What is bass 'growl' and how does Flea get that growly grind?
Basic discussion on 1. amp, 2. bass, and 3. technique to get that growly grind that we love from Flea. Skip forward for some average sound samples.
Strings are d'addario 45s (balanced tension) - not fresh.
NB: note that when I say action at '3/64ths' I mean measured at 12th fret with bass flat on its back. If you measure from the side (playing position) this jumps to a touch higher due to the lesser weight of the string (5/64ths) - another often overlooked factor in communicating action. They key is low relief for that buzz!
UPDATE: Flea's tech (in latest premier guitar video - FEB 2017) himself stated he sets fleas action at about 3/64s and 4/64s at 12th fret. So my directions are about bang on correct

Hubert Sumlin or Peter Green tones? Out of phase weird 'two notch secret'
มุมมอง 6K11 ปีที่แล้ว
So here is the 'secret' of the out of phase tone - a la Hubert Sumlin, and probably many others - including Peter Green? Here is 'the Kid' who got me started on this thinking: th-cam.com/video/oWndWYmYk10/w-d-xo.html , and who received the info direct from Hubert. Otherwise, check this out for how to actually do the magnet change: th-cam.com/video/dG09HtFui6M/w-d-xo.html
Boss DS2 Japan vs DS2 Taiwan (MIJ vs MIT)
มุมมอง 7K12 ปีที่แล้ว
Did this because...well, why not? There's no other info out there! Strat into a fender tube amp 2 DS2 friends... My final verdict is that the MIJ has more low-end, is grainer (less smooth sounding) a touch more sustain, and less 'scooped-out' mids. On that, I vote MIJ - but that is totally a personal preference.
Ibanez WH10 V2 wah - possible mods and tweaks, quick demo
มุมมอง 15K12 ปีที่แล้ว
A run through of what can be done to improve a WH10V2 Ibanez wah. There is a demo at the back - skip to 9:17 if you don't want the blah blah blah. The guy that did the volume pot mod is Owen, at Owen Electronics; www.owenelectronics.co.uk. A great guy to deal with, and he does whatever you crazy brain might desire to your gear. Mods I've done are: true bypass [www.tdpri.com/forum/attachments/st...
Vintage v300mh (mahogany) acoustic review
มุมมอง 23K12 ปีที่แล้ว
I forgot to mention in the video that I tried a bunch of similarly priced guitars and this was the best for me by far. I tried some of the new Hohner essential folk series too - they were as good, but a bit pricier...
Joyo Ultimate Octave demo - with easy cap mods - 'blue on black' tone of Kenny Wayne?
มุมมอง 13K13 ปีที่แล้ว
This is quick and dirty demo - so sorry for 1. poor sound of camera-phone, and 2. sloppy playing and timing. However, i just wanted to demo the wonderful octave effect this puppy brings. Note that it is key to have single coils on neck pup to get the full effect of the octave-up. The mod is really easy - spinning two capacitors (c9 and c15) on the board. It took me 20 minutes. You can find the ...
Danelectro Cool Cat Vibe w/ delay and vol fixed!

I modded this myself in an afternoon using the directions from the diystomboxes site I mention in the vid. This pedal is great value - especially when you've done these relatively easy mods!
Is the buddy some kind Of plastic ???
People rim Flea, pretty sure the king of growl was Jean-Jacques Burnel .. What an old codger I am....🤠
Simply put a buffer in front of your wah.. It's okay. th-cam.com/video/A-II-1jJoXM/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=MSMWorkshop
Flea played a Wal there. Mucho growl. Otherwise use a jazz , strings low low to the fretts and pluck hardd.
You could dremmel the top of the switch for a mm or two, maybe? Tight fit for shure!
Try this. Practice like a motherfunker. PLAY like one. THEN tell us how & why
Está idéntico!
Amigo..mmmm....por favor mejora tu sonido....y mejora la afinación......🙈🙈...la AS.103...es un gran instrumento....es una grannn guitarra. .. 👍👍
I am skeptical of this for sure, I saw a video years ago where I heard Flea playing a bass acoustically before a gig and there was no fret buzz. I think the growl sound comes from the playing style, the bass itself and the GK "Hitting The Rails" Amps Growl. Is there any evidence that he sets his action that low?
Ok, found this video th-cam.com/video/jDlILvy33C8/w-d-xo.html I stand corrected

