engineering of the Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park and design management of Tokyo Disney Sea. He later ran a number of divisions before spending nine years co-leading WDI as Design and Project Delivery Executive. Craig returned to project management for the completion of Shanghai Disneyland, as well as Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge before managing all projects in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Shanghai. Plan to join us on a time travel journey for the ages as Craig shares his experiences leading the design and execution of some of Disney’s biggest, most complex, and highly successful projects from concept to opening day!

Having worked Triceratops Encounter in ‘99 I can tell you exactly why it didn’t work, and it wasn’t because the guests weren’t impressed by the figure’s animation. The way it was set up made them stand in line waiting through a steamy jungle with lots of sun often for over an hour. To then be guided by a average non actor TM reciting a spiel that despite being written with humor, we were forced to deliver as serious as possible by the “coach/manager” they put in charge of it. Then after spending an hour+ of their day sweating in line a uninteresting 15min walking tour, more waiting before going in to the finale, they were extremely disappointed it wasn’t Pteranodon Flyers:the ride in the sky they expected it was. There were a multitude of things that could’ve made it work, that I as a 20yo could’ve pointed out (and tried to). Such as a better script, better manager/director, making it actual ACTORS, interactive elements in the line, the illusion of seeing more Dinos, or just better signage. But despite 4-5 lateral adjustments to how it was presented how to reach the audience seemed to be a mystery. Perhaps creative should’ve actually talked with those of us who tried to make it work as given. Because some of us bypassed the guest’s disappointment so much they’d often think it was a real animal. If not a dinosaur a Rhino we glued horns on to. (Which also speaks to the audience’s intellect we were trying to reach.) To bad it sat for near 20years abandoned, it was deserving of so much more.

Wow! What a "show." It was all over the place in terms of content, but I loved it. Hearing Tony's insider/imagineer perspective on all of these things is just wonderful. Tony's comments about DL vs WDW in terms of scale and the number of attractions available in close proximity to each other I completely agree with, especially after spending significant time at WDW. I love the quick transitions from land to land at DL. I was unaware that the Rocket Rods ride was based on Test Track technology. I know Radiator Springs Racers is, IMHO, a home run that blows Test Track out of the water in every way.

SHAG has been an inspirational artist for ages, never saw an interview before now! My reactions: 1. He paid his way through school by being an artist and musician...waitaminnit... 😂 2. The friend who got Shag a gallery show before he ever painted a single painting- that's a GREAT friend. 3. Disney had in-house artists mimicking his designs after he finished his gig with them? ... kinda icky. SHAG has a good attitude about it though. And the story of Disney Legal and the safety railing on the Jungle Tour boats is hilarious! 4. The Shag House sounds incredible... I'm imagining Frank Lloyd Wright but with color and alcohol. 5. Art school advice: "Don't tell a story in your art- that's illustration, not fine art!" What a face palm! Fantastic, fun interview! Loving this channel!