Nice video. I unfortunately realised some slightly uneven frets on some areas of my MM Stingray, but regardless you get pretty darn close to his tone with this low-action. One thing worth mentioning is if you're aiming to get his tone while playing "direct" into the DAW or D.I., you'll probably hear more buzz than notes. Amp-Cab (or a Sim) is an absolute must to nail the whole equation. Cheers!
I did not get anything useful from this video
what strings are you using?
Does pickup height matter for this?
What is this peculiar "Gate" in the background? A fireplace?
I've got the Voodoo Octave, and this is the FIRST time that I've EVER been ABLE to hear the upper octave! When I got it, I thought maybe mine was defective, but I quickly learned it wasn't, they just sound like that... When I engage the "Octave" I noticed some increased high EQ, and possibly some OVERTONES, but definitely NOT an octave up ACTUAL TONE...
would you show me how to wiring the volume pot ?Please🙏🏼
Fleas Tick- insects everywhere
Wasted time. Fuck you.
Thanks for this interesting demo, I flipped the magnets on my P90 LP and really like the sound. Very clean and cuts through a mix well. While I don't know if it was intentionally done by early blues players you can see why they liked it. Gives the guitar a lot of punch to cut through a mix with a heavy bass and drum track. I think people don't like it because they are playing at home and it sounds a bit weedy but with a band and a cranked amp it is great!
not really fair playing a stingray style bass. they pretty much only growl
The answer is he plays hard, that's it.
You're fucking trash, just rubbish
Thanks mate. Having same bass as you I just flow with the growly sound of this bass. Your video just ended my everlasting distortion tune ups to find the sound. I just lowered the action 😎
Thank you. "Growl" is written all over in the bass reviews but I never understood what it meant. now I understand and for me it's just fret buzz :-) Don't take it bad, it's just not my liking and for now on I won't pay attetion to the "growl" factor in a bass review ;-) the same for "slap" : I don't care if a bass is bad for slap :-)
I shit you not- this dude doesn't play a single note during this fucking video. oh wait @9:00
finnaly someone puts numbers on what on whT ridicously low bass action means...thanks !
Play the bass man. Too much talking and doesn’t show how it sounds
Possibly the best guitar I have owned - including a Martin SP00016GT and a Gibson. Outstanding value for money. (Be sure to get the MH version. The spruce top was not as good.)
I didn't hear it, suggest tone off on bridge, full on neck, volume 5 on bridge, start 7 neck, go down till you hear it. Then roll tones to define it. My friend over here, kid A, he NAILED it 8 years ago on a video still up. Out of phase more important on hb's. P90's different mix. That setup on your OD pedal is stopping you, suggest turn it off, treble is ear bleed, cut it. Put on You'll Be Mine solo, go for that! Cheers
Mine is made in Taiwan and sounds like John it says Japan on it as well
And congratulations for the video!!! The best in TH-cam testing ds2 mit mij differences
Hi ti Kurt ds2 was MIT OR MIJ?
Igor Azevedo Madeira MIJ
How much is the Mij version
Also don’t listen to half these twats on here they are just keyboard warriors..
Great video mate! That tone is amaaazing loved it !
Playing a 7/8 song in 4/4, sinful.
thanks man! great explainations and great sound ;-)
yeah not the best for under a grand , but for under 200 its a really strong competitor
GK800RB is Flea's amp on BSSM. Later it was a 2001RB.
Nice tone mod. Playing was way too loud. Overpowered the backing track to the point it was almost annoying.
Thanks for the video, what is the name for that foam so I can find it to buy. Thanks
There was a fair old buzz when you plucked the top E string fairly hard at around 3:44, I think even a higher action may have buzzed too Though! , Nice picking by the way! :)
yeah tbh i think that was a buzz due to a mistake but i found whacking on some flat wound strings to be great way to reduce treble
Too much chit chat and not enough demonstration - more playing please...
Thx, you saved me 9 minutes of life... Clicking back now
This guy criticizes TH-cam demo's and he is here with his demo that he says will be more complete and detailed. He says.... "Because usually you find people just do it kind of like twitting about without really going into any of the detail"...Okay where are the details in this review/demo? Details like the neck shape, U shape, C shape, etc? Nut is made of what? Tuners/machine heads are what? What position is the pickup toggle switch in as he is playing....neck, bridge, both neck and bridge? Fretboard is made of what? Volume and separate tone controls for pickups? What kind of wood is used to make the guitar? This is not a guitar demo, not a review....It's a guitar opinion. The guy hardly even played the instrument. Total waste. I know nothing more about this guitar then I did before I watched this video. But... I do know the guy is from S. Africa.
Great review of the video. 5/5
you have a great sound going there
If anyone is interested: the successor Ibanez Wah (called Weeping Demon WD7) already has a volume pot besides the Q sweep pot. I'm not sure if you can achieve the same sounds though, never tested them side by side.
Very nice man. Love the tone of your Princeton Reverb. What OD pedal are you using here? Sounds quite natural.
I enjoyed your video (some people should simply channel their envious non-constructive crap elsewhere). Just in case you still own that SB14, here's a VERY EASY mod to have 2 more sounds out of it (real single coil ones). No noticeable extra hum and those also take growl to the next level. I did it on a Ray35 but electronics and pickup wiring are pretty much the same as in the SB14 (great bass BTW). th-cam.com/video/OkEQSGUJhL8/w-d-xo.html I also own USA Stingray 5ers and these SBMM are VERY close both in tone and playability.
Use a DI next time
